BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE PROJECT AREA: The North Ethiopia Regional Coordination Office (RCO) is found in Lalibela town of in the Amhara National Regional State. Currently, the North Ethiopia RCO is comprised of two active projects namely, Lalibela Food security Project and -Lalibela Emergency Response Project (ACT ETH 161). The North Wollo Zone in general and the Lasta and Lalibela woredas in particular are among the food insecure areas of the country and agriculture is the major source of livelihood to more than 95% of the population.

However, the project area is renowned worldwide for its rock-hewn churches and Lalibela is a high place of Ethiopian Christianity, still today a place of and devotion. In the mountainous area of Lalibela some 701 km from Addis Ababa, the eleven medieval monolithic churches were carved out of rock. Their building is attributed to King Lalibela who set out to construct in the 12th century a ‘New ’, after Muslim conquests halted Christian to the . Lalibela flourished after the decline of the Aksumite Empire.

1. El Nino Caused Lasta Lalibela Emergency Response Project

Project No: 03-4426 – ACT Appeal ETH161

Intervention Kebeles: The project is under implementation in eight rural kebeles including the above mentioned three kebeles of the Lalibela FS&LP namely; Gelesot, Erffa, Mawure, Shumshaha, Tirazfere, Tefelmay, Medaghe & Nakutele’ab.

Project Reach in 2016 (plan): 60,699 people (31521 M and 29178 F)

Target Groups: Drought affected people including children, women, disabled and elderly people as well as lactating and pregnant women.

Project period: Six months from February 1 to July 31, 2016.

Budget: USD 1,461,753 – Pledges revived USD 498,224

Funding partners: SIDA through Church of Sweden (CoS), COS, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and Finn Church Aid (FCA)

Project Goal  Mitigating the risks and reduce impacts of El Nino -induced drought and severe hunger on the target people in Lasta-Lalibela woreda.

Specific Objective  Beneficiaries’ able to meet their daily food needs and their assets are protected.  Drought coping capacity targeted HH to future drought risk is strengthened through risk mitigation actions.

Project expected outputs  Providing cash for targeted 2242 beneficiaries through CFW & DS  2.15 km of access road rehabilitated. Thinning and clearing carried of 69 ha of rangeland.50 ha of land treated through NRM measures.

Planned Project Activities  Distribution of cash to 2,242 affected communities.  Rehabilitation of 2.15 km of access road.  Clearing and tinning of rangelands 69ha.  Soil bund construction 35.43km  Stone bund construction 7.56km.  Stone check dam construction 588m3.

Results/Outputs to-date:  34.84 km stone bund constructed  42.23 km soil bund constructed  374.6 m3 stone check dam constructed  82 number of ‘half-moon’ structures constructed  2.709 km access road rehabilitated  136 ha of land cleared from bad weeds and shrubs

A total of 1,476 people (462 F) equivalent to 26,687 person-days (8,543 Female person days) participated in the construction of the conservation structure.

Each of the CfW participants was remunerated in cash at a rate of ETB 35 per day (1.66 USD) for the number of days he/she has worked. In addition, a total of 706 people (274 M and 432 F) or 10,631 person-days (6,505 F person-days) were supported with direct cash payments at the same rate. The beneficiaries for the direct cash support are elders, pregnant and lactating women and people with disability.

2. Lalibela Food Security & Livelihood Project 03-4697

Intervention Kebeles: Medaghe, Shumshaha and Nakutele’ab

Project Reach in 2016: 1,224 food insecure households (799 M-headed and 425 F-headed (4,670 people (2,310 M and 2,360 F)

Target Groups; Food insecure small holder farmers and their families

Project period: Three years. 01 November, 2014 to 31 October, 2017.

Funding partners: Canadian Food Grains Bank (CFGB) and Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR)

MAJOR ACTIVITIES PLANNED AND EXECUTED BY EXPECTED RESULT (BRIEFLY):

Overall Objective: The project’s overall objective is to contribute to the achievement of food security and improvement in the living standards to the target households i.e. 799 men-headed and 425 women-headed, in Lasta and Lalibela districts of Ethiopia.

Specific Objectives:  Increased consumption of sufficient food by the target households  Increased household income from the sale of crops & vegetables by the target HHs  Increased diversity of food consumed by targeted households  Improved natural resource management (NRM) in the farming and irrigation areas

 Result 1: Increased crop and vegetable production by target households  Result 2: Targeted households adopt CA (Conservation Agriculture) principles on their fields  Result 3: Increased access to food to the target households participating in Cash for Work  Result 4: Increased number of target farmers taking their produces to the mark  Result 5: Increased application of best nutritional practices  Result 6: Increased adoption/application of improved natural resources conservation and management practiced by the target households

Summary of progress against indicators to date: Progress to-date in project implementation can be considered as encouraging given that the project commenced implementation in March 2015. The major project achievements include the followings:

Results /Outcomes to-date  629 (51.4%) farmers in the project areas using at least three CA  82.24% of their CFW income of beneficiary households spent to purchase food  Average meals per day increased from 2.18 baseline to 2.47 meals per day  Increase in the number of households practicing at least two environment-friendly inputs from 446 (36.4%) at baseline, to 733 (59.9%)  Percentage of households using these improved environmental protection techniques increased from the baseline of 29.6% to 55.3%  475 (38.57%) farmers in the project areas using at least three conservation agriculture (CA)techniques (minimum tillage, permanent soil cover, crop rotation & associations, use of compost/manure, inter-cropping and living barriers with contour lines, which are known soil fertility improvement techniques  Percentage of household farmers using at least two specific natural resource management (NRM)
