The genus is clearly divided into two groups, 4-merous and 5-merous species. Within each group the speciesare here arranged systematically.

In addition to the usual herbarium acronyms (Holmgren, Keuken and Schofield 1981), KP has been used for herb. Kings Park Botanic Garden, Perth. Where a herbarium holds more than one sheet of a collection, this has been indicated by the relevant number in brackets after the specimen's citation.

For some of the species described herein, not every specirnen seen by the author has been cited. In these cases,specimens with no collection data have not been cited but have been included in the figure for total number of specimensseen.

"calyx-tube" The term has been adopted in this paper and follows the terminology of Bentham (1867) since there appears to be little agreement amongst modern authors on the couect use of terms to describe this floral structure and its associated appendages.

Comments. Calothamnus fuberosushas no close affinity to any of the other 4-merous speciesand when the complete revision is published, it will probably be placed in a section on its own. This specieshas been confused with C. grlesii F. Muell. in herbarium collections. Calothamnus g esii has s-merous flowers, dark green slender Ieaves mostll' 1-1.2 mm wide, hairs at the base of the calyx-tube and alrnost cylindrical fruit 8-12 mm iong and c. 10 mm wide, with two of the lobes prominently thickened and persistent. Calothamnus tuberosus has 4 rnerous flowers, glaucous, succulent leaves 1.2-2mm wide, usually a glabrous calyx-tube and depressed globular, shortly 4 lobed fruit measuring 4-5 mm long,5 7 mm wide.

The most characteristic feature of this speciesis the presence oi fleshy, tuberous roots, first recorded by Hnatiuk (1979) who stated that such root structures had not been previously reccirded in Australian Myrtaceae. Hnatiuk found during transplanlation of seedlingsgrown in the glasshouse,that they had developed tubers. It appeared lrom anatomical examination of the tubers (Hnatiuk 19?9) that they were well-adapted to store water. In addition, Hnatiuk found that a dried seedling lost water rapidly from the roots whereas the leaves dried out slowly. I have shown (Hawkeswood 19?8, in prep.) that terete-leaved species of some genera in the Myrtaceae (e.g. Melaleuca, Eremaea, Beaufortia, Callistemon and. Calothamnus) have leaves with thick cuticles varying from Spm to 15p'm, epidermal cells with thick upper walls encrusted with cutin and often sunken stomates. All these features restrict water loss from leaves.

3a. subsp.formosus (Figures 6, 8, 18)

Erect, large s-hrub mostly to 2.5 m high (sometimes 4 m high). Leaves terete, (3)4-6(7) cm long, 0.8-1.2 mm wide, scabrous, shortly pilose, older leaves often glabrous.Calyx-tube narrowly campanulate,mostly glabrous;r,hachis dilated at base. Fruit 6.5-8 mm long, 5-6 mm wide. Derivation of name. Formosus, Latin, meaning "beautiful on account of form" referringto the largeshrub- to tree-likehabit of this species.

Habitat. Grows on red sandplainsin mallee-heathswith associatedspecies of Grevillea, Hakea, Banksia etc. (Figure 8). Flowers mostly between August and December.

Total number of specimensexarnined: 16. in Comments. Calothamnus aridus is not closely related to any other known species thu g"t.,r. It is the only specieswhich has petals covered in short, appressed,simple hairi (the remaining speiies have the petal margins ciliate only) The hairy calyx- tube and petals, and the vely narrow, erectly held leavesare probably adaptations to the arid environment which this speciesinhabits.

There is some variation in the size and shape of the fruits on the specimens lodged at PERTH and KP. Fruits vary from 5-6 mm diameter, depressedglobular' smooth capsules.to 8 mm diameter depressed globular capsules,slightly wider at the apex than at the base with smooth, rounded ribs.

Manv soecimens in the W.A. Herbariun (PERTH) have been confused with C pu c.hty"a, t.l,".us F. Muell. The latter species has larger floral parts' more densely bes"centcalyx,tube, scabrous leaves, and larger lruits (widest at the base) with prominently thickened calyx-lobesat the apex.

Comments.The flowers and fruits of Calothamnuskalbarriensis resemblethose of C' oldfietdii F. Muell., however it can be readily distinguished by the shorter, erectly held leavesmostly 1.5-2.5cm long (4-6 cm long and spreading in C. oldfieldii) Both specieshave fertile seedswith a single row of cilia on eachridge of the testa. The dis- tributions of the two speciesdo not overlap since C. oldfieldii is distributed from the Murchison River (27o45'S,114'15'E) to about 80km east of Geraldton (28'50'5, 115'30'E) while C. kalbarciensis is presently known from Kalbartl (27o42'5, 714'l2'E) north alongthe coastto TamalaHomestead (26" 42'5,113'43'E).

9. Calothamnus borealis T. J. Hawkeswood,sp. nov. (Figures 18, 19)

Frutex erectusad 1m altus. Folia linearia,teretia, pleraqueerecta, (5)7-10(13) cm longa, 1-1.5mm lata, breviter mucronata, pilosa. Flores fasciculati .vel breviter spicati. Calycis tubus pleraque 4-5 mm longus, pubescens;calycisJobi 2-3 mm longi. Petala circa 5 mm longa, roseaad ferruginea. Unguis staminalis 20-25mm longus, 1- 2 mm latus, glaber; filamentis marginalibus 20-25. Fructus cylindraceus,6.5-10 mm longus,?-10 mm Iatus,glaber. Semina 2-3 mm longa,pallido brunnea.
