WILDER KO'S SZPILKA The World Boxing Counci heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, succesfully defended his crown for the third time, defeating Polish, Artur Szpilka, by a chilling KO in the 9th round at the Barclays Center in New York. With a spectacular right hook landing crash, bang wallop on Spilka´s chin... It was all over, in true heavyweight one punch dynamite fashion! Up to that point, the fight had been competitive and entertaining with southpaw Szpilka going forward, and causing some problems. But Wilder's jab proved dominant and he intelligently used reach and range to land hard shots, which sapped the energy of his challenger as the fight wore on. RAJA DELIVERS A WAR! WBC Silver Female flyweight champion "Raging" Raja Amesheh retained her crown at the Conventions Center in Rosarito, BC, with a concvincing and non stop attack against lanky challenger Eileen Olszewski. After a quiet uneventful first round, Raja started to attack, but with accuracy, not abandon. She cut down the distance as Eileen's left jab was accurate, but not powerful to keep her off. Raja, who didn't sit down on her stool in her corner between rounds was effective in landing hard rights to body and head and often forcing Eileen to fight at uncomfortably close range. Ahead after announced scores after four and seven rounds, Raja was pulling away. Eileen was sporting an increasing swollen lump under her left eye. From the eight round until the tenth and last round Raja visibly tired, but still had enough left in the tank, in spite of an increasing amount of clinches. Two Judges scored it 96-94. The other had it as 97-93. All for still Silver flyweight Champion "Raging" Raja. GARCIA WINS WBC CROWN Former super lightweight champion Danny Garcia, (32-0, 18 Kos), won the vacant WBC welterweight title with a unanimous decision over former four-division champion Robert Guerrero, (33-4-1, 18 KOs). All three judges scored the bout 116-112. Garcia, who came into the fight as a 10-1 favorite, looked anything but early on as Guerrero controlled the action with his jab and higher workrate despite occasional lead left hands from Garcia that landed clean on the advancing Guerrero. However, from about the fourth round on, Garcia’s accuracy became the story of the fight, as Guerrero continued to throw more punches but was not landing cleanly, while Garcia rocked Guerrero three or four times each round with left and right hooks or the occasional right uppercut. Guerrero closed strong in the final round as the two fighters went toe to toe over the last thirty seconds of the fight, but it was too little too late for Guerrero. This card was the inaugural broadcast of PBC on FOX, from Staples Center in Los Angeles. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said of the fight: "It was a tremendous fight for the WBC Championship. Now we have a champion and it's going to be a great year go come. Amir Khan is the mandatory contender, he is next for Danny Garcia and they must fight by June." Born and raised in Manchester, Fury weighed just 1lb at birth after being born three months premature. His father John named him after Mike Tyson. From Irish traveller heritage, the“Gypsy King” is undefeated in 28 professional fights, winning 27 with 19 knockouts, and drawing once. His most famous victory came in 2015, when he stunned longtime champion Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight titles. He was forced to vacate the belts because of issues with drugs, alcohol and mental health, and did not fight again for more than two years. Most thought he was done with boxing forever. Until an amazing comeback fight with Deontay Wilder in December 2018. It was an instant classic, ending in a split decision tie. Outside of the ring, Tyson Fury is a mental health ambassador. He donated his million dollar purse from the Deontay Wilder fight to the homeless. This book is dedicated to the cause of mental health awareness.

  • Fighters and Fathers: Managing Masculinity in Contemporary Boxing Cinema
Fighters and Fathers: Managing Masculinity in Contemporary Boxing Cinema JOSH SOPIARZ In Antoine Fuqua’s film Southpaw (2015), just as Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Billy Hope attempts suicide by crashing his luxury sedan into a tree in the front yard, his ten-year-old daughter, Leila, sends him a text message asking: “Daddy. Where are you?” (00:46:04). Her answer comes seconds later when, upon hearing a crash, she finds her father in a heap concussed and bleeding badly on the white marble floor of their home’s entryway. Upon waking, Billy’s first and only concern is Leila. Hospital workers, in an effort to calm him, tell Billy that Leila is safe “with child services” (00:48:08-00:48:10) This news does not comfort Billy. Instead, upon learning that Leila is in the state’s custody, the former light heavyweight champion of the world, with face bloodied and muscles rippling, makes his most concerted effort to get up and leave—presumably, to find his daughter. Before he can rise, however, a doctor administers a large dose of sedative and the heretofore unrestrainable Billy fades into unconsciousness as the scene ends. Leila’s simple question—“Daddy. Where are you?”—is central not only to Southpaw but is also relevant for most major boxing films of the 21st century.1 This includes Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby (2004), David O. Russell’s The Fighter (2010), Ryan Coogler’s Creed (2015), Jonathan Jakubowic’s Hands of Stone (2016), and Stephen Caple, Jr.’s Creed II (2018). These films establish fighter/trainer relationships as alternatives to otherwise biological or “traditional” father/son relationships.

You look back on his career, on the tough road he had to the title, on the honest way he fought. The man was probably the last of his kind. As others have noted, Hagler himself does not participate (maybe we will see an autobiography some day) but the book is well sourced and well written.
