Recent survey among the Mech tribe living in the Duars of West Bengal, India, has recorded the uses of 20 different species of animals along with 11 species of plants in traditional medicines to cure different ailments. However, more efforts need to be exercised to explore and document the traditional ethnozoological knowledge accumulated by Mech and other tribes living in this region, so that, it can be put to the human welfare. In the Vedic text he is known by the names like Urugai, Urukram 'which means wide going and wide striding respectively'^. In the Rgvedic text he is also referred by the names like Varat who is none other than says N. P. Joshi^. In the Rgvedhe occupies a subordinate position and is mentioned only in six hymns'*. In the Rgvedic text he is solar deity associated with days and seasons'. References to the worship of early form of Vishnu in India are found in inscribed on the pillar at Vidisha. Bhagavata Purana
Bhagavata Purana The Bh āgavata Pur āṇa (Devanagari : भागवतपुराण ; also Śrīmad Bh āgavata Mah ā Pur āṇa, Śrīmad Bh āgavatam or Bh āgavata ) is one of Hinduism 's eighteen great Puranas (Mahapuranas , great histories).[1][2] Composed in Sanskrit and available in almost all Indian languages,[3] it promotes bhakti (devotion) to Krishna [4][5][6] integrating themes from the Advaita (monism) philosophy of Adi Shankara .[5][7][8] The Bhagavata Purana , like other puranas, discusses a wide range of topics including cosmology, genealogy, geography, mythology, legend, music, dance, yoga and culture.[5][9] As it begins, the forces of evil have won a war between the benevolent devas (deities) and evil asuras (demons) and now rule the universe. Truth re-emerges as Krishna, (called " Hari " and " Vasudeva " in the text) – first makes peace with the demons, understands them and then creatively defeats them, bringing back hope, justice, freedom and good – a cyclic theme that appears in many legends.[10] The Bhagavata Purana is a revered text in Vaishnavism , a Hindu tradition that reveres Vishnu.[11] The text presents a form of religion ( dharma ) that competes with that of the Vedas , wherein bhakti ultimately leads to self-knowledge, liberation ( moksha ) and bliss.[12] However the Bhagavata Purana asserts that the inner nature and outer form of Krishna is identical to the Vedas and that this is what rescues the world from the forces of evil.[13] An oft-quoted verse is used by some Krishna sects to assert that the text itself is Krishna in literary -

It belongs to the Koch subgrouping of the Bodo-Garo group of the Tibeto-Burman family and is spoken by a relatively small number of people in the western part of Meghalaya state in Northeast India (the total number of Koch in Meghalaya is about 25,000 people). Harigaya Koch is well understood by many Koch people of other groups and is used as a lingua franca at Koch social gatherings and in informal settings. -

There is reciprocal influence between Assamese and other languages. The Non-Aryan lingual families usually belong to Sino-Tibetan, Austric, Dravidian etc. Most of the languages belong to these families have extincted from the scene. Assamese turns to be the mother tongue of the tribes whose language was died as they adopt Assamese as their second language. The imposition of Assamese culture and language brings uncertainty to the Non -Aryan languages. Unawareness of the people regarding language also contributes to it. The objective of the paper is to study the dead languages and its reasons in the context of Assam. Key words: Language, death, Assamese. Objective The main objective of the paper is to study the dead languages of Assam and also to bring the factors into light. Methodology Analytical method and survey has been used in this study. Scope Attempt is made to present a description of the reasons of the dead languages. The scope of the study is confined only to the languages of Assam. 1.0 Linguistic Situation of the languages of Assam. Dead language brings not only uncertainty to the tribe or community, but also impacts its respective state. Man In India, 95 (2) : 153-183 © Serials Publications MAN AND ENVIRONMENT IN NORTHEAST INDIA: AN ECOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE Manjil Hazarika Northeast India may be considered to be an archetypal region for understanding man and his relationship to the environment in a systemic context. As development and change in this region is recorded at a slow pace, this region provides a solid case study for ethnographical analogy in order to understand ecological adaptation. Traditional rural cultures have a fundamentally different approach towards their biotope from that of modern affluent urban societies. Traditional societies value their natural surroundings as a life supporting resource. Moreover, in many cases, they develop and maintain certain indigenous rules and regulations for sustainable development in the form of customary laws, religious sentiment or social taboo. This paper is an attempt for understanding the settlement and subsistence behaviour of the indigenous populations of Northeast India based on the rich natural resources available for their livelihood with a strong bonding with their surrounding environment. Introduction Northeast India is spread across over 262,000 km2 and comprises the eight Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. This vast region is known for its diverse landscapes and ecologies as well as its ethnolinguistic and cultural diversity. These states are collectively referred to as ‘the Northeast’, ‘Northeast India’ or ‘the Northeastern Region’. Therefore, Northeast India is used here as a term to denote the region not merely as a geographical entity, but also as a complex cultural interaction sphere. Northeast India is an ethnic mosaic consisting of different tribal groups of various ethnic stocks, speaking diverse languages, maintaining their traditional customs and practices, having self-sufficient economies, and thus creating a multicultural constellation of tribes and peoples. -

To be sure, many of us are currently struggling with the issue of what it means to be a radical historian in the early twenty-first century, and this series is intended to provide some signposts for what we would judge to be radical history. It will o√er innovative ways of telling stories from multiple perspectives; comparative, transnational, and global histories that transcend con- ventional boundaries of region and nation; works that elaborate on the implications of the postcolonial move to ‘‘provincialize Eu- rope’’; studies of the public in and of the past, including those that consider the commodification of the past; histories that explore the intersection of identities such as gender, race, class and sexuality with an eye to their political implications and complications. ABSTRACT: Jalpaiguri district is mainly a tribal based area18.87% scheduled tribe people out of total number of scheduled tribes of West Bengal exist at present here. The tribal people of the district of Jalpaiguri can be divided broadly into two groups one of which is the early living resident group the Indo-Mongolians like- Mech, Rabha, Garo, Toto etc. and second is tribal settlers they were Santan, Oraon, Munda, Ho etc. Many authors have described the meches differently.They have their own social system and ethnic culture. But their life is changing with time.In my article I have tried to explore the present condition of mech women. Though some development are seen in their present status but the overall condition has not yet been sufficiently improved due to various reasons. I have studied two different type of villages and tried to find out the propor image of their present reality. KEYWORDS: Mech tribe, social custom, women, education, economy, problems. INTRODUCTION The tribal residents of the district of Jalpaiguri can be divided into two groups. One of which is the early living resident group they are Indo-Mongolians. They are known as son of the soil. These Indo- Mongoloid tribes, who came into settle in this fertile land. Most of them continue to live on even today. The Indo-Mongoloyed tribes are- Mech, Rabha, Garo, Toto etc.
