Barlett & Steele Archive Biographical Note: Journalists Donald L. Barlett (1936- ) and James B. Steele (1943- ) worked together at The Philadelphia Inquirer , (1971-1997), Time Magazine , (1997-2006), and as contributing editors at Vanity Fair (2006- ). They also have written eight books. Barlett and Steele pioneered the reporting methods now standard in their profession. In 1972, they used a computer to analyze more than 1,000 cases of violent crime in Philadelphia. “Crime and Injustice” was the largest computer-assisted project of its time and was widely replicated by other journalists for years afterward. Barlett and Steele won two Pulitzer Prizes and scores of other national journalism awards for their work at The Philadelphia Inquirer and two National Magazine Awards at Time Magazine . Scope and Content Note: The Barlett and Steele Archive (1971-2010) consists of materials created and collected by Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele in connection with their research for published and unpublished newspaper and magazine articles and books. It contains raw research on unfinished and unpublished projects, as well as leads on potential stories. The archive includes audiovisual materials, books, corporate and government reports, correspondence, Freedom of Information Act filings, interview notes and transcriptions, manuscripts, statistical analyses, tax returns, and numerous letters from readers expressing their views on a wide range of issues or suggesting future stories. The files relate to a variety of topics including criminal justice, energy, federal housing programs, foreign aid, Howard Hughes, Indian gaming, litigation, nuclear waste, Olympics, Nelson A. Rockefeller, and taxes. The collection tracks decades of public policy-making on these issues and includes court records, government audits, property records, and legislative histories that detail the manipulation of public policy by special interests. Series Descriptions and Preliminary Inventory Please be advised that this collection is only minimally processed so the inventory does not list every folder. Series 1: Federal Housing Administration Scandal This series consists of the materials collected for Barlett & Steele’s 1971 exposé in The Philadelphia Inquirer of how real estate speculators in Philadelphia and other cities misused a program intended to promote low income home ownership. Their investigation discovered that poor families were being charged exorbitant prices for houses that often fell apart weeks later. Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. (September 24, 1905 – April 5, 1976) was, in his time, an aviator, engineer, industrialist, film producer and director, a palgrave, a playboy, an eccentric, and one of the wealthiest people in the world. He is famous for setting multiple, world air-speed records, building the Hughes H-1 Racer and H-4 Hercules airplanes, producing the movies Hell's Angels and The Outlaw, owning and expanding TWA, his enormous intellect[1], and for his debilitating eccentric behavior in later life. Early years Hughes was born in Houston, Texas, on 24 September or 24 December 1905. Hughes claimed his birthday was Christmas Eve, although some biographers debate his exact birth date, (according to NNDB.com, it was most likely "the more mundane date of September 24"[2] ). His parents were Allene Stone Gano Hughes (a descendant of Catherine of Valois, Dowager Queen of England, by second husband Owen Tudor) [3][4] and Howard R. Hughes, Sr., who patented the tri-cone roller bit, which 1 allowed rotary drilling for oil in previously inaccessible places. Howard R. Hughes, Sr. founded Hughes Tool Company in 1909 to commercialize this invention. Hughes grew up under the strong influence of his mother, who was obsessed with protecting her son from all germs and diseases.

    JETS 43/4 (December 2000) 619–636 THE BIBLE CODE: “TEACHING THEM [WRONG] THINGS” RICHARD A. TAYLOR* I. INTRODUCTION Michael Drosnin, author of the 1997 New York Times best-selling book entitled The Bible Code, tells of ˘ying to Israel on 1 September 1994 in order to convey to then Israeli prime minister Rabin an urgent and sober warning. Drosnin had learned that the only time the name Yitzhak Rabin appeared in the Bible code it intersected the words “assassin that will assassinate.” Drosnin had therefore concluded that the life of the Prime Minister was in grave danger. But he also thought that if immediate action were taken this imminent catastrophe could perhaps be avoided. When he arrived in Israel, Drosnin met with Israeli poet Chaim Guri, a close friend of the prime min- ister, who in turn conveyed Drosnin’s message to Rabin. Drosnin urged that the Bible code message concerning Rabin be taken seriously, especially in light of the fact that the same Bible code had also accurately announced the prior assassinations of Anwar Sadat, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, and Mahatma Gandi. Drosnin’s mission, however, did not meet with success. Less than a year later, on 4 November 1995, Yitzhak Rabin was unexpectedly killed by a Jewish assassin.1 * Richard A.     Bible Code, Revisited Jason Wilson

    Article Bible Code, Revisited Jason Wilson After the Bible Code and its technical term, Equidistant Letter Sequences, was defi ned, Jason Wilson its intriguing story spread in peer-reviewed publications and rose among Jewish and Christian intellectuals. A review of the evidence for and against the Bible Code follows, including the Statistical Science journal debate, code in nonbiblical texts, code in randomly permuted texts, “mega-codes,” code-testing protocol, the multiple testing problem, ambiguities in the Hebrew language and text, and word frequencies. It is concluded that while the faith of Bible Code proponents is admirable, the concept does not hold up to scrutiny.     The Bible Code “For three thousand years a code in the Bible has remained hidden. Now it has been unlocked by computer – and it may reveal our future. The events that happened thousands of years after the Bible was written – World War II, the Moon landing, Watergate, both Kennedy assassinations, the election of Bill Clinton, the Oklahoma City bombing – all were foretold in the code.” In those words we are introduced to The Bible Code, a 265 page book published in 1998 by Michael Drosnin, a former reporter at the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. Using a computer, it proposes to lay out the Hebrew text of the Bible in block form similar to a cross-word puzzle and then to find messages revealed in “equidistant letter sequences.” The coded messages are laid out horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, often crossing one another. A long-time partner in this ministry, Bob Gleaves, of Brentwood, Tennessee, bought a copy for me and asked for my opinion of it. Then he suggested that I express my thoughts in Freedom’s Ring. The “evidences” presented are based on computers, the Hebrew language, and mathematical sequences of Hebrew characters in which I claim no expertise at all. So I can neither prove nor disprove the startling claims Drosnin makes. Favorable review of The Bible Code has been given by numerous well-known newspapers and journals. Noted mathematicians have added their verification. All this tends to be intimidating evidence of the credibility of the material. If the claims made by Drosnin are true, they only affirm the truth of the Scriptures being God’s message.
