Paulo........................................53 2.6.Cronograma de trabalho da segunda parte da pesquisa.................................54 Referências......................................................................................................................55 2 1.RELATÓRIO DAS ATIVIDADES 1.1 ATIVIDADES DESENVOLVIDAS O presente relatório apresenta o desenvolvimento dos primeiros seis meses de pesquisa, a qual tem como objetivo mostrar como foi possível o movimento riot grrrl, metamorfose da máquina de guerra (DELEUZE, 2008) punk, e como este movimento se constituiu, se modificou e para onde se redimensionou. Para tal, não perdendo de vista a forte relação entre o movimento punk -e suas vertentes- com a mídia, fiz um levantamento de todas as notícias relacionadas ao movimento riot grrrl a partir do acervo virtual de notícias do site do jornal Folha de S. Paulo. Utilizei essas notícias para perceber a relação entre eles e como a mídia construiu e veiculou um perfil das riot grrrls. Fazendo a leitura das notícias do acervo digital da Folha de S. Paulo, levantei algumas novas bibliografias para a pesquisa, dentre elas o livro Angry Women in Rock da cientista social Andrea Juno. Pesquisando um pouco mais sobre esse livro na internet, descobri que a autora havia publicado, anteriormente, o livro Angry Women tratando não de mulheres roqueiras como na primeira obra aqui citada, mas de nomes importantes do que se convencionou chamar de “cultura feminista”. Resolvi fazer a leitura desse livro antes, ao invés de partir direto para a leitura das “roqueiras zangadas”1, que se associa mais diretamente ao tema da minha pesquisa. Optei por essa leitura inicial a fim de tomar contato com práticas, discursos e enunciados que antecederam – reproduzidos, redimensionados ou mesmo refutados – os 1 O livro traz entrevistas com Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Phranc, Jarbone, Fanny, Candice, Kendra Smith, Naomi Yang, Kathleen Hanna, Bettina Richards, Lois e as bandas Tribe 8, 7 Years Bitch. 3 discursos e práticas do movimento riot grrrl. Pensando a análise desses discursos a partir de Michel Foucault “Suponho que em toda sociedade a produção do discurso é ao mesmo tempo controlada, selecionada, organizada e redistribuída por certo número de procedimentos que têm por função conjurar seus poderes e perigos, dominar seu acontecimento aleatório, esquivar sua pesada e temível materialidade” (FOUCAULT, 1996:8). O livro Angry Women é composto por uma série de entrevistas realizadas pela autora Andrea Juno com Kathy Acker, Susie Bright, Wanda Coleman, Valie Export, Karen Finley, Diamanda Galás, bell hooks, Holly Hughes, Lydia Lunch, Kerr & Malley, Linda Montano, Avital Ronell, Sapphire, Carolee Schneemann e Annie Sprinkle. Selecionei trechos de entrevistas com algumas dessas mulheres as quais penso haver procedências daquilo que depois veio a se constituir o movimento riot grrrl. Os livros Angry women in rock, Rock she wrote e Girls to the front, descobertos a partir do meu levantamento bibliográfico, serão analisados somente no próximo relatório devido a dificuldade de acesso a este material, indisponível para compra no mercado nacional. Nesta primeira parte da pesquisa foram utilizados alguns livros sobre o movimento punk - O que é punk de Antonio Bivar e Punk: anarquia planetária e a cena brasileira de Silvio Essinger; além de pesquisas sobre este movimento e o riot grrrl, sobre este último as dissertações Cultura juvenil feminista Riot Grrrl em São Paulo de Érica Isabel de Melo e O grito das garotas de Fernanda Rodrigues. Houve dificuldade em encontrar bibliografia específica sobre o riot grrrl. São poucas as pesquisas e não há livros nacionais publicados sobre o assunto, ademais, os livros publicados no exterior não possuem tradução nem comercialização em livrarias brasileiras. 4 Atrelada a essa leitura, analisei alguns materiais produzidos pelas próprias riot grrrls como fanzines2, webzines, letras de músicas e vídeos disponíveis na internet. Dentre os vídeos, destaco Bella Donnas – Meninas da Cena Punk desdobramento do trabalho de conclusão de curso de Anelise Paiva Csapo sobre o riot grrrl nacional e Don’t Need You – The Herstory of Riot Grrrl documentário de Kerri Koch que conta, através de depoimentos, a história do inicio do movimento riot grrrl em seu local de origem; as cidades de Olympia e Washington DC, Estados Unidos. Realizada essa leitura, feitas as seleções e analises do material, foi possível buscar as procedências e a constituição do movimento riot grrrl. Pretendo, neste relatório, mostrar esse processo e problematizar suas implicações políticas tendo em vista as resistências na sociedade de controle (DELEUZE,2010). Nestes meses de pesquisa fui a alguns eventos relacionados ao tema pesquisado. Show das bandas Dominatrix e Repentina, realizado no dia 09 de janeiro de 2011 na casa de noturna Outs, na rua Augusta. Mesa de debate Feminismo e Pornografia no Festival Pop Porn, realizada no dia 01 de junho de 2011 na Galeria Vermelho, foi formada com Elisa Gargiulo (mediadora), vocalista da banda Dominatrix e ativista feminista; Heloisa Passos, fotógrafa e cineasta; Bruna Vieira, atriz pornô e striper virtual; Penélope Nova, vj da MTV e ex-apresentadora de programas sobre sexualidade voltados ao público jovem e Tica Moreno, militante da Marcha Mundial das Mulheres, blogueira feminista. Contestação, comunicação e consumo: a cena Straight Edge na 2 “Literalmente, significa uma ‘revista de fã’. Pequenas publicações, feitas de modo artesanal e criadas por fãs de alguma banda, estilo musical ou até mesmo outras artes, como quadrinhos, cinema etc. Do seu surgimento, nos anos 70, até os tempos atuais, desenvolveram-se a ponto de termos fanzines com a mesma qualidade editorial e gráfica de revistas encontradas em bancas de jornal”. (O’HARA,2005:187) A importância dos fanzines para o movimento punk é assinalada por Moraes: “Tratava-se, na verdade, de problematizar esse cotidiano do qual falavam, de questionar esse ou aquele tipo de crítica, de se perguntar pelo melhor meio de resistir na atualidade, de repensar algumas atitudes e condutas, refletir sobre o que era afinal ser punk e o que se estava fazendo de si mesmo” (MORAES, 2008:3). 5 cidade de São Paulo, apresentação do resultado de pesquisa de mestrado de Denise Tangerino, realizada na PUC-SP dia 02 de junho de 2011. Slut Walk – Marcha das Vadias, realizada no dia 04 de junho de 2011 com concentração na Praça do Ciclista e disperção na Rua Augusta, enfrente ao Comedians. Verdurada, evento straight edge realizado no dia 05 de junho de 2011 na Ego Club, centro de São Paulo. Riot Grrrl – Hallohímen da festa gay Valentina realizada no dia 28 de outubro de 2011 na casa noturna Open Bar, no bairro de Pinheiros, com discotecagem da vocalista do Dominatrix, Elisa Gargiulo. Simpósio Paisagens com Mulheres de Autoridade realizado no dia 09 de novembro de 2011, na Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, o evento foi oferecido pelo Inanna (Núcleo Transdisciplinar de Investigações de Sexualidades, Gêneros e Diferenças), participaram do debate as professoras Carla Cristina Garcia, Marijane Lisboa e Norma Telles como mediadora. Acompanhei algumas mesas do VII Colóquio Internacional Michel Foucault O mesmo e outro. 50 anos da História da Loucura (1961-2011) também realizado na Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo nos dias 24, 25, 26 e 27 de outubro de 2011. Mais adiante retomarei algumas pontuações das exposições dos professores Peter Pál Pelbart, Margareth Rago, Carmen Soares, Tânia Navarro Swain, Denise Sant’Anna,

And I was there also the year ’90-’91. Something like that. For two years. And I met Molly Neuman in the dorms. She was my neighbor. And we later formed the band Bratmobile. But before we really had a band going, we actually started doing a fanzine. And even though I think we named the band Bratmobile as one of our earliest things, it just was a band in theory for a long time first. But we wanted to start being expressive about our opinions and having more of a voice for girls in music, or women in music, for ourselves, but also just for things that we were into.

    Popular Music and Society, Vol. 26, No. 1, 2003 “A Little Too Ironic”: The Appropriation and Packaging of Riot Grrrl Politics by Mainstream Female Musicians Kristen Schilt “RIOT GIRL IS: BECAUSE I believe with my wholeheartmindbody that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can, and will, change the world for real” (“Riot Grrrl Is” 44) “Girl power!” (Spice Girls) Introduction Female rock musicians have had difficulty making it in the predominantly white male rock world. Joanne Gottlieb and Gayle Wald note that women’s participation in rock music usually consists of bolstering male performance, in the roles of groupie, girlfriend, or back-up singer (257). Even in punk rock, women are often treated as a novelty by the music press and cultural critics. Male bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Damned achieve rock notoriety while their female counterparts, like the Slits and the Raincoats, sink into obscurity. However, 1995 saw an explosion in the music press about a new group of female musicians: the angry women. Hailed in popular magazines for blending feminism and rock music, Alanis Morissette topped the charts in 1995. Affectionately named the “screech queen” by Newsweek, Morissette combined angry, sexually graphic lyrics with catchy pop music (Chang 79). She was quickly followed by Tracy Bonham, Meredith Brooks, and Fiona Apple. Though they differed in musical style, this group of musicians embodied what it meant to be a woman expressing anger through rock music, according to the music press. Popular music magazines argued that musicians like Morissette were creating a whole new genre for female performers, one that allowed them to assert their ideas about feminism and sexual- ity.

    REFORMULATING THE RIOT GRRRL MOVEMENT: SPACE AND SISTERHOOD IN KATHLEEN HANNA’S LYRICS Soraya Alonso Alconada Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU) [email protected] Abstract Music has become a crucial domain to discuss issues such as gender, identities and equality. With this study I aim at carrying out a feminist critical discourse analysis of the lyrics by American singer and songwriter Kathleen Hanna (1968-), a pioneer within the underground punk culture and head figure of the Riot Grrrl movement. Covering relevant issues related to women’s conditions, Hanna’s lyrics put gender issues at the forefront and become a sig- nificant means to claim feminism in the underground. In this study I pay attention to the instances in which Hanna’s lyrics in Bikini Kill and Le Tigre exhibit a reading of sisterhood and space and by doing so, I will discuss women’s invisibility in underground music and broaden the social and cultural understanding of this music. The riot grrrl returns Dan Hancox – October 3, 2013 – The National Among the various waves of western feminism and rebellious youth subcultures since the 1960s, riot grrrl stands out as one of the most provocative, but also one of the most thoughtful and deliberative. Its roots were in the punk and new wave music and attitude of the late 1970s and 1980s, but it was not until the early 1990s that the term emerged from the punk scenes of Washington DC and the north-western region of the United 5 States, drawing on a growing youth feminist movement and the DIY youth culture embodied in homemade, cut-and-paste fanzines. References to “revolution girl style now” and “riot girls” mutated into the punk growl not of docile girls but “grrrls”. It was quickly and substantially misunderstood by the very culture they were rebelling against: as bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile began to attract attention beyond the punk underground, so did the American 10 media’s excitement about this “new big thing”, in the aftermath of grunge. This excitement quickly manifested itself in a tendency to generalise, fetishise and trivialise the things the riot grrrls were singing about, and conveying through their broader aesthetics: in fanzines, onstage, or otherwise. “There were,” Sharon Cheslow said in the 11-part Riot Grrrl Retrospective documentary, “a lot of very important ideas that I think the mainstream media couldn’t handle, so it was easier to focus on the fact that these were girls who 15 were wearing barrettes in their hair or writing ‘slut’ on their stomach.” Covering issues like misogyny, abuse and patriarchy were considered too contentious or complex for the American mainstream, and instead, the movement was patronised in a way which confirmed much of their original anger.

Stevens Copyright by Lindsay Marie Bernhagen 2013 Abstract This dissertation centers on the role of musical experience in the production and maintenance of intimate, interpersonal relationships. Music acquires meaning in its ability to enable and amplify personal relationships among participants who share musical experience—not only through the semiotic decoding of lyrics and musical sounds that characterizes much music scholarship. Because there is scant language available for describing musical experience without reference to non-sonic elements such as lyrics, communal identity, or performers’ personae, this research relies on textual and ethnographic methods to examine how human experiences of musical sound are understood via racialized and gendered discourses of embodiment, intimacy, pleasure, and danger. Specifically, this project consists of textual analyses of music censorship discourse and ethnographic analyses of female musicians and listeners who seek out shared musical experiences in explicitly gendered contexts including a feminist punk movement, a girls’ rock music camp, and a long-standing women’s music festival. The introductory chapter offers an overview of the scholarship and theory that has influenced this project and sets up the theoretical framework I have developed through my own research. To establish the stakes of this project, the second chapter focuses on discourses of musical danger to reveal ii a persistent and anxious fascination with music’s relationship to the body and intimacy in the American imagination.

    Race and Riot Grrrl: A Retrospective What is Riot Grrrl? - Riot Grrrl is an international underground feminist movement (mainly youth oriented) that initially emerged from the West Coast American alternative and punk music scenes. - It began in Olympia, Washington and was most active between 1989 and 1997. - The movement produced bands like Heavens to Betsy, Bratmobile and Bikini Kill. Bikini Kill’s lead singer, Kathleen Hanna, is typically thought of as being the founder and voice of the movement though she would later claim she only played a small part. - Riot Grrrl was heavily influenced by the Queercore scene (another offshoot of punk whose lyrics explored themes of prejudice against the LGBT community). Riot Grrrl was characterized by its similarly aggressive style and overtly political/controversial lyrics. - Riot Grrrls were performers as well as activists and publishers. They held regular meetings and national conferences similar to the feminist discussion and support groups of the 1960s and 1970s that allowed women to meet and discuss music as well as their experiences of sexism, body image and identity. - The movement also used zines (or small D.I.Y. magazines) as its primary method of communication. Thousands of young women began to produce personal and political zines with explicitly feminist themes, which allowed Riot Grrrl to spread its message without the use of mainstream media.
