Welcome to Our Visitors

Thank you for sharing in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with us today. Please fill out a visitor’s card (found in the pew racks) and return it in the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit. And please introduce yourself after Mass.

If you are a Catholic, we at Our Lady of Walsingham receive Holy Communion kneeling and by intinction (both species on the tongue).

If you are not a Catholic, during Communion we invite you either to come forward with your arms crossed over your chest, or fingers across your lips, and receive a blessing from the Priest or Deacon, or remain in your pew and reflect on the presence of Christ.

The Wax, Wick, and Flame of Candlemas We commemorate an important episode in the life of Christ and mark a milestone in observing the last great festival of the Christmas cycle. On February 2, forty days after Christmas, the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Formerly called in the Latin Church the Feast of the Purifica- tion of Our Lady, this day has long been named in the East Hypapante Kyriou (“The Meeting of the Lord”), but in the English tradition it is better known as Candlemas. In keeping with the Mosaic Law, the infant Jesus, forty days after His birth, was presented in the Temple by His Blessed Mother and foster father. We have on this occasion yet another “epiphany” as the proph- etess Anna acclaims the Christ Child the Messiah and as the aged Simeon hails Him “a light to lighten the Gentiles.” Hence, an ancient feature of the Sacred Liturgy is the blessing and procession of candles as the culmination of the season’s crescendo of light. On Christmas, “the Light shines in the darkness,” but only a few receive it - Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds at the crib. Then at the Epiphany, “the glory of the Lord rises over Jerusalem” and the Light of Christ is manifested to the Gentiles flocking out of the dark- ness. And then on Candlemas the Light of the world (Lux mundi) comes to the Temple, to the Church, and we hold that very Light in our hands, passing the fire and spreading its luminous warmth. Recalling Simeon’s testimony that the horizons of Christ’s Light have been extended to the whole world, we should ponder also the deepening and renewal of that Light within us. The wax betokens the calling of human nature: just as the bees bring forth pure wax by their sacrificial labors, so the Virgin Mary brought forth the pure flesh of Christ, without corruption. The wick represents the soul of Christ hidden in the wax of flesh, and the flame signifies that divine life which is “a consuming fire.” As the fire burns the wick and consumes the wax, so Christ’s unending sacrifice of love consumes the natural man on the altar of the to give us a new and more luminous life akin to His own, that we might become our- selves light-bringers and Christ-bearers to all. The candles are further both a memento of our baptism and a prefiguration of the “holy flame” of the Paschal Light at the Easter Vigil. By virtue of their bless- ing, the candles received by the faithful become the bearer and intermediary of God’s graces. As a sacra- mental, they are the outward signs of the interior grace God gives to their users. Hence these candles are appropriately kept and lit by the faithful in their homes on family feasts, during storms or times of trial, for Communion of the sick, and even at the final passage through the gate of death to life hereafter. Candlemas is particularly dear to the English tradition, and nowhere was the Feast of the Presentation celebrated with more ardor and devotion than in medieval England. In his study of popular religion in the Middle Ages, Eamon Duffy describes the colorful processions organized by lay guilds and devotional fraternities, involving the entire Christian community in the winter festivity honoring the Light of the World. Processing around the village church with lighted candles, singing Psalm 47 and the Nunc Dimittis, all the faithful would thus contemplate and incarnate “the Christmas paradoxes of the strength of the eternal God displayed in the fragility of the new-born child, of the appearance of the divine light in the darkness of human sin, of renewal and rebirth in the dead time of the year, and of the new life of Heaven manifested to Simeon’s, and the world’s, old age.” ~ Dr. Clint Brand

The Collect V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. O God, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot al- ways stand upright: grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world with- out end. Amen. The Lesson: 1:4-5, 17-19 In the days of Josiah the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. “But you, gird up your loins; arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its princes, it priests and the people of the land. They will fight against you; but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, says the Lord, to deliver you.” V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 71 [In te, Domine, speravi] Chant, Francis Edward Gladstone (1845-1928)

In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust; let me never be | put to · con- | fusion: but rid me and deliver me in thy righteousness; incline thine | ear un-to |me, and | save me. Be thou my stronghold, whereunto I may | alway · re- | sort: thou hast promised to help me, for thou art my | house of · de- |fence, · and my | castle.

Deliver me, O my God, out of the |hand of · the un- |godly, out of the hand of the un- |righteous and |cruel |man. For thou, O Lord God, art the thing |that I |long for: thou art my hope, |even |from my |youth.

Through thee have I been holden up ever | since · I was | born: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s womb: my | praise · shall be |alway · of | thee. My mouth shall daily speak of thy righteousness | and sal- | vation; for I | know no | end there- | of.

I will go forth in the strength of the | Lord |God, and will make mention of | thy | righteous - ness | only. Thou, O God, hast taught me from my youth | up · until | now: therefore will I | tell of · thy | won-drous | works.

The Epistle: I Corinthians 12:31-13:13 Brethren, earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Adorabo Psalm 138:2 Alleluia. Alleluia. I will worship toward thy holy temple: and will sing praises unto thy Name. Alleluia. The Holy Gospel: St. Luke 4:21-30 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. + A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord. At that time, Jesus began to say in the synagogue, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself; what we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here also in your own country.’” And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet ; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong. But passing through the midst of them he went away. V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

My Jesus, I believe that thou art truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love thee above all things, and I desire to receive thee into my soul.
