Democracy relies on an informed citizenry to make good decisions, and this relies on information access. In the digital era, new technologies give us greater access to knowledge and allow us to be more informed participants in society. Information professionals possess an unparalleled ability to understand, teach, and navigate through the constant flow of data and information. Libraries have always been considered places of universal knowledge. Nowadays, they play a major role in information access by offering citizens tools and resources. BOBCATSSS 2016, thanks to the 100 proposals received, from which with the great help of our reviewers we selected 40 papers, 16 posters, 16 workshops to be presented at the conference, was trying to question the role of the library as a social and political place: How open is it? How welcoming? What is its part in spreading democracy and squaring inequalities? By what means? How do libraries conceive their political model? Those 72 contributions, which full texts and abstracts you can find in this e-book, explores the main theme through several key topics: The Role of Libraries in Democratic Cultures, Intellectual Freedom and Censorship, Libraries, Open Access and Open Data and Protecting Privacy. The role of libraries in democratic cultures: As institutions of public service, libraries provide citizens access to culture and information, but how can libraries play a role in providing tools and opportunities for citizens to realize their citizenship fully and to take active parts in society and in democracy? Intellectual freedom and censorship: Democracy is closely tied to intellectual freedom. However, this concept is still the subject of debate. What responsibility do information professionals have in defending intellectual freedom? What can they do to support and promote individuals’ rights to access, explore, consider, share and express ideas? Libraries, open access and open data: In a knowledge-based society, open access conveys the idea of sharing and promoting knowledge without boundaries. This begs the questions: What are the ways to implement freedom of access? How to sustain new economic models? How can libraries make the most of open access resources and promote free access? 3 Protecting Privacy: The privacy has become one of the main issues in the digital society as a human right. How to strike a balance between open access and privacy? How should privacy concerns be handled by information professionals? How can they educate citizens about issues related to privacy? What’s their role in protecting users’ information? Every year, BOBCATSSS Conference is organized by students of library and information science from at least two universities. Thanks to the 2016’s teams, from Enssib (Lyon-France), Université Paris Descartes (Paris-France) and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (Knoxville,Tennessee -USA), for organizing this event where such important topics were studied and analyzed by students, teachers and professionals from all over the world. You can either navigate through this collection by type of document, by theme or following the symposium order. Es präsentiert zunächst eine breite theoretische Konzeptualisierung der Selbstzensur und konzentriert sich dann auf seine mediale Praxis. Als Fallstudie wurde die Darstellung des Zweiten Libanonkrieges in den israelischen Medien untersucht. Um Selbstzensur als einen der Gründe für die Dominanz hegemonialer Erzählungen in den Medien zu untersuchen, führten die Autoren Inhaltsanalysen und Tiefeninterviews mit ehemaligen und aktuellen Journalisten durch. Die Ergebnisse der Analysen zeigen, dass israelische Journalisten die Selbstzensur weitverbreitet einsetzen, ihre Motivation, sie zu praktizieren, und die Auswirkungen ihrer Anwendung auf die Gesellschaft. Abstract: This article describes the characteristics of self-censorship in general, specifically in mass media, with regard to narratives of political violence, including motivations for and effects of practicing self-censorship. It first presents a broad theoretical conceptualization of self-censorship, and then focuses on its practice in media. The case study examined the representation of The Second Lebanon War in the Israeli national media. The authors carried out content analysis and in-depth interviews with former and current journalists in order to investigate one of the reasons for the dominance of the hegemonic narrative in the media – namely, self-censorship. Indeed, the analysis revealed widespread use of self-censorship by Israeli journalists, their motivations for practicing it, and the effects of its use on the society.

It's name derived from Israeli Defense Minister Pinhas Lavon, though it is also referred to as " Esek HaBish" or "The Mishap". Revolving around nearly a dozen young Egyptian Jews who agreed to spy for Israel against their home country, the affair taps into a story of idealism and self-sacrifice as well as abandonment and an unwillingness to take responsibility. Due to strict censorship in Israel in the early 1950's, few knew that in the year 1954 Israeli underground cells that had been operating in Egypt were uncovered by the Egyptian police. A number of young Jews were arrested and forced to undergo a show trial. Two of them - Yosef Carmon and Max Binnet - committed suicide in prison due to the brutal interrogation methods of the Egyptian police. Two more - Dr. Moshe Marzouk of Cairo and Shmuel Azar of Alexandria - were sentenced to death and hanged in a Cairo prison. Israel glorified them as martyrs. Their memory was sanctified. Neighborhoods and gardens were named after them in Israel, as were dozens of children born in the year 1955. At the same time it was not publicly conceded that they died in the service of Israel.

Abstract Discussing, defining and engaging with ‘terrorism’ has long been limited to the narrowly framed situations in which parties to an asymmetric conflict resort to the use of force and to the legitimacy they have in doing so. The problem with the limited understanding of ‘terrorism’ and ‘counterterrorism’ as ‘facts of objective reality’ is the lack of attention to the role of the extreme asymmetry of power in conflicts involving ‘terrorism’ that does not lend itself to analysis readily. This thesis introduces a new theoretical concept, the Terrorism Complex that signifies the complexity of power/knowledge relations and the complexity of power/knowledge practices that operate on a discursive and non-discursive level through time and are affected by the mechanisms of power that stem from the asymmetry of power between the actors involved in a conflict. The research into the Terrorism Complex involves an ontological and epistemological widening of the research focus to account for these effects of the interplay between power and knowledge on the production, construction and perception of ‘terrorism’.

Two months of intense fighting with Hamas (“Operation Protective Edge”) required daily and even hourly communication between local media and censors, supervising any military related news prior to publication. Lines were often busy, temperatures high physically and emotionally, and while waiting to appeal yet another publication ban I suddenly realized: the music I kept listening to, but never really noticed before, was surprisingly a popular anti-war song from the nineties. 1 "You promised peace... you promised spring... you promised to keep promises"0F , sang the band just before the officer on duty picked up the phone to discuss war casualties. Whether it was deliberate criticism, an ironic prank or just a random choice – this anecdote illustrates Israel’s biggest challenge and source of growing tensions: liberal values, lifestyle and self-image in face of an ongoing violent conflict and military occupation with no clear solution in sight. A challenge in which government’s control over the media plays a massive role and checks and balances between security needs and freedom of the press are becoming extremely fragile.
