This survey was mainly focused on epiphytic lichens, but some collections were carried out also on dead wood. Eighty-four species, including two non lichenized fungi, were found. The ecology of the species reflects the features of the forest habitat, most of them being linked to acidic substrates, preferring intermediate and well-lit conditions, intermediate moisture conditions, and avoiding eutrophication. Keywords: coniferous forests, dead wood-dwelling lichens, epiphytic lichens, forest management 1 Introduction Lichens are a symbiotic association of a fungus with a photosynthetic partner, which is either a green alga or cyanobacterium. They are a species rich component of the forest biota, occurring on many substrates including trees, bare rocks and exposed soil surfaces. Epiphytic lichens growing on tree trunks and branches play an important role in the forest ecosystem functioning. They affect water-cycling by retaining precipitation in the canopy, and cyanobacterial lichens influence nutrient cycling by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. They are a crucial component in forest food-webs, increasing microhabitat complexity and diversity of forest invertebrate fauna, which in turn serves as food for a variety of passerine bird species. Along with climate and air pollution, forest management is a key direct control of epiphytic lichen diversity in forest ecosystems (JOHANSSON 2008, ELLIS 2012, NASCIMBENE et al. 2013). Diversity of epiphytes is related with forest structure and dynamics, and several environmental factors relevant to their dispersal, establishment, and maintenance are affected by forest management. The studies on lichen diversity clearly demonstrate dramatic losses of species caused by forest management in European temperate and boreal forests. The main negative effects of forestry are related with lack of old trees, short rotation cycles, excessive canopy cover, or excessive exposure to direct light in the final part of the rotation cycle, lack of substrate particularly for dead-wood dwelling species, decrease of structural diversity, lack of forest continuity, and forest fragmentation. 5 J. NASCIMBENE: The epiphytic lichen flora of “Großer Zirmboden”, Latemar, South Tyrol In this framework, a research project started in 2011 in South Tyrol to investigate the effect of climatic and management-related factors on the distribution of epiphytic lichens in mountain forests (NASCIMBENE et al. 2012). In particular, this study summarizes the results of a lichen floristic survey carried out in a 4 ha forest plot as a preliminary phase of a research on the small scale distribution patterns of some selected species. This floristic information was used to select appropriate species with contrasting dispersal strategies, growth forms and ecological requirements (ACKERMANN 2012) to retrieve information on the relative importance of habitat features and dispersal dynamics in determining the distribution of epiphytic lichens within forests. 2 Materials and methods 2.1 Study area The study site is a 4-ha permanent plot located on the Western side of the Latemar massif in the Western

No. 10*54-^ CLASS N O j)gSS C1657<(o TftQ Abstract Habitat restoration is an important tool in reducing the current decline in biodiversity. To determine the success of restoration, ecologists have previously focused on species richness or on the presence of rare species; little is known of species interactions. This study examines both the potential of restored landfill sites to support pollinating insects and how flower-insect interactions can be used in determining successful restoration. These are important attributes of ecosystem function. Standard belt transects were used to record flowering insect pollinated plants and flower-visiting insects on nine paired restored landfill and reference nature sites, in the broader Northamptonshire region (UK). Over the duration of this study, an area of 25,000m2 was surveyed for floral characteristics and approximately 138,000 floral units were counted from c)8 plant species. A total of 201 flower visitor surveys were performed, with 942 flower-visiting insect samples taken. Flowering plant species richness and abundance of floral resources on restored landfill sites were not found to be significantly different from those on reference sites and the flower-visiting insect assemblages were similar in terms of species-richness and abundance. Interaction structures were examined and whilst the plant-insect assemblages had few species in common, both showed similar levels of nestedness and connectance.

In the field these specimens were named Pachyprotasis nigronotata, but already there it was noted that the latter species in Europe has a rather different appearance in coloration. Subsequently we noted that the species previously named nigronotata in Japan is hitherto undescribed.

Survey and Manage Species Persistence Evaluation Establishment of the 95-foot wide construction corridor and TEWAs would likely remove individuals of H. caeruleus and modify microclimate conditions around individuals that are not removed. The removal of forests and host trees and disturbance to soil could negatively affect H. caeruleus in adjacent areas by removing its habitat, disturbing the roots of host trees, and affecting its mycorrhizal association with the trees, potentially affecting site persistence. Restored portions of the corridor and TEWAs would be dominated by early seral vegetation for approximately 30 years, which would result in long-term changes to habitat conditions. A 30-foot wide portion of the corridor would be maintained in low-growing vegetation for pipeline maintenance and would not provide habitat for the species during the life of the project. Hygrophorus caeruleus is not likely to persist at one of the sites in the project area because of the extent of impacts and the proximity of the recorded observation to the corridor. Hygrophorus caeruleus is likely to persist at the remaining three sites in the project area (MP 168.8 and MP 172.4 (north), and MP 172.5-172.7) because the majority of observations within the sites are more than 90 feet from the corridor, where direct effects are not anticipated and indirect effects are unlikely. The site at MP 168.8 is in a forested area on an east-facing slope, and a paved road occurs through the southeast part of the site. Four out of five observations are more than 90 feet southwest of the corridor and are not likely to be directly or indirectly affected by the PCGP Project based on the distance from the corridor, extent of forests surrounding the observations, and proximity to an existing open corridor (the road), indicating the species is likely resilient to edge- related effects at the site.

Academic Editor: Reinhard Länger Received: 18 August 2015; Accepted: 27 May 2016; Published: 27 May 2016 Abstract: The value of root and rhizome anatomy for the taxonomic characterisation of 59 species classified into 34 genera and 12 subtribes from the Asteraceae tribes Cardueae and Cichorieae was assessed. In addition, the evolutionary history of anatomical characters was reconstructed using a nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence-based phylogeny of the Cichorieae. Taxa were selected with a focus on pharmaceutically relevant species. A binary decision tree was constructed and discriminant function analyses were performed to extract taxonomically relevant anatomical characters and to infer the separability of infratribal taxa, respectively. The binary decision tree distinguished 33 species and two subspecies, but only five of the genera (sampled for at least two species) by a unique combination of hierarchically arranged characters. Accessions were discriminated—except for one sample worthy of discussion—according to their subtribal affiliation in the discriminant function analyses (DFA). However, constantly expressed subtribe-specific characters were almost missing and even in combination, did not discriminate the subtribes.

Because it is positioned on the ecotone between tundra and boreal forest, the Churchill area is a strategic locality for the analysis of shifts in faunal composition. This fact has motivated the effort to develop a comprehensive biodiversity inventory for the Churchill region by coupling DNA barcoding with morphological studies. The present study represents one element of this effort; it focuses on analysis of the spider fauna at Churchill. Results: 198 species were detected among 2704 spiders analyzed, tripling the count for the Churchill region. Estimates of overall diversity suggest that another 10–20 species await detection. Most species displayed little intraspecific sequence variation (maximum <1%) in the barcode region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, but four species showed considerably higher values (maximum = 4.1-6.2%), suggesting cryptic species. All recognized species possessed a distinct haplotype array at COI with nearest-neighbour interspecific distances averaging 8.57%. Three species new to Canada were detected: Robertus lyrifer (Theridiidae), Baryphyma trifrons (Linyphiidae), and Satilatlas monticola (Linyphiidae). The first two species may represent human-mediated introductions linked to the port in Churchill, but the other species represents a range extension from the USA.
