Catholic Community of St. Pius X OCTOBER 30, 2011 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 1025 E. Madison Street Lombard, IL 60148 630-627-4526 www.stpiuslombard.org A YEAR OF RENEWAL ~ TO RESTORE ALL THINGS IN CHRIST THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 30, 2011 FOR ALL THE SAINTS ~ JESUS IS LORD The Scriptures at a Glance: First Reading: Malachi 1:14b—2: 2b, 8-10 The call to worship the one God as Father and to keep faith with one another. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13 You received the word of God which is now at work in those who believe. The Gospel: Matthew 23: 1-12 There is only one master who is the Christ, and the greatest among you is the one who serves. Some Reflections by Father Tom: In the great tradition of the Church, we believe in the Communion of Saints. Through baptism, all enter this Communion of Saints, joining us together in Christ. In fact, in her wisdom, the Church has always recognized those whose great holiness and tremendous struggles to grow in that holiness are publicly acknowledged by the faithful and called "Saints." However, we are also reminded that we too are among the saints and are in communion with them. We are, as it were, in the process of growing in holiness and facing the struggles that this implies. In addition, there are those, the faithful departed, who are on their way to the promise and enter a state of purification which has no time and space but is traditionally called purgatory, that is purgation. In our Catholic belief, we are all united in the Communion of Saints, the Saints in heaven, the souls of the just on the way, and the pilgrims here on the journey. We are united in Christ and form his Living Body. This week's Word calls our attention to the journey in which we are called to worship the one true God, our creator, to continue to live out in our lives the word of God that we received, and to be the sign of Christ's presence through our witness to Christ in service to Christ and to one another. United in the Communion of Saints and with Jesus as Lord, the Saints in heaven, the Souls of the Just in purgatory, and the pilgrims here on earth form the living and everlasting union in Christ for all eternity when we will all be joined together in heaven. The Harvest Festivals This week, we begin the Harvest Festivals with the Celebrations of All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Thanksgiving, and the Solemnity of Christ the King. We celebrate the great harvest of faith through our salvation in Jesus Christ. We celebrate the Harvest Master and his promise to us. November 1: The Solemnity of All Saints: Revelation 7: 2-4, 9:14 Dressed in white and bearing palm branches, the saints rejoice in the heavenly liturgy. 1 John 3: 1-3 We shall be called children of God and become like God for we shall see him as he is. Matthew 5: 1-12a Jesus presents the very blueprint of the kingdom and its blessings. The beatitudes are presented by Jesus. We see here a glimpse of the wonders of God's holy city with the heavenly liturgy as we are challenged to live out the blueprint of the Kingdom. For in salvation, we shall come to see God as he is and become like him to eternal life. In the heavenly scene in Revelation we see a glimpse of the glory to come. This is truly the Festival of All Saints. November 2, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) There are many choices. The following will be used for the Masses: Wisdom 3: 1-9 The souls of the just are in God's hands and no torment shall touch them. 1 John 3: 1-2 We are God's children now. What we shall be later will be revealed to us for we shall see him as he is and we shall be like him. John 6: 37-40 Everyone who sees the son and believes in him will have eternal life. We are truly God's children and as such what we will become is in God's hands. We shall truly see him as he is and become like him. www.stpiuslombard.org Page 2 MINISTRY MUSINGS Thank You: A special thanks to all those volunteers who came forward to assist with the removal of the pews and to set up the temporary seating for Mass. It is spurring to see how big our worship space is when all the pews are removed. As always thanks to Jeff Werner and John Matyasik for their organization. The old pews will benefit others in their new home. Thank you to the following: A special thanks to Abraham for his work on the new tabernacle, using the symbols from the damaged side of the old tabernacle and replacing the back so that it can be used in the chapel. Ryan is working on the Guadalupe Shrine and Ed McCauley on the Holy Family Shrine. Marty Igoe is working on the electrical. Frank Stawiarski did pew repairs before they were removed. Our crew is working diligently keeping things going for Masses and services, Sallie, Jeff, Laura, and the others. More to follow. All Saints/All Souls: These special celebrations begin our Harvest Festival for the Month of November. As we mark the Celebration of All Saints, we move to the Faithful Departed and remember in our prayers all those who have gone before us as a sign of faith and rest in the peace of Christ. We especially remember those among our loved ones and those buried from Saint Pius X this past year. May they rest in peace. +Peace in Christ Father Tom November 2 is the traditional day of prayers called All Souls’ Day: The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed. We will have a Mass at 7 pm on Wednesday, November 2 in the Wagner Room for the families of those who have died this past year. Refreshments will be served immediately following Mass.
