Fuller DARN' SIA14 EDITOR When San Jose State University football coach Dave Baldwin looked at the defensive stet sheet after Saturday night's match-up against Stanford, he was in for a surprise. The Spartans' opponents again gained close to 600 yards of net offense while dou- bling their total number of first downs and offensive plays. Yet, unlike last week's blowout loss at Nebraska, it was SJSU that dished out the knock out punch in a 40-27 victory against the Cardinal in front of crowd of more than 41,000, the largest since 1993. "I guess we gave up a lot of yards on defense, but we kept them out of the end zone at the right time and made big plays," Baldwin said. "We are a young defense, and we know we are going to grow. We were attacked by Nebraska's run and by the throw here." "Going up the stairs, it was completely dark in the stairway," said freshman Alice Tsai. Although Tsai lives in Moulder Hall and was in class when the outage began, she and her friends trekked up the stairs in Joe West to visit another friend. "It was hard," Tsai said. "In the dark, we were trying to look for the keyhole to open the stair door. It was completely dark and scary." Castillo agreed. "It's a scary situation," he said. He added that residents are requested to bring a flashlight prior to moving in for emergencies such as this. To keep fear at a minimum in these situations, in addition to the emergency lighting system, Richardson said that each hall performs safety and security checks. "It was hard. They also make sure safety lights are functioning properly. To be easily accessible, resident directors communicate by radio in emergencies. Because the emergency lighting system is only operational for a maximum of four hours, Richardson said there is a backup plan for longer outages. "We'll bring in generators that will functionalize lights," Richardson said. "Students won't be able to blast their stereo, but we're only concerned with safety." Richardson also said that after power has been restored, his first concern is to make sure the fire systems are reading cor- rectly in case they may not have reset themselves properly. "We try to encourage students to remain calm, especially if it happens at night," Richardson said. Sophomore Ryan Pearson, who also lived in the Residence Halls last year, said he was used to the power outages. "It happened once before in Markham," Pearson said. "I got bored. I couldn't play my video games anymore."
