Katharine Hepburn: Icon, Iconoclast Presented with February 14 – March 30 Celebrating Katharine Hepburn, an icon and mold-breaker in the world of film and style, we present eleven of the legend’s most beloved titles with the Durham Museum. In a career that contained many chapters, Hepburn was known for playing women who spoke up, didn’t follow orders, and – shock- ingly – wore pants! One of her first roles was as willful Jo in LITTLE WOMEN. Hepburn later evolved into one of the biggest stars of the screwball comedy era. Her turn as a bold, take-charge heiress in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY exem- plified these roles, and a free Valentine’s Day screening of the film, sponsored by Borsheims, kicks off the series. Little Women 1933 After meeting the love of her life, Spencer Tracy, on the set of WOMAN OF The Philadelphia Story 1940 THE YEAR, the two co-starred in nine films – one of cinema’s most endear- Stage Door 1937 ing collaborations. Starting around the time of John Huston’s 1951 classic Bringing Up Baby 1938 THE AFRICAN QUEEN – cited by lauded director and recent guest of Films Streams David O. Russell as one of his favorite movies of all time – Hepburn Holiday 1938 increasingly took on more challenging dramatic roles. A tremendous presence Woman of the Year 1942 onscreen and off, Hepburn’s career spanned six decades and garnered four Adam’s Rib 1949 Best Actress Academy Awards. The African Queen 1951 The series coincides with the costume exhibit “Katharine Hepburn: Suddenly, Last Summer 1959 Dressed for Stage and Screen” on display at the Durham Museum from Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner 1967 February 7 through April 26. It is a true delight to showcase the work of an indelible artist, made even more special by the opportunity to see some of the The Lion in Winter 1968 revolutionary styles that Hepburn graced over her career. All screenings will occur at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater. Durham See reverse side for more Museum members may enjoy a discounted admission price of $7 per screening. information and dates.
