In Wuthering Heights, the place of Wuthering Heights and the residents are the representatives of nature, while the place of Thrushcross Grange and the residents are the spokesmen of civilization. The history of the chang- ing relationship between the human beings and the nature is reflected in the relationships of the main characters in Wuthering Heights. Long ago the human beings lived in awe of the nature and admired it and then they exploited the nature excessively. At last they return to respect the nature and form a harmonious relationship between the human beings and the nature under the guid- ance of the eco-ethic. With the deterioration of the environment, the relationship between the human beings and the nature reflected in Wuthering Heights drives the modern people to think deeply. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

David McCooey Professor of Writing and Literature, Deakin University Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love (1985) was the first album I heard on CD. With its use of the Fairlight CMI (a digital synthesizer/sampler workstation), digital reverb, and drum machines, it was perhaps eminently suitable for the CD format. But under its shiny digital sound, Hounds of Love was very much an LP, as seen in its two-part structure. Side one, Hounds of Love, covers themes characteristic of Bush: intimacy and its limits (Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) and The Big Sky); familial love (albeit darkly articulated in Mother Stands for Comfort); and the intensity and ambivalence of sexual desire (Hounds of Love). Meanwhile, side two comprises of The Ninth Wave, a song cycle about a woman who has fallen into the sea at night, with only the “little light” of her life jacket to guide her. -

John Mullen, Université de Rouen Normandie, Equipe ERIAC One of the most important jobs of the historian is to find useful and interesting questions about the past, and the debate about the 1970s has partly been a question of deciding which questions are important. The questions, of course, are not neutral, which is why those numerous commentators for whom the key question is “Did the British people become ungovernable in the 1970s?” might do well to balance this interrogation with other equally non-neutral questions, such as, perhaps, “Did the British elites become unbearable in the 1970s?” My reflection shows, it is true, a preoccupation with “history from below”, but this is the approach most suited to the study of popular music history. -

Signed: Name of student: Student number: Severens 2 Abstract Kate Bush remains one of the most successful and original British female music artists and is often perceived as a female pioneer. This thesis analyses a selection of her earlier work in order to establish how she represents issues of gender and sexuality in her lyrics and performances. Her work is evaluated through the lens of two feminist theories: écriture feminine and gender performativity. Écriture féminine is employed to determine how Bush writes and reclaims female sexuality, while gender performativity subsequently shows how she transcends her position as a woman by taking on and representing characters of the opposite gender. This thesis argues that Bush constructs narratives in her lyrics to represent experiences which transcend the boundaries of binary gender and challenge social sexual norms. Evaluate the use of forces, structure and tonality in ‘Hounds of Love’ by Kate Bush Kate Bush is a British singer and composer who released the album ‘Hounds of Love’ in 1985. The style which she sang and wrote music was very unique and avant-garde, providing a distinctive concept with her music compared to other musicians around the same time. Most of Kate’s works were inspired by novels and historical sources as well as being influenced by genres such as folk, electronic and classical music which allowed her to create something diverse. In this essay, I will be exploring the ways that Kate Bush created the unique style that she was known for by evaluating the uses of instrumentation, structure and tonality in the songs ‘Cloud busting’, ‘And Dream of Sheep’ and ‘Under Ice’ t o understand how she achieved a sense of individuality and broke new ground. One of the most prominent features of Kate Bush’s works was the choice of instrumentation that she used. Instead of focusing on the standard pop instrumentation, she experimented with new technological advances and also instruments associated with different genres and styles. In the song ‘Cloudbusting’, a string sextet provides the main accompaniment and was not considered as a typical instrument in the pop genre, this was due mainly due to its inability to be performed live. Another example of a song which uses strings as a main accompaniment is ‘Eleanor Rigby’ by the Beatles, who were also know to have broken new ground due to their instrumentation choices which were not able to support a live performance. -

188 Nineteenth-Century Fiction Wuthering Heights AND THE UNFORGIVABLE SIN The two dreams Lockwood experiences early in Wuthering Heights-the first of a visit to Gimmerton Kirk, and the second of a visit from the ghost-child Catherine-have recently received critical attention from Ruth M. Adams and Edgar Shannon.' Of the two interpretations Shannon's seems the most convincing in that it offers the only plausible source for the Biblical allusion in the first dream; but in discussing the relationship of the dream sermon and its title to the tragedy of Heathcliff and Catherine, Shannon ignores significant aspects of the dream itself, and conse- quently the value of his interpretation seems impaired somewhat, like Miss Adams's, by its own ingenuity. The preacher that Lockwood hears in the first dream is Jabes Branderham, and the sermon is entitled "Seventy Times Seven and the First of the Seventy-first."Shannon identifies the sermon's text as Matt. 18: 21-22. In this passage Peter asks Jesus, "Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times?" and Jesus answers, "I say not unto thee Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven." "The First of the Seventy-first," then, Shannon asserts, "advances the idea of an unpardonable sin beyond the ordinary scale of human wrongs." The subsequent nightmare, he continues, connects this idea with Catherine, who appears as an outcast, and we are asked to believe that it is she who has committed the unforgivable sin by marrying Edgar and denying the "natural and elemental affinity" inherent in her love for Heathcliff. -
