P CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME R I E S T F I E L D S

Today, we welcome Dartfordians RFC to Priestfields for the next round of the league programme, before the Christmas break. Recent games between our two teams have always been open, keenly fought affairs and given recent form, I expect more of the same today.

Medway RFC continue to go from strength to strength, with all sections of the club performing well. We have been shortlisted for the Medway Sports Awards for both CLUB OF THE YEAR and our very own 1st Team have also been shortlisted for TEAM OF THE YEAR, along with Matthew Kuhn and Gordon Stone for UNSUNG HERO, so fingers crossed I’ll have something more to report on Saturday. More importantly, our ladies team have recorded their very first win of the season and our ladies head coach Lee Fiddyment is now more than confident that the ladies will continue to get stronger.

So on behalf of the exec and our chairman whose currently down under in Australia I would like to wish every one a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year, and look forward to seeing you all on the 5th January 2019 for our first game of the season.

P PP P R I E S T F I E L D S RRI EI ESSTTF FI EI EL LDDSS R I E S T F I E L D S THE STORY OF OUR CLUB THROUGH THE DECADES

December 1938 - A tremendous rally in the last three minutes saw Rochester score twice against the Beds & Herts Regiment and draw a thrilling match 9-9. Heavy rain transformed the field into a quagmire. The outsides rarely saw the ball with the game developing into a titanic forward battle. Forbes scored early on, following a brilliant three-quarter movement. Eric Cooper made a magnificent kick from a penalty and George Clay scored to equalise as the final whistle sounded.

(Left) Eric Cooper, George Clay and the Club’s founder Ronald Buxton

December 1948 – Rochester have increased their player numbers to over forty and were able to field two XVs, despite the absence of several players who were playing in the annual King’s School versus Old Boys rugger match.” The Rochester Rugby Football Club had been founded by Ron Buxton, a former pupil at the King’s School, and it would appear that the School was still a source of potential players. The Rochester City 1st XV played a 0-0 draw against Thanet Wanderers at Gillingham. The defence was good on both sides and a draw was a fair result

December 1958 - A good end to the year as Rochester achieved a 9-0 win over Thames Poly, their first victory in over a month. It was a triumph for the forwards, their combined- play being a pleasure to watch. From a scrum won on the half-way line, the ball went through several pairs of hands before big Neville Hetterley touched down. Ten minutes later, a clever kick-ahead by George Hornby, saw Charlie Rowles follow up quickly for the try. The scoring was finished-off when a blind-side break saw the speedy Rowles hare away for his second.

(Left) Charlie Rowles and Neville Hetterley, Rochester’s try scorers.

December 1968 - In the local derby match at Priestfields, Rochester suffered a 12-8 defeat at the hands of the Old Anchorians. On a pitch which was in remarkably good condition Harry Grove took a high pass and after a fine run crashed over under the posts. Tony Evans converted and added a penalty.

December 1978 - The club’s ‘journal’, the ‘Medway Mercury’, first published at the start of that season, and “definitely not a registered newspaper” provided the information that

On the real ale front, there was a choice of Burton Ale and Draught Bitter with Stones Bitter from Charrington which was retailing at 29p a pint!! December 1978 – Medway lacked form as they struggled to a 15-4 victory over Ashford at Priestfields. Awarded a free-kick Trevor French took a quick tap, passed to his brother Geoff who dropped a perfect goal. Then Taff Gwilliam collected his own kick ahead and ran around the full-back to score. John Rogers converted. For a period in the second- half Medway had to defend desperately as Ashford applied pressure. However, Gwilliam eventually broke the dead-lock with a surging run. He passed to Brian Waite who continued the move before slipping the ball to Gordon Connell to finish it off. Rogers converted again. December 1988 – Medway surprised their neighbours Gravesend, playing two divisions higher, with a well-deserved 17-11 win in this friendly at Priestfields. Flanker Andy Rogers went over following a good drive from a lineout. In the second-half, as the visitors gradually reduced arrears to two points, a superbly controlled Medway five metre scrum resulted in a try for Dave Davies. Mick Cadmore kicked three penalties. December 1998 – In a game that Medway dominated for long periods in this league fixture at Mote Park, Maidstone managed to get the victory by 13 points to 3,Colin Germany kicked a penalty for Medway’s only points. Medway 1st. XV: Noel Parris; Geoff Kempt, Dave Francis, Adrian Greenstreet, Simon Thomas; Colin Germany, Simon Fisher; Paul Essenhigh (capt.), Lee Marrriott, Nick Shaw; Mark Jones, Lee Fiddyment; Ian Dance, Dave Davies, Andy Rogers. December 2008 - This league game between the two top sides, their first since Old Gravesendians won the Kent Vase in May, saw Medway emerge with a 10-0 win. With many enforced changes, Medway took time to settle. However, good possession from a lineout saw Colin Chapman beat two defenders to crash over in the corner. Home supporters had to wait until 17 minutes from the end when a break started by Simon Green, which also involved Dafydd Ruffell, Michael Scaife and Chapman was finished-off by Danny Williams in the corner. Taff Gwilliam, Medway’s head coach was delighted with the win, which he felt was testament to the growing strength in the club.

Danny Williams, pleased with his try!
