What If Homosexuality Is Not a Threat but An
What if homosexuality is not a threat but an opportunity? Could God use one of the most controversial moral issues in our nation to awaken His church rather than damage it? This requires a seismic shift in thinking, which some of us might not be eager to make. I find it much simpler to issue a commendation or condemnation while keeping a distance. But we need Spirit-empowered love to move toward those struggling with SSA without despising or excusing their sin, because their sin is our sin— our hearts are no different! Love and tolerance overlap but are not identical concepts. The Bible describes a God who loves the entire world but does not tolerate sin. The person beset with homosexual temptation should evoke our concern, sympathy, help, and understanding, not our scorn or enmity. Even more, such a person should kindle a feeling of solidarity in the hearts of all Christians, since we all struggle to properly manage our erotic passions. For homosexuals a denunciation of homosexuality may feel like an indictment of homosexuals. Regrettably, some of this pain may be unavoidable in the hope of doing away with the greater pain of living outside of God's redemptive plan For though I grieved you in the letter, I do not continue to have regrets— though I used to have regrets, for I see that letter (though only for a short time) grieved you. Now I rejoice, not because you were grieved but because you were grieved into repenting. For you were grieved in a godly manner (lit., in accordance with God ), in order that you would in no way be caused loss or damage by us. -

Be a Doer of the Word
Be Doers of the Word James 1:22-25 Introduction - James addresses the very crux of Christian living in 22-25 . the difference between hearing and doing God’s Word. - There are people who know the Bible a lot better than any of us but who don’t do what it says in their lives. - Acquaintances—seminary graduates, lives in shambles because of adultery (George). - Others have allowed the love of money and the good life to detour them. - They know the truth, but don’t do it. How do they know the truth? It’s in the Bible (Read 1 John 2:16). - It doesn’t happen just on the personal level. There are some trends in what is being called the “emerging church” that relate to knowing versus doing, too. - Jay Bakker is a youth pastor and the son of Jim and Tammy Bakker. He told Larry King that “God told me” homosexuality is no longer a sin, because times have changed. - Mantras (chanting or repetitions of a single word or phrase as prayer) as a way becoming one with God (contrary to Matthew 6:7). - There is something called a “new missiology” in the emerging church that promotes throwing out the term “Christian” altogether. One leading author, Brian McLaren, whom Time magazine called one of the 25 most influential evangelical leaders in America, writes, “I don't 1 believe making disciples must equal making adherents to the Christian religion. It may be advisable in many (not all!) circumstances to help people become followers of Jesus and remain within their Buddhist, Hindu, or Jewish contexts.” - This is not just a recent phenomenon. -

Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms
Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms by Denis J. Bekkering A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfillment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2015 © Denis J. Bekkering 2015 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Studies of religion and fandom have generally considered sincere devotion a fundamental point of contact between the two cultural phenomena, an assumption not reflected in fan studies proper. This dissertation aims to expand the scope of research on religion and fandom by offering cultural histories of “unfaithful” fan followings of three controversial American televangelists – Robert Tilton, Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner, and Jim Bakker – dating from the 1980s to 2012, and consisting of individuals amused by, rather than religiously affiliated with, their chosen television preachers. It is argued that through their ironic, parodic, and satirical play with celebrity preachers widely believed to be religious fakes, these unfaithful fans have engaged in religious work related to personal and public negotiations of authentic Christianity. Additionally, it is demonstrated that through their activities, and in particular through their media practices, these fans have impacted the brands and mainstream representations of certain televangelists, and have provoked ministry responses including dismissal, accommodation, and counteraction. iii Acknowledgements Family comes first. My wife Erica is the main reason that this project has been completed. -

Compilation | Coronavirus 12-13 May 2020 As of 1630
COMPILATION | CORONAVIRUS 12-13 MAY 2020 AS OF 1630 Overview: Driving coverage was Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s warning that the U.S. could suffer a long, painful downturn if Congress does not provide more economic relief to prevent a wave of bankruptcies and prolonged joblessness. There was also substantial coverage of the warning from the FBI and DHS that Chinese and Iranian hackers are targeting U.S. organizations conducting COVID-19-related vaccine research. Leading defense-related coverage was U.S. Army Europe’s announcement that Exercise Allied Spirit with Poland will take place in June. The announcement of U.S.-Polish training exercise Allied Spirit was covered primarily in defense outlets, which reported on resuming allied exercises following the “pandemic pause” (AFP), and noted the Army’s statements that it plans to take precautionary measures against the virus. The exercise, which will involve 6,000 U.S. and Polish troops, was to be part of the division-scale DEFENDER Europe exercise before it was canceled earlier this year due to the coronavirus, according to several outlets. USAREUR said that many of the strategic readiness goals had been achieved by the time the drills were halted, but that future European exercises are being discussed with objectives similar to those initially planned, Army Times reported. Other DoD-related news: • Pres. Trump plans to name the head of U.S. Army Materiel Command Gen. Gustave Perna and former GlaxoSmithKline executive Moncef Slaoui to lead Operation Warp Speed, described by Bloomberg as a “Manhattan Project-style effort” to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
