Fifty-One Tales Lord Dunsany Published: 1915 Categorie(s): Fiction, Fantasy, Short Stories Source: http://www.gutenberg.org 1 About Lord Dunsany: Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (24 July 1878 – 25 October 1957) was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work, mostly in fantasy, published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays. Born to one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, Dunsany lived much of his life at perhaps Ireland's longest-in- habited home, Dunsany Castle near Tara, worked with W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, received an honourary doctorate from Trinity College, was chess and pistol-shooting champion of Ire- land, and travelled and hunted extensively. He died in Dublin after an attack of appendicitis. Making Their Mark 17 A CELEBRATION OF GREAT WOMEN ARTISTS Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats, in a 1901 portrait by Photograph of Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats (left) and Elizabeth Corbet "Lolly" Yeats (right). Elizabeth Corbet "Lolly" Yeats, in an 1887 Jack Butler Yeats. National Gallery of Ireland. portrait by Jack Butler Yeats. Sisters Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats (1866-1949, above, left) and Elizabeth Corbet "Lolly" Yeats (1868-1940, above, right) were pivotal figures in the advancement of the Arts and Crafts style in Ireland. Founded in England by the British designer William Morris, the Arts and Crafts Movement advocated traditional, handcrafted objects as a rebellion against soulless factory-made furnishings. The Yeats sisters were from a preeminent Irish family--their father John and brother Jack were noted painters, and their other brother was the renowned poet William Butler Yeats. Born in Enniscrone, County Sligo, Ireland, Lily Yeats was a frequent visitor to William Morris when her family moved to London in the 1870s; she would learn embroidery from his daughter, May Morris. Younger sister Lolly Yeats, also in the Morris circle, was more interested in painting and printing; by the end of the century she had written and illustrated four instructional books on sketching directly with a brush. Upon returning to Ireland, both sisters would co-found the Dun Emer Guild, a Arts and Crafts group in Dublin managed and staffed entirely by women, with the textile designer Evelyn Gleeson (1855-1944). Guilds, as opposed to factories, were a return to the Medieval and Renaissance guilds that once served as the primary centers of art production.

  • Lord Dunsany -- Tales of Wonder
Lord Dunsany Tales of Wonder TALES OF WONDER by Lord Dunsany Preface Ebrington Barracks Aug. 16th 1916. I do not know where I may be when this preface is read. As I write it in August 1916, I am at Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry, recovering from a slight wound. But it does not greatly matter where I am; my dreams are here before you amongst the following pages; and writing in a day when life is cheap, dreams seem to me all the dearer, the only things that survive. Just now the civilization of Europe seems almost to have ceased, and nothing seems to grow in her torn fields but death, yet this is only for a while and dreams will come back again and bloom as of old, all the more radiantly for this terrible ploughing, as the flowers will bloom again where the trenches are and the primroses shelter in shell-holes for many seasons, when weeping Liberty has come home to Flanders. To some of you in America this may seem an unnecessary and wasteful quarrel, as other people's quarrels often are; but it comes to this that though we are all killed there will be songs again, but if we were to submit and so survive there could be neither songs nor dreams, nor any joyous free things any more. And do not regret the lives that are wasted amongst us, or the work that the dead would have done, for war is no accident that man's care could have averted, but is as natural, though not as regular, as the tides; as well regret the things that the tide has washed away, which destroys and cleanses and crumbles, and spares the minutest shells.

Midwest ACIS Comes to Milwaukee The annual Midwest Regional meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS) was held on the UWM campus from Thursday, October 14, through Saturday, October 16. ACIS is an interdisciplinary scholarly organization founded in 1960. The conference was organized by José Lanters, Nancy Walczyk, and John Gleeson, under the auspices of the Center for Celtic Studies. On Thursday evening, the meeting kicked off in great style with a reception for the delegates in County Clare Irish Inn, with Irish music by Cé. In the course of the evening, James Liddy’s autobiography, The Doctor’s House (Salmon Press, 2004), fresh off the plane from Ireland, was launched, read from, toasted, sold, and sanctioned by the presence of emeritus archbishop Rembert Weakland, who had joined us for the occasion. Friday was a full day, with an exciting academic program of eight panels of four speakers each, on topics ranging from literature and history to music, art and politics. Professor Seamus Caulfield’s Frank Gleeson, Tom Kilroy, James Liddy, plenary lecture, “Neolithic Rocks to Riverdance,” accompanied by Jose Lanters, Josephine Craven, Joe slides and presented with verve and humor, gave his enthusiastic Dowling and Eamonn O’Neill audience an insight into the many and varied aspects of the archaeological excavations at Céide Fields in Co. Mayo. A reception at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, hosted by Charles Sheehan, Irish Consulate of Chicago, concluded the day, and included even more delights, in the form of James Fraher’s photographic images of Ireland, and enchanting music by Melanie O’Reilly and Seán O Nualláin.

Nationalism, Motherhood, and Activism: The Life and Works of Beatrice Elvery, 1881-1920 Melissa S. Bowen A Thesis Submitted to the Department of History California State University Bakersfield In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History May 2015 Copyright By Melissa S. Bowen 2015 Acknowledgments I am incredibly grateful for the encouragement and support of Cal State Bakersfield’s History Department faculty, who as a group worked closely with me in preparing me for this fruitful endeavor. I am most grateful to my advisor, Cliona Murphy, whose positive enthusiasm, never- ending generosity, and infinite wisdom on Irish History made this project worthwhile and enjoyable. I would not have been able to put as much primary research into this project as I did without the generous scholarship awarded to me by Cal State Bakersfield’s GRASP office, which allowed me to travel to Ireland and study Beatrice Elvery’s work first hand. I am also grateful to the scholars and professionals who helped me with my research such as Dr. Stephanie Rains, Dr. Nicola Gordon Bowe, and Rector John Tanner. Lastly, my research would not nearly have been as extensive if it were not for my hosts while in Ireland, Brian Murphy, Miriam O’Brien, and Angela Lawlor, who all welcomed me into their homes, filled me with delicious Irish food, and guided me throughout the country during my entire trip. Although he is considered a writer of the Irish Literary Renaissance and knew the main figures of the movement, Dunsany was a British subject who associated primarily with the British aristocracy. He attended Cheam and Eton, and received his military education at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. During his military career Dunsany was transferred to Gibraltar, where he developed a fascination for the Middle East that is reflected in many of his short stories. After participating in the Boer Wars in South Africa, during which he befriended Rudyard Kipling, Dunsany returned to his estate in County Meath, Ireland. Dunsany succeeded his father as the eighteenth baron in 1899. In 1904 he married Lady Beatrice Child-Villiers and began a period of great literary productivity, in which he produced numerous plays and short stories. Following service in the first World War, Dunsany became the Irish chess champion, a big game hunter, and a popular lecturer in Great Britain and the United States.
