Kyseistä romaania on tutkittu verraten vähän, vaikka eri tutkijat ovat päätyneet mitä erilaisimpiin tulkintoihin sen merkityksistä. Itse käsittelen sitä kanadalaisena, postkolonialistisena romaanina, jonka tärkeimmäksi teemaksi nousee selviytyminen. Lähtökohta tälle tulkinnalle on Margaret Atwoodin kirja Survival , josta on mahdollista löytää paljon yhtymiskohtia Findleyn romaaniin ja jonka sidon postkolonialistiseen käsitykseen itsestä ja toisesta. Keskeisimmät tutkimuskysymykseni ovat miksi selviytyä, miten selviytyä ja mitä tapahtuu selviytymisen jälkeen. Näiden kysymysten pohjalta pohdin tarinaa myös kolonialistisen ja postkolonialistisen ajan allegoriana. Keskityn tutkimuksessani ensin henkilöihin ja olosuhteisiin, jotka luovat uhreja ja pakottavat selviytymään, minkä jälkeen käsittelen yksittäisiä hahmoja erilaisina uhreina. Lopuksi pohdin selviytymistä ajan ja maailman, tai yhteiskunnan, kannalta pyrkien sitomaan Findleyn romaanin laajempaan, postkolonialistiseen viitekehykseen.

K M.A English Literature NGM College Pollachi. Abstract World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War, or the War to End All Wars, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. Troops from Canada played a prominent part in World War One. Canada was part of the British Empire in 1914. As a result of this, when Great Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914, Canada was automatically at war. The causes of World War One are complicated. No wonder so many of Canada's great writers, from Timothy Findley to Anne Michaels, have been driven to write about the impact of war on our individual psyches and collective society. Findley’s The Wars is about the experiences of a young Canadian officer, Robert Ross in World War I. He had explored the happenings take place in the battle field. He also shows that the war urged the outer conflicts as well as inner conflicts in the minds of people. The protagonist’s loss of innocence in the novel gives a clear picture of the frustrated minds in the society which existing aftermath of the war. This paper involves discovering how the world war one created impact on the society. Key words: wars, violence, isolation, death, sexuality, gas attack, animals and frustration.

    Myths of Authority in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Timothy Findley’s Headhunter Victor Kennedy Pedagoska Fakulteta Univerza v Mariboru 2000 Maribor, Slovenia Abstract Conrad’s Kurtz is often seen as the personification of the “darkness” Marlow discovers, a twentieth century icon of evil that has been used again and again, as in Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Kurtz’s evil is his extreme authoritarianism in the name of civilization and “progress,” an evil particularly apt to the century that produced Hitler and Stalin. This view of Kurtz is rather simplistic, however, since Conrad uses him in a complex and ironic way: Marlow, and the reader, are both attracted and repelled by Kurtz. The danger resides in what Frank Kermode defined as the difference between myth and fiction: “Myth operates within the diagrams of ritual, which presupposes total and adequate explanations of things as they are and were; it is a sequence of radically unchangeable gestures. Fictions are for finding out, and they change as the needs of sense-making change.” It is tempting to read Kurtz and his later incarnations as mythical figures of internal evil, as Dracula is a mythical figure of external evil. Heart of Darkness is not, however, a “total and adequate explanation of things as they are,” but a “fiction. for finding out,” and the best modern versions of Kurtz follow this model. Timothy Findley is a Canadian novelist whose Headhunter (1993) is a postmodern parody of Heart of Darkness; the title is a pun on psychiatrists, a twist on the idiom “head shrinker,” and an allusion to the heads mounted on poles surrounding Kurtz’s compound in Heart of Darkness.

Edward Turner (1926- By Sherrill Grace 2006), Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, here are several people I regret not meeting during the Medical Director of the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, and Tresearch for my biography of Timothy Findley—Alec Director of METFORS. Ed, as Findley and other friends Guinness, an early mentor; Thornton Wilder, who advised called him, worked with Tiff for years, believed in him and him to “pay attention” if he wished to become a writer; his bolstered his faith in himself as a gifted writer and a gay man. ex-wife Janet Reid, with whom his marriage failed; Margaret Findley met regularly with Turner for over 30 years, and Laurence, who he loved and greatly admired; and his life- it is safe to say that the two men came to know each other (continued) well. Keshen From the earliest days of English-language Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television (CBC-TV), the military has been regularly featured on the news, public affairs, documentary, and drama programs. Little has been done to study these programs, despite calls for more research and many decades of work on the methods for the historical analysis of television. In addressing this gap, this thesis explores: how media representations of the military on CBC-TV (commemorative, history, public affairs and news programs) changed over time; what accounted for those changes; what they revealed about CBC-TV; and what they suggested about the way the military and its relationship with CBC-TV evolved. Through a material culture analysis of 245 programs/series about the Canadian military, veterans and defence issues that aired on CBC-TV over a 40-year period, beginning with its establishment in 1952, this thesis argues that the conditions surrounding each production were affected by a variety of factors, namely: (1) technology; (2) foreign broadcasters; (3) foreign sources of news; (4) the influence

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Award-winning Canadian writer Timothy Findley produced works in a number of genres, including plays, novels, and short stories. While his works are impossible to pigeon-hole, they often examine the nature of power in society and the struggle of people to understand and achieve what is right. Timothy Irving Frederick Findley--"Tiff" to his friends--was born into a prosperous Toronto family on October 30, 1930 and grew up in the fashionable Rosedale section of the city. His father was the first person outside of the founding families to head the Massey-Ferguson company. His mother's family had a piano factory. Although Findley grew up in a privileged environment, his childhood was far from happy. Under the influence of alcohol his father frequently terrorized Findley's mother and older brother. Findley himself generally escaped his wrath, but, in the words of journalist Alec Scott, "vicarious scar tissue developed nonetheless" in the sensitive young boy. Findley suffered from poor health as a child. He nearly died of pneumonia in his second year, and shortly thereafter he was confined to an oxygen tent due to complications of an ear infection. Findley was a bookish youth who loved creating his own worlds of make-believe. He was not, however, a particularly avid student. He dropped out of high school at the age of sixteen in order to study ballet. A fused disc put an end to Findley's hopes of a career in dance, and he turned to acting.

REPRESENTATIONS OF GAY MEN IN CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN THEATRE Tony Berto Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Professor Ann Wilson This study acknowledges that historical antipathies towards gay men have marginalised their theatrical representation in the past. However, over the last century a change has occurred in the social location of gay men in Canada (from being marginalised to being included). Given these changes, questions arise as to whether staged representations of gay men are still marginalised today. Given antipathies towards homosexuality and homophobia may contribute to the how theatres determine the riskiness of productions, my investigation sought a correlation between financial risk in theatrical production and the marginalisation of gay representations on stage. Furthermore, given that gay sex itself, and its representation on stage, have been theorised as loci of antipathies to gayness, I investigate the relationship between the visibility and overtness of gay sex in a given play and the production of that play’s proximity to the mainstream. The study located four plays from across the spectrum of production conditions (from high to low financial risk) in BC. Analysis of these four plays shows general trends, not only in the plays’ constructions but also in the material conditions of their productions that indicate that gay representations become more overt, visible and sexually explicit when less financial risk was at stake.

    2011 Winter Session (2011-2012 Academic Year) ENGL 545E: Studies in Canadian Literature (3 credits) Instructor: Sherrill Grace Section: 005 Term: 2 From Autobiography to Apocalyptic Fable: The Fiction, Drama, and Non-Fiction of Timothy Findley Course Description: Findley (1933-2002) is one of the most important literary figures of post-WWII culture in Canada. He began his career as an actor and went on to write over 10 novels, many plays, short stories, autobiographies, scripts and essays, and he intervened in some of the most significant cultural debates of late 20th century life—in Canada and internationally. In his fiction, non-fiction, and plays, he often stretched the limits of narrative and dramatic conventions in fascinating ways. His plays are among leading examples of post-modern Canadian drama, and they explore timeless questions of gender, identity, history, and performance. In this seminar we will examine representative examples of his work against the background of Canadian literary and theatrical developments during the last decades of the 20th century to explore, not only the texts themselves, but also the ways in which he established new ‘norms’ and broke new ground for postmodern narratives. Among the issues we will address are: the impact of The Wars on writing about war in Canada; the ethics of fiction and postmodern narrative strategies; the challenges presented to History by Findley’s historiographic aesthetics in his plays and novels; the function of memory and the process of autobiographical constructions of identity; and the role of the writer as public intellectual (eg. re the protests against and Senate inquiry into the film, The Valour and the Horror).
