As with any emerging professional discipline, sport management underwent several stages of evolution and growth to blossom into its current professionalized state. Generally, stages can be categorized from 1957 to 1966 (initial development), 1967 to 1987 (initial growth), 1988 to 2000 (unmonitored development), 2001 to 2007 (nurtured expansion), and 2008 to present (program assessment and professionalization) (Gillentine, 2012). The first stage is one that began with a letter written in 1957 from Walter O’Malley (Brooklyn Dodgers professional baseball team in the United States) to an aspiring educator, James Mason, about the need for a graduate program in sport management.

The experiences narrated are related to a specific course taught in the Fall of 2016 at Western University and to two exhibitions that took place during that time in London, TransAMERICAS: A Sign, a Situation, a Concept at Museum London and Mountains & Rivers Without End at the Artlab Gallery of the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre at Western University. It is furthermore informed by the experience of teaching Latin American visual culture to non-art history students in Spanish for many years. ORIGINAL RESEARCH Results From Venezuela’s 2016 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth Marianella Herrera-Cuenca, Betty Méndez-Perez, Vanessa Castro Morales, Joana Martín-Rojo, Bianca Tristan, Amilid Torín Bandy, Maritza Landaeta-Jiménez, Coromoto Macías-Tomei, and Mercedes López-Blanco Background: The Venezuelan Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth is the first assessment of information related to physical activity in Venezuela. It provides a compilation of existing information throughout the country and assesses how well it is doing at promoting opportunities for children and youth. The aim of this article is to summarize the information available. Methods: Thirteen physical activity indicators were graded by a committee of experts using letters A to F (A, the highest, to F, the lowest) based on national surveys, peer review studies, and policy documents. Results: Some indicators report incomplete information or a lack of data. Overweight and Obesity were classified as A; Body Composition and Nongovernmental Organization Policies as B; Municipal Level Policies as C; and Overall Physical Activity Levels and National Level Policies as D. Conclusions: 63% of children and youth have low physical activity levels. Venezuela needs to undergo a process of articula- tion between the several existing initiatives, and for said purposes, political will and a methodological effort is required. Invest- ments, infrastructure, and opportunities will be more equal for all children and youth if more cooperation between institutions is developed and communication strategies are applied.

This conflict is under- stood as antagonism where the political opponent is seen as an enemy in- stead of a more equal adversary. In Venezuela, private media were powerful economic and political actors before Chávez’s era due to clientelistic tradi- tion. President Chávez questioned the neoliberal measures taken by previous governments and started to apply his politics of the “socialism of 21st centu- ry” in a manner that shaped his government’s media policies. Several private media outlets disagreed with his drastic measures and took them as an at- tack. Confrontation developed between the private media and state media sectors. This polarized situation offers an excellent case study to focus on the con- struction of hegemonies in a populist context, and the media’s role in it be- cause the society was penetrated by politics.
