IDR, Anul II, Nr. II (IV), Semestrul II, Bucureşti, 2007 269 Evaluating NATO In The Final Stages Of The Cold War: A Neoconservative Perspective Victor RIVALET There are two essential moments which defined and shaped the current layout of the global arena. The first of these is 1989–1991, when the Communist block collapsed and the Cold War ended; this concluded almost 50 years of ideological conflict and nuclear threats, and the USA emerged as the sole superpower left. The second, equally important, is September 11th 2001, when, after the relative tranquillity of the ’90s a new danger – international terrorism – came about threatening not a specific country or entity, but most of the Western Democracies as a whole; this determined America to make significant changes in its general line of foreign policy, and undertake large scale military campaigns against Afghanistan and then Iraq. Both of these moments are intimately connected with the USA, its overall position on the global arena, and its present behaviour on the international stage. And, within the current layout of the international system the United States undoubtedly occupies a place of enormous importance; presently, I believe it wouldn’t be wrong to say that it is the sole actor with interests on global scale

Nitekim II. Konstantinos’un tahtını bırakması, Yunanistan’da krallığın

  • Angelopoulos and the Lingua Franca of Modernism
IntrodUctIon Angelopoulos and the Lingua Franca of Modernism Angelos Koutsourakis and Mark Steven he twenty-eighth Cannes Film Festival in 1975 was marked by the T enthusiastic reception of a film that did not officially represent Greece, the country of its production. The right-wing government of the time refused to nominate it because it considered the leftist portrayal of modern national history offensive. Yet a Greek filmmaker and his crew managed to smuggle a copy of this film and show it as part of Pierre-Henri Deleau’s renowned pro- gramme, the Directors’ Fortnight. The filmmaker was Theo Angelopoulos and the film Ο Θίασος (The Travelling Players, 1975). While the organisers of the festival were trying to find ways to sidestep the rules stipulating that only national commissions could be awarded festival prizes, by May 20, 1975 this 230-minute film had enjoyed its fourth screening in Cannes. Deleau’s anecdote typifies the passionate response of the cinéphile community: I remember once we had a four-hour film, and we thought no one would stay until the end. But it was Angelopoulos’ The Travelling Players: it got a standing ovation. At the back of the auditorium, there was this strange-looking man walking up and down in an almost military fashion, staring straight at Angelopoulos, who had his back to the stage. The man started to walk towards him and Angelopoulos began to get worried. Then he went down on his knees, kissed Angelopoulos’ feet and left without saying a word. It was Werner Herzog. Later, when I mentioned this to Werner, he told me that the film had made him jealous so he had to genuflect before the filmmaker.

THE HISTORY AND INTERVENTIONS OF THE HELLENIC LEAGUE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS (1918–2013) Michalis Moraitidis READING UP ON THE HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE: GOALS AND BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT The Hellenic League for Human Rights is the oldest organisation that defends and intervenes decisively for human rights in Greece, having made its appearance long before the acronym NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) entered the Greek vocabulary. The League is an association (somateio) set up under the provisions of the Greek Civil Code, and its history is intertwined with the contemporary his- tory of Greece and the many significant changes that occurred in the public sphere during its existence. In 2012, under the supervision of its current chairman Konstantinos Tsitse- likis, professor at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, the Hellenic League for Human Rights initiated a research project to examine its organisational history.1 The main intent of this ongoing project is to seek out and unearth the elements composing the history of the League from its establishment towards the end of the second decade of the 20th century (1918) to the present.2 This specific goal is achieved by studying relevant primary documents, in particular the private archives of committed former members of the League. These include the private archive of its founding chairman (chairmanship 1936) Alexandros Svolos, profes- sor of constitutional law at Athens University3 and leading member of the Greek Social Democratic Party (Sosialistiko Komma – Enosis Laikis Dimokratias, SK- ELD)4; the archive of Charalampos Protopappas, lawyer, leading proponent of the 1 Until now, there are no relevant books or articles dealing with the history of the Hellenic League for Human Rights.

This declaration included a prohibition on the exportation and re-exportation of munitions. Nonetheless, members of the Greek Government permitted Prodomos Bodosakis Athanasiadis, a close friend of Metaxas, and the Greek Powder and Cartridge Company (GPCC) to ship and supply weapons to both sides in the Spanish conflict on a large scale. The objective of this thesis is to examine Greece’s weapons and ammunition sales to the Nationalists and the Republic during the Spanish Civil War as well as Greece’s internal and foreign policies that allowed for these dealings to occur. This thesis will contend that high-ranking members of the Greek Government permitted Bodosakis and the GPCC to sell munitions to both sides of the conflict as an economic expedient despite the ideology of the Metaxas dictatorship.
