The idea was launched in 1999 by Senator David Brownhill, later the Chair of the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, at the Murrumbateman Cool Climate Wine Show. Australia is the second biggest Riesling producer in the world next to Germany, and it seemed right that it should promote the variety. The concept was further developed by Ken, with the Hyatt Hotel Canberra (the major sponsor at the time) and a group of Canberra business people, including (the late) Jim Murphy AM, James Service, Paul Walshe, and Emmanuel Notaras, together with the ACT Government. Mr Wolf Blass AM accepted an invitation to be the first Chairman of judges and held that position for six years. He introduced the Wolf Blass Award, became a major sponsor, member of the Committee and is now the International Ambassador for the Canberra International Riesling Challenge. Ken Helm was elected Chairman and from that position has guided development over the last sixteen years. The inaugural event in October 2000 at the Hyatt Hotel Canberra attracted 137 entries from across Australia. The trophy for the Best Riesling went to McWilliams 1996 Eden Valley Rhine Riesling. In 2002 entries were sought from New Zealand, and in 2003 the inaugural Wolf Blass Award was announced to recognise a person or innovation that made a major contribution to the development and promotion of Riesling. In 2004 the German Ambassador, Dr Klaus Peter Klaiber, offered a Perpetual Trophy for the Best German Wine and organised a comparative tasting of 21 German wines. This initiative resulted in the event becoming the Canberra International Riesling Challenge from 2005, and since then it has attracted increasing numbers of wines from Riesling producers across the world. The international concept has been greatly assisted by Canberra’s diplomatic missions, which provide a unique opportunity to source Rieslings from various countries through the ambassadors and high commissioners. The event has also led to the development of close relationships with many Ambassadors and High Commissioners from wine producing countries and close co-operation on issues round wine development, production, exports, education etc. Seminars conducted by Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga were introduced to promote better winemaker and appreciation of the many styles of Riesling. A Master Class is also conducted annually to allow Riesling enthusiasts to build their knowledge and enjoy guided tastings of the world’s best Rieslings. Consumers are able to taste all of the Rieslings judged at a consumer tasting at the conclusion of the judging. This is a unique opportunity to taste some of the best Rieslings the world has to offer, many of which are not readily available in Australia. The Challenge draws judges from German, USA, England, and New Zealand and from winemakers, media and sommeliers from across Australia. 2008 saw the introduction of judging on a regional level, a first in Australia for an international event. It showcases the individual characteristics unique to a wine’s location in the world, the soil, the climate, aspect etc. A concept now being promoted by the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation for promotion of Australian wines. It has become an internationally-recognised wine event, making it the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The ACT Government’s 16 years support for the event has been a key elements in its success in promoting, the Riesling wine styles, the Canberra Wine Industry and Canberra as a tourist destination to the world. 2010 saw the introduction of professional management of the Challenge with the appointment of Commerce Management Services to stage the event and to run the business of the Challenge. Ken Helm’s contribution to the development and promotion of the Riesling Challenge, the variety and the development of Canberra Wine industry, was recognised with an Order of Australia (AM) on 26 January 2010. That year saw the publication of Riesling in Australia by Ken Helm and Trish Burgess (former secretary of CIRC) which was the first comprehensive book on the history, regions, legends, producers and winemaking of Riesling in Australia. The Challenge event in 2012 saw the introduction of the 100 point judging system, plus a Riesling Master Class for the wine industry and consumers, added to the event. In July 2016 we took the Challenge overseas, holding the first Canberra /Wellington intercity event - the Capital Cities Riesling Challenge – to celebrate the signing of the Canberra/ Wellington Sister Cities Agreement on 6 July. The Canberra International Riesling Challenge foray into Wellington New Zealand on 7 July 2016 met with great success, despite Wellington winning the “bragging rights” for the top Riesling of the inaugural Capital Cities Riesling Challenge. It is intended that this will become a regular event, along with extending the Capital Cities Riesling Challenge to other capital cities to promote the best Rieslings from Australia and the world and the Australian wine industry. 2 2 Canberra International Riesling Challenge October 2016 Canberra International Riesling Challenge October 2016 12 – 17 October 2015 Patron: ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA International Riesling Ambassador: Wolf Blass AM Organising Committee Ken Helm AM, Chairman Graeme Shaw James Service James Austin Wolf Blass AM Jean Coddington Ian Cox Jonathan Kobus Manny Notaras Phil Scott Paul Walshe Executive Officer: Sue Hart National Secretariat: Commerce Management Services Judges Awards Gold Medal 95.0 – 100.0 Silver Medal 90.0 – 94.0 Bronze Medal 85.0 – 89.0 Chairman of Judges John Belsham Foxes Island Wines / Wine Focus, New Zealand Judging Panel Members Greer Carland Winemaker and Consultant, Tasmania Anne Krebiehl MW Wine Writer, London UK Ralph Kyte-Powell Wine writer and Judge, Victoria Trent Mannell Senior Buyer, Australian Wine Selector, New South Wales Kerri Thompson Winemaker, Wines by KT, South Australia Jim Trezise President, New York Wine & Grape Foundation, USA Associate Judging Panel Members Steve Baraglia Senior Winemaker, Pikes Wines, South Australia Brock Harrison Winemaker, Pernod Ricard Winemakers, South Australia Robbie O’Dea Wine Merchant/Manager, Airport Market Cellars, ACT Stewards Phil Scott (Chief Steward); Brian Sinclair; Adrian Farrant; Rona Farrant; Allen Grant; Kate Hibberson; Samuel Kilda; Harry McCabe; Paul Ngo; James Paisley; Lucinda Staley 3 3 Canberra International Riesling Challenge October 2016 ELITE GOLDS Canberra International Riesling Challenge October 2016 ELITE GOLDS excluding Trophy winners. • In the Time It Has Taken James Halliday to Compile His 26 Australian Wine
In the time it has taken James Halliday to compile his 26 Australian Wine Companions, the Chardonnay grape has emigrated to almost every hill and vale across our viticultural landscape. No other variety has adapted more successfully, from single barrel selections to vast commercial blends. No other inspires such singular focus in our winemakers to sharpen their craft. No other sends vignerons searching, with gold fever, for that next hill, or clone, or aspect. Chardonnay alone explores the breadth and personality of all Australian wine regions. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie.
