Title: “This is our Dynasty.” How the characters in Soap Opera Dynasty have changed over time with focus on sex, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and power. When the Soap Opera Dynasty first appeared in the 80´s it was not so popular as Dallas or Falcon Crest. But the aim of Dynasty was to do things more provocative. Thus, one character was homosexual, one was a “bitch”, and there was more focus on the females. The characters lived a luxury life with much drama, love, and expectations. After one season it became increasingly popular and was awarded several times. In 1989 Dynasty ended after nine seasons, and in 2016 news about a reboot was appeared on the CW and Netflix. The producers of the reboot chosed to take the best pieces of the originals and make a modern twist on the new version; there were new actors with the same characters, except that they now chosed to change certain characters regarding sex, ethnicity and sexuality. The aim of this study is to compare the original with the reboot and se how the characters have changed over time with focus on sex, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and power; and also, to relate these alterations to societal change. To undertake this study, I use the theory of social constructionism, gender studies, media analyses, and role and identity. The methods are content analysis. Inledning Under 1940-talet myntades begreppet såpopera eftersom det finansierades av ett tvålföretag och uttrycket kom att bli permanent.1 Programmen sändes via radio och syftet var att nå ut till hemmafruarna så de kunde lyssna samtidigt som de arbetade med sina sysslor i hemmet. Under 1950–1960 talet utvecklades programkonceptet från att sändas i radion till att programmen sändes i tv. Genren kom att bli mer populär under 1970–1980 talet eftersom de påkostade och lyxiga programmen som Dallas, Falcon Crest och Dynastin förgyllde tv- kvällarna. Syftet med Dynastin var främst att konkurrera ut både Dallas och tv-serien Falcon Crest. Dynastin var mer provokativ, och fokuserade mer på kvinnornas roll i serien. Kvinnorna hamnade ofta i slagsmål – de hade inte sällan specifika rollkaraktärer och kunde exempelvis ha en homosexuell framtoning eller framställas som häxor eller ”bitchiga”. Tv-serien sändes mellan åren 1981 till1989 och därefter gjordes två långfilmsavsnitt som sändes i början på 1990-talet. Blake Carrington, Chrystle Carrington och Alexis Carrington Colby var bara några av de centrala och långvariga rollkaraktärerna som följde med under tv-seriens gång och varje vecka satt miljontals framför soffan för att följa med hur familjen Carrington och Colby levde ett påkostat och lyxigt liv med både otrohet, drama och förväntningar på varandra. Sveriges Television(SVT) hade tv-monopol och valde att sluta sända Dynastin efter tre säsonger, trots höga tittarsiffor. Tittarna fick därmed inte se hela serien förrän senare på 1990- talet när TV-monopolet hade upphört och den nytillkomna kanalen TV4 började sända hela serien.2 År 2017 kom en reboot av såpoperan där producenterna till serien valde att plocka de mest vinnande koncepten ur originalserien, för att sedan uppdatera den nya med en modernare tvist.3 Den nya versionen har uppdaterats med nya skådespelare och några karaktärer har nu annat kön, sexuell läggning samt etnicitet. Jag vill se hur rollkaraktärerna har förändrats över tid och hur den förändrade tidsandan kan ha påverkat karaktärerna under de decennier som har passerat mellan de två versionerna av Dynastin. Undersökningen av rollkaraktärerna och framställningen genomförs framför allt med fokus på kön, genus, sexualitet, etnicitet och makt. På så vis utgör uppsatsen en sociokulturell kartläggning hur av hur dessa samhällsförändringar avspeglas i de två olika versionerna av såpoperan. De centrala rollkaraktärerna som är aktuella för en jämförelse är Blake Carrington, Krystle/Christal/Christle Carrington(Flores/Jennings) Alexis Carrington, Steven Carrington, Fallon Carrington(Colby), Sammy Jo ”Sam”(Samantha/ Samuel), Jeff Colby, Cecil Colby samt Michael Culhane. Undersökningens frågeställningar lyder enligt följande: - Hur framställs de centrala rollfigurerna i såpoperan Dynastin från 1980-talet i jämförelse med rebooten som kom år 2017 och framåt? - Hur har rollkaraktärerna förändrats med avseende på kön, genus, etnicitet, sexualitet och makt i tv-serien? - Hur har den förändrade tidsandan påverkat förskjutningarna av rollkaraktärerna i serien? 6 2. Tidigare forskning I Medier, genus och makt fokuserar Gunilla Jarlbro på hur kvinnor och män framställs och gestaltas i media såsom tv-serier, tidningar samt reklam. Hon undersöker bland annat hur genuspresentationen ser ut i verkligheten och hon inleder sin bok med en övergripande genusforskning samt feministisk forskning.4 Jarlbros resultat visar att genuspresentationen är manligt dominerad när det gäller hur könsfördelningen i media. Hennes slutsats är att medieinnehållet inte har förändrats utan fortsätter att skildra världen från männens perspektiv. Anledningen
