At the age of 17 this Johannes Berghuys moved to Delft upon being appointed city carillonneur. His parents settled with him there. At the age of 32 Johannes Berghuys married Maria Otte from The Hague. That same year their daughter Alida was born and six years later they had their son Frederik. No details are known about the family life and professional training of Johannes Berghuys in his Zutphen periode. -

Ivan Fischer Interview: Budapest Festival Orchestra and His Revolutionary Way with Opera the Conductor Is Turning Opera on Its Head with His Bold and Joyous Attitude
MENU CLASSICAL Ivan Fischer interview: Budapest Festival Orchestra and his revolutionary way with opera The conductor is turning opera on its head with his bold and joyous attitude. And the crowds are loving it Bryan Appleyard ‘There is something about being close to each other’: from left, Yvonne Naef, Sylvia Schwartz, Eva Mei, Laura Polverelli, Ivan Fischer and the BFO in Falstaff JUDIT HORVATH The Sunday Times, November 4 2018, 12:01am Share Save t’s Verdi, an aria from The Sicilian Vespers. The orchestra is playing, the soprano is singing. Then, without warning, all I the players stand up and sing the chorus. The audience gasps. The next night, it’s Verdi’s opera Falsta, and this time the audience just keeps gasping. The characters intertwine and react with the orchestra. They argue with the conductor, who grins and tut-tuts and, when Falsta hits rock bottom, gives him a cloth and a cup of wine. All of which would be amazing enough. But there is also the MENU thrilling fact that Falsta was Verdi’s last opera, and I am watching it in the last building of Andrea Palladio, arguably the greatest and certainly the most influential architect who ever lived. This first Vicenza Opera Festival at the Teatro Olimpico consists of two performances of Falsta and a gala concert. The conductor Ivan Fischer created the shows and brought his Budapest Festival Orchestra, which he set up in 1983 as an annual-festival institution. It became a permanent orchestra in 1992, but he kept the word “festival” in the title. -

Once I discovered the instrument’s wealth of possibilities during my first lessons and my years at the conservatory, I quickly set myself a goal: I wanted to promote the harp as a solo instrument, wherever and however I could. I wanted to do this not only through the performance of well-known pieces, but also by encouraging contemporary composers to produce new harp compositions. For my first Channel Classics CD, I have chosen a combination of three 20th-century French masters. The Parisian firm of Érard, in particular, created technical innovations to the harp which considerably broadened the instrument’s (chromatic) capabilities; these innovations, followed by the first ‘minor’ masterpieces by Debussy and Ravel, soon made Paris the epicentre of a veritable harp explosion. More and more well-trained harpists appeared, and so did composers who became interested in the harp. Even though André Caplet did not compose much for the harp, the ‘Deux Divertissements’ are now an indispensable part of the repertoire. They are one of the harpist’s ‘musts’. And I cannot imagine why Jacques Ibert’s ‘Six Pièces’, those surprisingly colourful miniatures – are so rarely performed in their entirety. French-American Carlos Salzedo occupies a special place in the world of the harp. Famous both as a performer and teacher, he was immensely influential. -

Dear Customer, Glorious sunshine and summer temperatures prevail as this foreword is being written, but we suspect it will all be over by the time you are reading it! On the plus side, at least that means we might be able to tempt you into investing in a little more listening material before the outside weather arrives for real… We were pleasantly surprised by the number of new releases appearing late April and into May, as you may be able to tell by the slightly-longer-than-usual new release portion of this catalogue. Warner & Erato certainly have plenty to offer us, taking up a page and half of the ‘priorities’ with new recordings from Nigel Kennedy, Philippe Jaroussky, Emmanuel Pahud, David Aaron Carpenter and others, alongside some superbly compiled boxsets including a Massenet Opera Collection, performances from Joseph Keilberth (in the ICON series), and two interesting looking Debussy collections: ‘Centenary Discoveries’ and ‘His First Performers’. Rachel Podger revisits Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for Channel Classics (already garnering strong reviews), Hyperion offer us five new titles including Schubert from Marc-Andre Hamelin and Berlioz from Lawrence Power and Andrew Manze (see ‘Disc of the Month’ below), plus we have strong releases from Sandrine Piau (Alpha), the Belcea Quartet joined by Piotr Anderszewski (also Alpha), Magdalena Kozena (Supraphon), Osmo Vanska (BIS), Boris Giltberg (Naxos) and Paul McCreesh (Signum). -
