As I write this, we have just concluded another successful year at Notre Dame College Prep with the graduation of the Class of 2018 – that’s 61 successful years in a row, by my count. For me, and I am guessing most administrators, it is a wonderful experience to see these young men in their caps and gowns, with their supportive families nearby, ready to begin the next phase in their lives.

Another great experience for an administrator is to have alumni return to school just to talk. That happens frequently, and the more often it happens, the more I enjoy it. This year, I had a conversation with a young man who had just finished his sophomore year at Illinois State. He said he was home for a week before he returned to campus for the summer. He had two jobs and was using the income to pay his rent for the summer, while he took an additional course. Whatever was left of his income, he would use for the fall semester.

He talked about his time at Notre Dame College Prep. He spoke fondly about the fun experiences. He also said that his time at Notre Dame was difficult. The result was that he was quite prepared for college, unlike some of his college classmates who did not have the discipline to attend classes or do homework. He repeated that his time at Notre Dame was difficult, but it was worth it.

We hear that often. We hear that Dons leave Notre Dame with a good sense of who they are. We also hear that Dons leave with a strong sense of character. These are the kinds of things which do not appear on the diploma or on a school transcript. But they are, in the minds of many alumni, every bit as important as a classroom subject.

When we meet with prospective students and their parents, we are often asked why they should choose Notre Dame College Prep. Of course we are prepared to answer this important question, because parents are deciding – in many cases -- between a public school education and a Holy Cross education at an all- boys Catholic school. What we tell these parents is important, and to some extent, persuasive. Even more persuasive are the comments I have collected from alumni who have written me about their experiences.

To that end, let me ask of you a favor. Please read through this edition of the Legacy and enjoy the experience. Then please send me an email with your thoughts about how your time at Notre Dame benefited you. What have you learned about your time at Notre Dame that has proven to be most valuable. I cannot wait to hear from you. You can reach me at [email protected].

Now, enjoy reading through this year’s issue of The Legacy.

Sincerely,

Ralph J. Elwart President

Technology Upgrades with TechnoDons’ Help In August of 2017, the TechnoDons upgraded and remodeled computer equipment throughout NDCP. Thanks to the generosity of the River’s Foundation, they removed all the old PC’s in the Science Wing and replaced them with HP All-In-One PC’s. The new units have a larger screen but a smaller footprint leaving more room on the lab tables for experiments. The computer lab was also updated and remodeled. The TechnoDons removed all the old PCs, tables and reconfigured the lab with new All-in-One PCs. The new setup allows for collaboration and ease of movement throughout the classroom. In all, 74 PCs were upgraded in the two areas, providing students with state of the art equipment and modern learning labs.

11 Spirit Gala Notre Dame College Prep hosted our Spirit Gala dinner auction on April 21, 2018 at Chateau Ritz in Niles. Guests seemed to love the new venue for this 27th annual dinner auction, and the fact that it is under a mile from NDCP! The room was beautiful, filled with alumni, parents and friends celebrating the spirit of Notre Dame!

The cocktail hour was brimming with excitement, as guests participated in raffles and games and perused the extraordinary selection of gifts in the silent auction.

We were thrilled to welcome back our celebrity emcee, WGN News Anchor Micah Materre, for the third time! (Micah’s son, Louis Jackson, graduated from ND this May.) Her energy and excitement kicked off a great program which culminated in a very successful live auction and paddle raise!

Thank you to all who attended, volunteered and donated to this wonderful event. Special thanks to our amazing event chairs Kathy Ernst (Ryan ‘10), Alison Kutschke (Scott ‘16, Mark ‘18 & Craig ‘19), Melody Steffen (Kyle ‘16 & Brendan ‘18) and Kathy Flynn (Tommy ‘17 & Kevin ‘19). Brian Murray ‘03 President, Alumni Association 14 Memories of Homecoming and the Fifty Year Reunion of the Class of ‘67 By Al Pacer ‘67, 1967 Reunion Committee member

What could possibly bring an oncologist, a geologist, an author, a plastic surgeon, an FBI agent and a musician all back to NDCP at the same time? That’s easy – the 50 year reunion of the Class of 1967 during the weekend of September 29-30, 2017!

The weekend kicked off with the pregame pizza party in the ND Library as memories, friendships and tall tales were all enhanced.

Members of the Class of ‘67 were honored to bring the U.S. flag to the fifty yard line where members of the ND football team took it to be raised in the south end zone before a big conference win over Carmel Catholic of Mundelein.

Saturday afternoon saw a few dozen Dons enjoy a tour of ND and the school’s many new features. This was followed by mass in the chapel celebrated by Father Conyers and assisted by classmate Deacon Jim Ernst. Then it was off to the ‘67 reunion banquet where the classmates in attendance gave brief updates on their lives and whereabouts, as did long time faculty members A.J. Kozole and Dennis Roach.

An uncanny highlight developed when Paul Just ‘67 surprisingly reunited with his roommate from freshman year at the U of I in Champaign for the first time in nearly fifty years – current NDCP President Ralph Elwart! It just goes to show that you never know who you’ll run into at a Homecoming and class reunion unless you’re actually there!

The Alumni Association would like to thank the following 1967 classmates for spearheading and organizing the reunion; Bob Byrne, Ronnie Grey, Jim King, Bill Kusack, Pat McCaskey, Pete Newell and Al Pacer.

My life at ND started fifty years ago - I was in awe then and I am in awe now.” Frank Frisch ‘59 said, “I was shocked and then humbled, to be included in the Notre Dame Hall of Honor family. What I do is not about me but it’s about supporting the school, giving back and making a positive difference in the life of a Don or Dons.” Fred Angelini ‘76 added, “The Hall of Honor induction dinner and ceremony was a humbling experience. Following in the footsteps of my brother (Mike Angelini ‘74), first as a Notre Dame College Prep student, and now as a Hall of Honor member, made the evening even more special.”
