Good effortBy ihaschThis is a good, solid biography of my favorite boxer of all time. Hagler is a fighter whose stature grows with time. You look back on his career, on the tough road he had to the title, on the honest way he fought. The man was probably the last of his kind. As others have noted, Hagler himself does not participate (maybe we will see an autobiography some day) but the book is well sourced and well written. I read it in a few hours. Marvelous Marvin Hagler is a sporting legend. Often called the greatest middleweight boxer of all time, he held the world title for 12 defenses, including bouts with Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran, which entered fistic folklore. From his wild early fights in the boxing wilderness of Brockton, Massachusetts, Brian and Damian Hughes trace the blazing trail of Hagler's career: the controversial defeats subsequently avenged, a riot-scarred title win in London, and his unification of the middleweight crown. Hagler became a huge favorite, taking on all comers while never taking a step back. And so to The Ring magazine's "greatest round of all time" against Hearns, his ferocious battle with Duran, and the still-controversial loss to his nemesis Leonard. Marvelous tells the story of Hagler's extraordinary life for the first time, separating truth from myth to get right to the heart of a complex and charismatic man.     Sociology of Sport Journal,1993.10, 119-134 O 1993 Human Kinetics Publishers, Inc. Outside the Frame: Newspaper Coverage of the Sugar Ray Leonard Wife Abuse Story Michael A. Messner William S. Solomon University of Southern California Rutgers University This article analyzes the print media's ideological framing of the 1991 story of boxer Sugar Ray Leonard's admission of having physically abused his wife and abused cocaine and alcohol. We examined all news stories and editorials on the Leonard story in two major daily newspapers and one national sports daily. We found that all three papers framed the story as a "drug story," while ignoring or marginalizing the "wife abuse" story. We argue that sports writers utilized an existing ideological "jocks-on-drugs" media package that framed this story as a moral drama of individual sin and public redemption. Finally, we describe and analyze the mechanisms through which the wife abuse story was ignored or marginalized. History Humans have fought each other with their fists since the dawn of time, and boxing as a sport has been around nearly as long. Boxing, where two people participate in hand-to-hand combat for sport, began at least several thousand years ago in the ancient Near East. A relief from Sumeria (present-day Iraq) from the third millennium BC shows two facing figures with fists striking each other’s jaws. This is the earliest known depiction of boxing. Similar reliefs and paintings have also been found from the third and second millennium onward elsewhere in the ancient Middle East and Egypt.

Swarmer The Swarmer also known as ‘the Crowder’ keeps momentum moving forward with a high rate of punches to close the range and wear an opponent down with pressure of a non-stop work rate. The Swarmer is extremely fit and well-conditioned to keep up this constant pressure tactic for the duration of the bout. Famous Swarmers: Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales, Nigel Benn, Micky Ward 2.     SPORTING LEGENDS: SUGAR RAY ROBINSON SPORT: BOXING COMPETITIVE ERA: 1940 - 1965 Walker Smith Jr. (May 3, 1921 - April 12, 1989), better known in the boxing world as Sugar Ray Robinson, was a boxer who was a native of Detroit, Michigan. Robinson is the holder of many boxing records, including the one for the most times being a champion in a division, when he won the world Middleweight division title 5 times. He also won the world Welterweight title once. Robinson is regarded by many boxing fans and critics as the best boxer of all time. His supporters argue that while Muhammad Ali did more for the sport on a social scale, Robinson had a better style. Ali has said without hesitation many times that he feels that Robinson is the greatest fighter of all time, Ali simply considers himself to be the greatest Heavyweight Champion. During the 1940s and 1950s, Robinson appeared several times on the cover of Ring Magazine, and he joined the Army for some time. Robinson made his debut in 1940, knocking out Joe Eschevarria in 2 rounds. He built a record of 40 wins and 0 losses before facing Jake LaMotta, in a 10 round bout. The bout, which was portrayed in the Hollywood movie Raging Bull (which was based on LaMotta's life), was the second of six fights between these opponents, and LaMotta dropped Robinson, eventually beating him by decision. Robinson had won their first bout and would go on to win the next four. Between his debut fight and the second LaMotta bout, Robinson had also beaten former world champions Sammy Angott, Fritzie Zivic and Marty Servo.
