The Editors: will not deal, except subordinately, with questions of textual criticism or philology ; but taking the English text in the Revised Version as their basis, they will aim at com bining a hearty acceptance of critical principles with loyalty to the Catholic Faith. The series will be less elementary than the Cambridge Bible for Schools, less critical than the International Critical Com mentary, less didactic than the Expositor's Bible ; and it is hoped that it may be of use both to theological students and to the clergy, as well as to the growing number of educated laymen and laywomen who wish to read the Bible intelligently and reverently. Each commentary will therefore have (i) An Introduction stating the bearing of modern criticism and research upon the historical character of the book, and drawing out the contribution which the book, as a whole, makes to the body of religious truth.

  • Lesson 7A FINAL (GENERAL Or LAST) JUDGMENT
Lesson 7A FINAL (GENERAL or LAST) JUDGMENT Beloved Father of Mercy and Justice, We Your children, offer our lives as a pure and holy sacrifice, uniting our lives and our death to the life and death of Your Son and our Savior. At the Final Judgment we will stand united with the Body of Christ, body and soul, to receive Your Son's judgment. We will face this last and definitive judgment unafraid as the Books of Works are opened to reveal the imperishable deeds of love and mercy accumulated by the Church. This is the treasure stored up for eternity which Your children offer in the name of Christ our Savior and Redeemer. Send Your Holy Spirit, Lord, to lead us in this lesson of our study on the Eight Last Things. We pray in the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. + + + While I was watching thrones were set in place and one most venerable took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames; its wheels were a burning fire. A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was in session and the books lay open. Daniel 7:9-10 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and, because he is the Son of man, has granted him power to give judgment.

  • Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory
Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory Sometime between AD 1306 and AD 1321, the Italian Dante Alighieri wrote an epic poem called the Divine Comedy. Whether you have read the Divine Comedy or not, its images are most likely the ones that come to mind when you think of the Christian conceptions of the afterlife. Divided into three major sections called canticas, the poem describes the journey of Dante (the protagonist in the work) through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Thirty-three cantos comprise each cantica; thus when the introductory canto is included, the entire poem consists of one hundred cantos. The plot of this narrative poem begins on Holy Thursday evening and continues through Wednesday of Easter week in the year 1300, when Dante was thirty-five years old. It is written in the first person, so the reader can easily relate to it as an allegory―that is, a story whose characters, events, and objects have symbolic meanings beyond their literal meanings. For fourteenth-century hearers, a comedy was a story with a happy ending. In the case of the Divine Comedy, the happy ending is human redemption and salvation, which explains its Holy Week setting. The purpose of this essay is not to explicate the Divine Comedy but rather to survey the development of Christian conceptions of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. However, the imagery and literary expressions of the Divine Comedy help to capture the richness and complexity of Christian beliefs about the afterlife. Hell In the Inferno, the first cantica of the Divine Comedy, Dante finds himself lost in a dark forest at the entrance to Hades (the underworld) on the eve of Good Friday.

  • Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell
Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell: A Christian Perspective In Christian tradition, death is the end of individual life on earth, but not the end of personal consciousness, which survives the death of the body as the soul. Death, then, is the separation of the soul from the earthly body. However, the whole Christian tradition hopes for reunification of the soul with a resurrected and transformed body at the end of history, so the soul will, once again, be embodied in the resurrection. The process of death is difficult for most people. Not only does it entail pain, but increased dependence on others. Consequently, many people hope for a quick and painless death. But in Christian tradition, a sudden and unexpected death is not a good death. This is because Christians believe that at death one comes into the presence of God, and therefore of judgment. For this one needs to be prepared. Jesus teaches that we must repent (Mark 1:14), learn to love one another (Matthew 22:36-40) and forgive those who have wronged us, otherwise we ourselves will not be forgiven (Matthew 6:14-15). The time of dying therefore is an extremely important period in which to forgive others, say goodbye to loved ones, settle one’s material affairs, and most importantly make one’s peace with God. Death is the end of our earthly journey, but is the beginning of the much longer journey in the afterlife. In Christian teaching, this afterlife journey can be a beautiful and fulfilling experience or it can be traumatic (see Matthew 5; 25: 31-46).

  • The Four Last Things Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell Agenda
The Four Last Things Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell Agenda 1 Life Everlasting 2 Death 3 Judgment 4 Hell 5 Heaven 6 Your Destiny 1. Life Everlasting “I believe in…the life everlasting. Amen” Apostles Creed We all sense a desire for something more than this world. • “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in thee” (St. Augustine, Confessions, 1.1.1, Polkington trans.) We all sense the intrinsic value of people. • “Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God” (St. John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, 1.2) Cf. 2 Peter 1:4 “I believe in…the life everlasting. Amen” Apostles Creed We have the ability to reason about abstractions. • “The operation of anything follows the mode of its being” (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, 1.75.3). Thus the Church rejects annihilationism. “ The Church teaches that every spiritual soul is created immediately by God—it is not “produced” by the parents— and also that it is immortal: it does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the body at the final Resurrection. d” Catechism of the Catholic Church, Para. 366 Thus the Church rejects reincarnation. “ Death is the end of man's earthly pilgrimage, of the time of grace and mercy which God offers him so as to work out his earthly life in keeping with the divine plan, and to decide his ultimate destiny.

[p.7] Chapter I Judgment in the Old Testament: Shaphat© The basic Old Testament idea about judgment may be summed up very simply in the words of Deuteronomy i. 17, ‘the judgement is God’s’. This is not to deny that there is much in the Old Testament about the judgment of man as well as about that of God. Indeed, it is probable that, if we could trace the history of the word back to its remotest origins, we should find that its first use was for the judgment that men exercise. Then, when their own practice had given them the concept of judgment, men began to apply it to the mighty acts of God and to think of Him as active in judgment. Even so, we should have to bear in mind that as far as we know judgment was never a purely secular process.
