The three speakers spoke on different aspects of the difficult task of putting a monetary or tangible value on the value or impact of library services. Andrew Green spoke on the varying interpretations of the words ‘value’ and ‘impact’ and on how valuable energy can be used analysing library impact which might be better used in devising better and more imaginative ways to serve users. The problems of using ‘contingent valua- tion’ as a method were explored, while Ruth Flanagan in her speech spoke on how reluctant funders sometimes require value to be demonstrated in ‘sound-bite’ terms for consumption by the media. The value of libraries to users Ruth pointed out is almost impossible to quantify in hard data terms, but the social capital produced by public libraries is hard to deny.
