Title: Suddenly, Last Summer John Cukrowicz Montgomery Clifta young psycho-surgeon from a New Orleans, Louisiana mental hospital that is desperately in need of funds, into lobotomizing her niece, Catherine Holly Dame . Catherine has been babbling obscenely about Sebastian's mysterious death that she while on vacation together in Spain the Suddenly Last Summer summer. Written by alfiehitchie. New Orleans, Doctor Cukrowicz is summoned to the home of Violet Venable, he is encouraged to go by his father who sees a ripe opportunity to get a significant amount of funding directly out of the rich widow. Venable tells Cukrowicz of her niece, Catherine, who has been diagnosed as having a mental disease that causes her to have outbursts etc. She wants Cukrowicz to carry out a lobotomy on Kathryn without question. However Cukrowicz meets with Catherine and finds her Suddenly Last Summer behind memories that she won't let herself remember. He tries to draw out whatever her stepmother is so desperate to have cut out. I watched this with no prior knowledge of what it was about or any of the hidden themes that are brought out after viewing. The plot starts simply and I wasn't sure where it was going. Then Mrs Venable is introduced and we learn of her desire to have Catherine lobotomised. This is followed by the question what Suddenly Last Summer to Sebastion Venable's son that has sent Catherine mad and sent Mrs Venable to Suddenly Last Summer point where she wants Suddenly Last Summer cut it out of her memory. This question looms large over the film and is very effective in driving the plot forward. The clues are given all along to what a messed up situation the whole thing is and the final 15 minutes are powerful despite some weaknesses. The Suddenly Last Summer has talked up the romance part of the film between Catherine and Dr Cukrowicz, I assume to try and cover the unpleasant business and make it easier on a fifties audience, this takes away a little bit but didn't distract me too much from the central tale. Hepburn is magnificent in her role and her opening scene does much to captivate you for the rest of the movie. Taylor is good but at times feels too polished to be in her character's predicament. Clift was too stale for me and didn't really stand out when placed beside these two actresses going hell for leather for their roles. Overall I enjoyed this film. The tension of the central questions is built on well with Suddenly Last Summer and dark secrets hinted at constantly. The underlying themes add to it but you don't lose anything if you don't see them and the dark secret is powerful and meaningful even if it must do well by the censors of the day. What poses a unique difficulty to critics of Suddenly Last Summer is the absence of its protagonist. Man devours man in a metaphorical sense. Suddenly, Last Summer is a Southern Gothic mystery film based on the play of the same name by Tennessee Williams. The film was directed by Joseph L. The musical score was composed by Buxton Orrusing themes by Malcolm Arnold. The plot centers on a young woman who, at the insistence of her wealthy aunt, is being evaluated by a psychiatric doctor to receive a lobotomy after witnessing the death of her cousin Sebastian Venable while travelling with him in Spain the previous summer. New Orleans, Catherine Holly Elizabeth Taylor is a young woman institutionalized for a severe emotional disturbance that occurred when her cousin, Sebastian Venable, died under questionable circumstances while they were on summer holiday in Europe. The late Sebastian's wealthy mother, Violet Venable Katharine Hepburnmakes every effort to deny and suppress the potentially sordid truth about her son and his Suddenly Last Summer. Toward that end, she attempts to bribe the state hospital's administrator, Dr. Lawrence J. Hockstader Albert Dekkerby offering to finance a new wing for the underfunded facility if he will coerce his brilliant young surgeon, Dr. John Cukrowicz Montgomery Cliftinto lobotomizing her niece, thereby removing any chance that the events surrounding her son's death might be revealed by Catherine's "obscene babbling. Venable meets with Dr. Cukrowicz in the primordial garden "like the dawn of creation" at her estate to discuss her niece's case, and their conversation eventually turns to Sebastian. Venable describes him as a poet whose art was Suddenly Last Summer sole occupation — even though he only wrote a single poem each year during the summer months Suddenly Last Summer never Suddenly Last Summer his work — and recounts her own previous vacations with him. Cukrowicz agrees to visit Catherine and begin his evaluation. Suddenly Last Summer has been confined to a private women's mental institution since returning from Europe several months earlier. When Cukrowicz interviews her, she struggles to recall the specific events that led to Sebastian's death and her subsequent breakdown, but Suddenly Last Summer a sincere desire Suddenly Last Summer do so. Beginning to doubt that she has lost her mind, Cukrowicz decides to move Catherine into the state hospital for continued observation. Catherine's mother, Grace Mercedes McCambridgeand brother, George Gary Raymondpay her a visit there and reveal that Sebastian has left them a considerable sum of money. Unfortunately, Mrs. Venable will not give them the inheritance unless they sign papers to commit Catherine to the institution and allow a lobotomy to be performed. Alarmed by this prospect, Catherine tries to escape. She accidentally wanders onto a catwalk suspended over the men's recreational area. With the door at the other end of the catwalk locked, she is forced to fight her way back past the men who are trying to climb up onto the catwalk and grope her, and returns to her room in defeat. Later, Mrs. Venable drops by to check on the status of Cukrowicz's evaluation. The doctor persuades her to meet Catherine face to face. In the ensuing confrontation, Catherine tries to get her aunt to reveal the true nature of her relationship with Sebastian and the reason why she was left behind and Catherine chosen to take her place as his traveling companion, vaguely hinting that Sebastian used them as "bait" and that they "procured for him. Venable responds to these allegations by fainting. Using this opportunity to slip away, Catherine finds another catwalk that runs above a room filled with women. She climbs the railing and leans out precipitously, considering the jump, but before she can release her hold, an orderly David Cameroncomes up behind her, drags her back to her room, and sedates her. In a last-ditch effort Suddenly Last Summer help Catherine, Cukrowicz brings her to the Venable estate Suddenly Last Summer he administers a truth serum that will allow her to overcome any resistance to remembering what happened that summer. Hockstader, and Nurse Benson Patricia Marmontall of whom have gathered on the patio in the jungle-like garden, Cukrowicz begins questioning Catherine. She recalls how she and Sebastian spent their days on the beach in the Spanish town of Cabeza de Lobo. On one occasion, he drags her reluctantly into the water, causing the fabric of her white bathing suit to become transparent. A group of young men who had been watching her from the neighboring public beach start to approach but are intercepted by Sebastian. Catherine comes to realize that he is using her to attract these boys in order to proposition them for sex. Because the boys are desperate for money, Sebastian is successful in his efforts; however, he gradually becomes "fed up with the dark ones", and being "famished for blonds," makes plans to depart for Northern Europe. One scorching white-hot day, Sebastian and Catherine are beset by a team of boys begging for money. When Sebastian rejects them, they pursue him through the streets of the town. Sebastian attempts to flee, but the boys swarm around him at every turn. He finally Suddenly Last Summer cornered among the ruins of a Suddenly Last Summer on a hilltop. In the meantime, Catherine frantically has been trying to catch up with Sebastian, but she reaches him only to see him overwhelmed by the boys. To Suddenly Last Summer horror and revulsion, they begin to tear him apart and eat his flesh. She Suddenly Last Summer for help to no avail. At this point in telling her astonishing account of Sebastian's demise, Catherine has collapsed upon the ground, sobbing. Her mind undone by the shock of hearing Suddenly Last Summer tale, Mrs. Venable closes Sebastian's last book of poems, the pages of which are blank, then slowly rises from her seat and takes Cukrowicz's arm. Calling him Sebastian, she tells him not to be out in the sun for too long and that they should Suddenly Last Summer inside the boat and inform the captain that they want to leave. Venable is led away, and Cukrowicz returns to check on Catherine, who has recovered. They both walk into the house together. Suddenly, Last Summer is based on a one-act play by Tennessee Williams that originally was paired Suddenly Last Summer Something Unspoken as part of the off-Broadway double-bill titled Garden District. Following A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin RoofSuddenly, Last Summer was the third of Williams' plays to be adapted for the screen that dealt with the subject of homosexualityalthough it was far more explicit in its treatment than either of the previous films were allowed to be under the Motion Picture Production Code. Williams asserted that no actor could portray Sebastian convincingly and that his absence from the screen only made his presence more strongly felt. Elizabeth Taylor selected Suddenly, Last Summer as her first project after recently ending her contractual commitment to Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer. At the time, she was the biggest box office draw in Hollywood, and she used this power to insist that Montgomery Clift be hired for the film. When he was unable to find a Suddenly Last Summer willing to attest to his insurabilityproducer Sam Spiegel approved his casting and went ahead with filming anyway. Clift found the long scenes exhausting and had to have his longest scene shot in multiple takes, one or two lines Suddenly Last Summer a time. His shaky performance led director Joseph Suddenly Last Summer to ask Spiegel several times to replace the actor. Indeed, Hepburn found Mankiewicz's conduct so unforgivable that as soon as he called the final "cut" of the film, she asked him to confirm that her services were no longer required, and when he did, she spat in his face. Problems beset the film's musical score as well. Malcolm Arnold originally was retained to work on it, but he apparently found certain aspects of the story so disturbing that he withdrew from the project after composing only the main themes. Buxton Orr completed the score. Taylor, following her final monologue wherein she describes Sebastian's murder, burst into tears and could not be consoled. Using techniques, she had tapped into Suddenly Last Summer grief over the death of her third husband Mike Todd. Contemporary reviews were mixed. Although Hepburn and Taylor received some positive notices for their performances, the film was judged as having suffered for being stretched to feature length and having its content toned down from that of the play. Elizabeth Taylor is rightly roiled as the Suddenly Last Summer, but her wallow in agony at the climax is sheer histrionic showing off. Joseph L. Mankiewicz's direction is strained and sluggish, as is, indeed, the whole conceit of the drama. It should have been left to the off-Broadway stage. Variety called it "possibly the most bizarre film ever made by any major American company," adding. Perhaps the reason is that what was a long one-act play has been expanded in the screenplay, by Williams and Gore Vidal, to a longish motion picture. Nothing Suddenly Last Summer been Suddenly Last Summer is an improvement on the original; the added scenes are merely diversionary. Harrison's Reports wrote "Aside from the fact that the film will draw curiosity-seekers in droves, the film is a mystery—and the mystery is why Sam Spiegel, a brilliant producer, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, an excellent director, and Columbia, a responsible distributor, even bothered with it in the first place. Richard L. Coe of The Washington Post delivered a mixed review, calling the film "undeniably powerful" and Hepburn "utterly brilliant," but found that. It can be said that the moral is utterly valid, that those we buy and use utterly destroy us, for Mrs. Venable and Suddenly Last Summer wealth are as destroyed as her son and his selfishness. But by framing the statement in so purposely shocking Suddenly Last Summer story and then by not being Suddenly Last Summer honest about even that, the film too often becomes purposeless, evasive. The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote that by extending the stage version to feature film length, "the story now sags sufficiently for one to question its credentials, and to realise that its attempt to illuminate the darker corners of the mind is actually nothing more than a slightly infantile fantasy of guilt and masochism. John L. Scott of the Los Angeles Times was more positive, calling the film "an absorbing, in part, shocking Suddenly Last Summer picture," in which Hepburn and Taylor "pull out all the histrionic stops, resulting in performances that will undoubtedly bring plenty of votes come Oscar- nominating time. Several people involved with Suddenly, Last Summer later went on to Suddenly Last Summer the film. Despite being credited for the screenplay, Tennessee Williams denied having any part in writing it. He thought Elizabeth Taylor was miscast as Catherine, telling Life in "It stretched my credulity to believe such a 'hip' doll as our Liz wouldn't know at once in the film that she Suddenly Last Summer 'being used for something evil. Gore Vidal criticized the ending which had been altered by director Joseph Mankiewicz, adding "We were also not helped by From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theatrical release poster.
