Thursday, August 13th ARROWHEAD’S BIRTHDAY!

Friday, August 14th Last Day for Our Campers

As we begin our last week at camp I wanted to take some time to reflect on one of the most challenging years in the history of Arrowhead. When we first heard about COVID-19 back in February, we never thought it could leave such a long and lasting impact on all of us. In March came the shut downs, in April came the spikes in PA, in May came more uncertainty followed by Chester County going to the green phase in late June. Throughout all this uncertainty you stuck with us and we could never thank you enough. To our parents, staff and campers…..thank you!

This camp season was like none other. Constant hand washing, small groups, changed schedules so that camper’s weren’t mixing and of course, the mask wearing. It was very hard seeing your children come off the bus and not being able to hug them or give them high fives after not seeing them for 10 months and some seeing them for the first time. There was no visiting day, overnight weekends, Friday shows or special club days but we all persevered together. When the campers are here, we feel somewhat normal. We hear their laughter, see them play, see them get to just be kids! Something they were not able to do the last 4 months!

As camp ends this Friday, we still have an uncertain future ahead of us. Many of us are going back to online schooling for the foreseeable future and back to isolation and not getting to see our friends and playing every day. We want you to know that we will be here next summer, waiting for everyone’s happy smile, laugh and being together where we can hug again and be “normal.” Although this was not a normal camp season, it was one of our most rewarding as so many parents shared with us how their children have been back to their old selves again. We all took a chance coming to camp this summer and we do believe we had an extremely successful one and hope you feel the same.

We will miss you all and can’t wait to have a normal Arrowhead summer next year!

Yours for better camping, Brian Witt

JUNIOR CAMP

Although this summer looks much different than previous summers, the Junior Campers are having a blast at Arrowhead! The Junior Camp has been keeping busy. Many Junior Campers had milestones this summer, such as catching their first fish, moving up a swim group, or getting their first hole in one at Mini Golf. Junior Campers especially enjoyed participating in Halloween Day, Pajama Day, and the Junior Olympics. The final week of camp will bring even more special events, like the Road Runner Race, Tournament Week and the Awards Ceremony. This summer wouldn’t have been complete without the incredible CIT’s, Junior Counselors, and Senior Counselors. They work so hard to make sure all our campers are happy and having fun. I know the next week will bring even more smiles, laughter and joy. Aunt Carrie Chaitt – Junior Camp Director

INTERMEDIATE CAMP The summer of 2020 certainly started off as one of the most uncertain summers in our ARROWHEAD history. We wanted to make summer fun for everyone, while maintaining our safety standards from years past while incorporating new measures to keep everyone healthy. Nobody was sure how the weeks would play out, but we were pleasantly surprised to see just how well our intermediate campers adjusted to these new normals. The campers swam, ran, and had fun on the grounds. They loved the lake, pioneering, arts and crafts, nature study, computers, batting cages, music & dance, archery, marksmanship, the pool, tennis, driving range, gym, and horseback riding. Even the rain didn’t stop us from bringing fun into all that we did. ARROWHEAD truly is a “Child’s Paradise”. I want to give a special thanks to our counselors: Mor, Anna, Abby, Alexis, Evan, Chris F., Chris Q., John, Keith and Scott and our junior counselors: Kate, Kayla, Rachel, Ashley, Sammy, Jeffrey, Justin, Dylan, Chris, Dean, Brady, Jared, Adam and Edo. We certainly wouldn’t have been able to have the positive summer that we had without their help and dedication. It was team work all summer long that brought us to where we are now. Thank you for sharing your children with us. We look forward to the summer of 2021 where we can continue to provide the services that you expect from our amazing summer paradise. Aunt Kristen Cheney – Intermediate Camp Director

SENIOR CAMP Well, this is certainly a summer we will never forget. The summer of 2020 at Arrowhead has been fascinating, eventful, crazy, wild and wonderful. It has truly spanned all the human emotions. We have come together as a Senior Division to make it a great summer, despite the obvious obstacles. We all wondered what it would be like to have no leagues, Color War, Swim Carnival or Senior Camp trip. Instead we doubled up on activities, sporting events, specialist run fun and the kids have enjoyed it just the same. Apprehension has become joy and for the 6 hours we are at camp we can forget about the outside world and truly enjoy our time together. It is a summer I will never forget and I known none of you will either. It also is a summer that shows us that we can do it right here at Arrowhead, no matter the obstacles and next year when we are back to normal we will be able to look back at it and (hopefully)smile.A special thanks to Uncles Shane, Chris, Kyle and Andrew and Aunts Tori, Jessica, Sophia, Allison and Ansleigh. Your dedication and love for the camp and kids has been inspirational. Also a very special thanks to the best JCs in the world: Katie, Bella, Angie, Gabby, Morgan, Eli, Jack, Lucas and Jordan. You have all been rocks this summer and we could never do it without you. See you all in 2021! Uncle Randy Straff- Senior Camp Director

3 CITs

For my first year as director of the CIT program, I was sure presented with a challenge. The challenge of working with al group of young people in the middle of a pandemic and have them learn and grow as both CITS and human beings. The mission was accomplished, thanks to this incredible group of boys and girls. No, we did not have the opportunity to go on the planned trips and we had to forego some of the in camp activities in order to keep everybody safe. Despite that, I saw you all grow and mature. You became better people and that is the most important thing. Many of you were put immediately into positions of authority and you handled the work beautifully. Your counselors loved you and your campers adored you. I was so impressed at how you all picked up the job and ran with it. We had the opportunity to do some training, but most of the positive results were because of your dedication and love of Arrowhead. I am confident that when all of you come back next year as JCs you will be tremendously prepared for the job. You will represent the new group of wonderful JCs that will take Arrowhead through the next three or four years. Good luck to all of you this school year and see y’all in the summer of 2021!!

Uncle Randy Straff- CIT Director

JUNIOR OLYMPICS The fourth annual Junior Olympics were held on July 27th and 28th of this year. On the first day, campers participated in the Opening Ceremonies, which included the passing of the Olympic Torch and Olympic Music. On the second day, campers represented Ireland, Sweden, England, , Japan, France, , and as they competed in a Photo Scavenger Hunt and relay races. After the camper competition, the counselors competed in a toilet paper mummy challenge, as the campers cheered them on. After a long day of competition, the campers watched as the Olympic Torch was extinguished. All campers received Olympic medals for their efforts and spirit. The two days were exciting and fun for all campers and counselors.

ARROWHEAD 2020 Bunk Picture Update It was a terrific day when all Arrowheaders received their new ARROWHEAD t-shirts and brought their brightest smiles with them for picture day. We are currently developing all photographs. Watch your mail in mid-September, as all Arrowheaders who were in attendance that day will be receiving their 2020 8X10 glossy bunk picture. Here’s to memories in the making!

PROPER FOOTWEAR AT CAMP We are informing all of our parents that sneakers and sneakers only are the appropriate footwear for your children to wear during our camp day. Any types of sandals, flip-flops, pool shoes etc. are not only inappropriate, but also dangerous. Our campers are engaged in various activities including running, jumping, climbing, etc. and sneakers are for these endeavors. Parents, we ask you to please follow our advice for the safety of your children. Thank you.

SOMETHING SERIOUS- SOMETHING SWEET! Many campers at ARROWHEAD have severe food and bee sting allergies. Due to the increasing amount of campers who enjoy celebrating their birthdays at camp we have to be extra cautious. We are asking that treats be sent in for special occasions only. A popular suggestion is Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts or Soft Pretzels. We are also insisting that all food of any kind be eaten inside the air-conditioned Mess Hall. This will enable us to monitor the bees, allergies and clean-up more safely. Thank you.

ARCHERY Archery has been amazing at Arrowhead this year! This is my 11th year at Arrowhead and the skills these campers have for archery is amazing! The returning campers are coming back with gusto and the new campers are picking up the needed skills quickly! Throughout the last six weeks of camp, I have seen campers go from not knowing how to hold a bow to winning with the highest points in their bunks! This week is tournament week where campers shoot one round of five arrows each and the high scores will earn top honors as the best archers at camp! I can’t wait to see how great these campers can get in the last week! Uncle Joel MARKSMANSHIP This past summer has shown that a camp experience is even more important for today’s youth than ever before. This is my second year as Marksmanship specialist and I still get a great feeling being part of this great staff and getting to see our campers transform from not knowing how, or for some what a pellet gun was, to learning the safety and the fundamentals of how to operate one. Over these last 5 weeks I have gotten the chance to see our campers transform from not knowing how to hold a pellet gun to hitting the target and increasing their scores with each passing week. I am looking forward to the rest of the summer with them and look forward to many more summers here with our campers and our great staff at Arrowhead.

Uncle Rob BOATING The 2020 Boating Staff has really been enjoying all of the Happy Campers that come to take excursions on beautiful Lake Arrowhead! By this point in the season, many, if not most, have earned their Canoe and/or Rowboat Licenses. The younger Campers have been enjoying our refurbished Duck Boats, exploring the shoreline and observing the many aquatic residents. Our older Campers enjoy their time in the Canoes, Rowboats, and Paddle boats. ALL of the Campers enjoy climbing to the top of the Island Tower and taking in the breezes and view afforded there. ALL of our Campers are careful to follow all of our safety guidelines in not stepping out onto the dock until they are properly wearing an appropriately sized Life Vest, and have been GREAT at wearing masks whenever there is more than one in a boat. In addition, ALL of the boats, life vests, and seat cushions are thoroughly sanitized between each bunk. We look forward to the rest of a wonderful season!

From Uncle Steve, Uncle Joe, & Aunt Jenna FISHING Everyone can find something fun to do at fishing at Arrowhead. Whether it is just sitting in the shade by the lake, seeing who can catch the most bluegills, or going on the hunt for a 20 inch bass, all the campers enjoy being at the lake. Before they can fish, campers have to earn their fishing licenses to ensure they can use the rod effectively and have the best chance of reeling something big in. By far the biggest thing anyone has ever caught or seen in the lake is Tank, a snapping turtle who is two feet long and weighs close to thirty pounds! Along with some much smaller red-eared sliders and the rest of the fish, fishing has plenty of wildlife to view up close and learn about. When someone does reel a fish or turtle in, they can even learn how to hold it and take the hook out so they are more adept to fish on their own! Fishing is one of the best places to be at Arrowhead! Uncle Chris, Uncle Dawson, Aunt Jenna, and Uncle Joe

5 TENNIS This has certainly been a unique summer at Arrowhead, but it has been a great experience getting to work with the campers at tennis! We began the summer by teaching the campers their basic skills, including grip and ready position, as well as doing different exercises to practice their ball control. From there, we have moved on to working with the campers on their forehand and backhand strokes, and we have even gotten the chance to teach some of the older groups how to serve. As we move toward the end of the summer, it has been so wonderful getting to see how much all of the campers have improved since the first week! When we aren’t working on skills with the campers, we have gotten to play some games with them, including “Jailbreak” and “King of the Court,” which they always have a lot of fun playing. With our Senior campers, we have even started to split them into groups on the different courts so that they can have doubles matches and get comfortable with hitting and returning the ball. It has been such a great summer at tennis, and we are all grateful for the chance to get to work with the campers! Aunt Ellen, Aunt Jenn, and Aunt Cynthia

ARTS & CRAFTS I We stayed busy and creative this summer in Art 1. Campers kicked off the summer with 4th of July inspired star streamers and popsicle stick flags. Younger campers water colored coffee filter butterflies, sewed paper bag purses, and fine tuned their glueing skills to make swimming frogs. Everyone showed off their creativity when they turned clay into turtles, snakes, necklace pendants, and magnets. Older campers made rock photo holders, wind chimes, and string art. It’s so exciting to see what these artists created with just a little paint, beads, glue, and of course, gimp! We’re getting messy with a week of tie dye to remember this summer for years to come! Aunt Macie GYM / PE As many of you know, COVID-19 made things quite challenging for everyone - including my first time working at Camp Arrowhead as the P.E./Gym Specialist. With that being said, planning fun and exciting activities worked well with the eager attitude of our campers since they've been cooped up at home for the past few months. Our junior campers let loose their unprecedentedly pent up stamina, and motor skills through games like "Dog Catcher" & "Ninja Turtle Soccer". Our intermediate and senior campers (boys and girls) demonstrated tremendous competition and teamwork while honing their mental and physical skills through games such as "Capture the Flag, Hunger Games Tag, and Mario Kart Racing". In spite of these crazy circumstances, all of the campers were quite impressive this year! Uncle David DRIVING RANGE The Driving Range at Arrowhead this summer has been a ton of fun! We start off every day by making sure we’re practicing our swing technique correctly, and just about every day we have time to hit a few as far as we can. Everybody has improved so much, even our friends who came in knowing a lot about golf already! Tournament week is a blast because our Extreme Golf Obstacle Course keeps everybody trying their best and having fun doing it all day long. My first summer at Arrowhead has been so much fun, I can’t wait for us all to finish the summer strong!

ELECTRONIC POLICY One of the best, if not the best part, of summer camp is being able to enjoy the great outdoors. This is especially true with the winter we just had which trapped us indoors. Add to this that our children have spent so much time sitting in rows with pencil & paper and taking standardized tests, and they really need to be participating in all that ARROWHEAD has to offer so we respectfully request that all cell phones, mp3 players, tablets, etc. stay at home where they will be "safe & sound."
