    Acta Poloniae Historica 121, 2020 PL ISSN 0001–6829 Maciej Falski http://orcid.org/0000-0002-5610-5608 Institute of Western and Southern Slavic Studies University of Warsaw SLOVENIAN ELITES IN TRIESTE AND THEIR ROLE IN THE FORMATION OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES Abstract This text discusses the formation of Slovenian local elites in Trieste in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A signifi cant part of the analysis presented here concerns the habitus of the elite and the attitudes expressed through the signifi cance they attached to being members of the elite. Drawing on the discourses presented in the Slovenian and Croatian press published in Trieste, as well as biographical sources, this article outlines the vision of society held by the political leaders of the local community. It emphasises how the elites gave expression to their habitus in the public sphere through a variety of institutional activities. I argue that the life of the Slovenian politician and social activist Ivan Nabergoj, a fi gure central to this text, constitutes an ideal-type committed biography. In conclusion, I address the relationship between the elites and the surrounding community, arguing that elites were representatives of the community while also determining the forms of group belonging by their shaping of mechanisms of consolidation. In this article, I also consider the particularities of the political conditions of Slove- nians living in the Slavic-Italian borderlands. Družinska zgodovina več generacij tržaških družin Vilfan in Jeanrenaud (od leta 1903 povezanih s poroko) že znotraj ene same ožje družine pokaže pestro etnično, versko in jezikovno povezovanje. Predstavljene slovenske meščanske družine Vilfan, Jugovic in Šav- nik v izobrazbenem, poklicnem in gospodarskem pogledu ustrezajo splošnim vzorcem meščanstva v svojem času ter predstavljajo socialno enakovreden del etnično mešanega tržaškega meščanstva. Na poznejšo nacionalno opredelitev posameznih članov obeh tržaških družin so poleg družinskih vezi vplivali poklic, izobrazba, delovno okolje in kraj bivanja. Prva svetovna vojna je pomemben rez v zgodovini Trsta in življenju predstavnikov obravnavanih družin, ki sta večinoma že do konca dvajsetih let 20. stoletja, dokončno pa po drugi svetovni vojni, zapustili Trst.

  • Introduction
    Introduction Early prerequisites for the national identity of the Slovaks Tracing the historical development of a national identity1 has in many cases proved to be a difficult task. The so-called dominant nations2 in their respective nation-states almost without exception have their own national historio- graphies, which regularly tend to see their ethnic ancestors more aware of their ethnicity than they actually were. Yet in principle a history of a nation must have a starting point just like any other historical phenomenon. The problem with the organic histories of nations, however, is that an ethnic group or a proto- nation did not know where they were going. They were ignorant of the mission assigned to them by their descendants, and since conscious attempts to strengthen or weaken a nation and its national identity are only later, rather modern, enterprises, greater importance must be given to the widely differing historical conditions of nations. Famines, epidemics, wars etc. have wiped out numerous nations, while others have survived them. But the core of the problem remains clear; a coincidence plays a vital part in the history of nations. Generally, it should be remembered that a national identity, like a personal identity, is at the same time both open to changes and resistant to them. Personal identities have a dynamic character3 i.e. they are never fixed and as such, they must also be time-related. Basically, this means that nations and ethnic groups are all the time in the middle of continuous and active historical processes, which are capable of affecting the development of the national identity of the members of the nations and ethnic groups.

Over the decade of intense research on empires, several other issues have been brought to the fore, including those that relate to memories of – and nostalgia for – empires. The latter seem particularly in tune with the Zeitgeist of Western societies. Nostalgic memories of defunct empires are fashionable not only in the social sciences. Empires are being manifoldly evoked in diverse cultural practices as well as in political arenas. National and regional identities are often being affirmed, and others denied, with reference to one-time imperial states. Meanwhile, memories have also become a substantial topic in anthropology, yet memories of empires are largely exempt from anthropologists’ attention.

    UDK 821.163.6.09-323 Levstik V.:27-23:27-243.32 FORTISSIMUS ROBORE: MARTIN KRPAN AS A CASE OF BIBLICAL RECEPTION David Movrin Abstract Martin Krpan z Vrha, written by Fran Levstik as a conscious experiment in prose-writing, has been interpreted variously during the last century and a half. The duel between a Slovenian peasant and a giant who comes to terrorise Vienna was in turn read by scholars as a political satire, the realisation of a literary and linguistic programme, a literary parody etc. Its motif was mostly interpreted with reference to Slavic folklore characters (Pegam and Lambergar, Prince Marko, f>~ter KJepecetc.}Jli~ analysi~ according_to tb_e ll1Qclt!l devised by Yladimir Propp, ho_wever, shows striking similarities with the Biblical story of David and Goliath (l Sm 17). The reception of this motif is marked by significant political overtones, already present in antiquity and then interest­ ingly developed in places as diverse as sixteenth-century Florence, Prague, and the Netherlands. As attested by the sources, Levstik used this motif several times; to a certain extent he even identi­ fied with its hero. Consciously designed as such by its influential author, Martin Krpan figures as the first important work of Slovenian prose­ writing and a milestone of literary narrative.

  • Ethnographic Legacies: Niko Kuret
    ETHNOGRAPHIC LEGACIES: NIKO KURET Ingrid Slavec Gradišnik Abstract: Niko Kuret was one of the most crucial personalities in Slovenian ethnology in the second half of the 20th century. Interested in a variety of subjects, he was nevertheless closest to ethnography even in the period before the Second World War. Although his ethnological research commenced in the late 1940s, he was not able to fully immerse himself in it until his full-time employment at the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology in 1954. Rather than Kuret’s infrequent explicit statements about theoretical re- search in ethnography, it was his research plan that represented the basis for founding the Commission for Slovenian Ethnography in 1947, his participation in discussions about future orientations in ethnology, his organizational work, and his methodological instructions that clearly indicate what ethnography/ ethnology meant to him and what purpose he saw in it. His research on social and spiritual life and culture, the methodology of which was essentially that of cultural history, expresses his principles and ideological orientation. In this respect, Kuret was an heir to ethnographic tradition. This can be seen from his methodological approach to folk culture as well as his opinion that its elements and values should be made familiar to the public. Yet as a scholar with diverse knowledge, well versed in scholarly production in Slovenia and abroad, and a participant in international scholarly discussions, Niko Kuret was able to follow, and accept, new trends in contemporary ethnology.
