THE LICKING VALLEY COURIER THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2009 PAGE ONE-B Licking Valley RECC says Thanks The late January massive ice storm caused the largest power outages in Kentucky history. Licking Valley RECC serves 18,000 members in eight counties and 16,000 were left in the dark, some for as long as 18 days. The magnitude of damage caused by freezing rain and sleet was simply unbelievable. Then when power was restored for almost everyone the wind storm came February 11th and many were again without power. We estimate nearly 180 broken poles, dozens of transformers and several hundred miles of power line were damaged or destroyed at the hands of Mother Nature. The repair costs will run into the millions. On behalf of the Licking Valley RECC Board of Directors, I want to thank those individuals and businesses that helped us during the power restoration process. I am humbled by the number of caring people who came to our aid. I am convinced that there is no greater earthly power than the brotherhood of people helping people.

PHENOMENAL BODIES, PHENOMENAL GIRLS: HOW YOUNG ADOLESCENT GIRLS EXPERIENCE BEING ENOUGH IN THEIR BODIES by HILARY ELIZABETH HUGHES (Under the Direction of Mark D. Vagle) ABSTRACT Drawing on philosophers (Ahmed, 2006; Fanon, 1986; Heidegger, 1927, 1962, 1992; Merleau-Ponty, 1962) and social science scholars (Dahlberg, Dahlberg, & Nystrom, 2008; Vagle, 2009, 2010, 2011; van Manen, 1990, 2000) for this phenomenological study, I asked what it was like for the seventh grade girls who participated with me in a year-long writing group to experience moments where they found themselves in bodily-not-enoughness: moments when someone or something was telling them they were not enough of something in their bodies. Using a multigenre magazine format for the dissertation, I describe how I learned—as an adult, a qualitative researcher, a middle grades teacher, and a teacher educator—from these seventh grade girls how to be-enough in my own body, by illustrating various moments when some of the girls seemed to talk-back-TO those societal messages telling them they were not pretty- enough, thin-enough, English-speaking-enough, white-enough, popular-enough, or smart-enough by embodying some kind of resistance-to those messages. I then suggest that if we as adults, qualitative researchers, middle grades educators, and teacher educators wish to try and understand better how female young adolescents of color experience living in their bodies, we should begin listening differently so that we can begin seeing/knowing/thinking the bodies of young adolescents,

Yetman _________________________________ Robert J. Antonio _________________________________ Joane Nagel _________________________________ Ben Chappell Date Approved: 30 August 2010 ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the emotional labor of Army wives as they volunteer in Army-mandated family-member support groups in each unit called Family Readiness Groups (FRGs). Since its inception, the Army has relied unofficially on soldiers’ wives’ contributions to the success of their husbands’ careers in a two-for-one career pattern—two workers for one paycheck. The Army made such expectations official when in 1988 it began to require volunteer labor to run each unit’s FRG. The Army tasks FRGs with connecting members to resources and relaying official information to soldiers’ family members. These support groups also serve a vital socializing function, though not all soldiers’ spouses participate in the information-dispensing and community-building groups.

Identities that are performed and mediated through a relationship between flmmaker and participant are examined with detailed reference to two decades of my own practice. A refexive, feminist approach engages my own flms - and the relationships that produced them - in analysis of the ethical potholes and emotional challenges in representing others on TV. The trigger for this research was the furiously angry reaction of the One Direction fandom to my representation of them in Crazy About One Direction (Channel 4, 2013). This offered an opportunity to investigate the potential for shame in documentary; a loud and clear case study of flmed participants using social media to contest their image on screen.

ABSTRACT How do current day military institutional practices structure the daily lives of military wives? To answer this question, I use the theories of greedy institutions, militarization, and the life-course perspective to investigate the effects of deployments, temporary duty assignments, and training exercises, which coalesce to create long-term family separations, as well long work hours and frequent family geographic moves. In total, I conducted in-depth interviews with 38 women and 2 men, used as supplemental data, who were married to active duty U.S. military service members at the time of their interview. I find the military’s organization of work creates certain work-family constraints that produces a sense of disorder within military family life. This disorder is constituted and sustained through military wives’ experiences of chronic uncertainty, related to when service members will be away for training, a deployment, or when they will be released from work at the end of the day.
