Kyseistä romaania on tutkittu verraten vähän, vaikka eri tutkijat ovat päätyneet mitä erilaisimpiin tulkintoihin sen merkityksistä. Itse käsittelen sitä kanadalaisena, postkolonialistisena romaanina, jonka tärkeimmäksi teemaksi nousee selviytyminen. Lähtökohta tälle tulkinnalle on Margaret Atwoodin kirja Survival , josta on mahdollista löytää paljon yhtymiskohtia Findleyn romaaniin ja jonka sidon postkolonialistiseen käsitykseen itsestä ja toisesta. Keskeisimmät tutkimuskysymykseni ovat miksi selviytyä, miten selviytyä ja mitä tapahtuu selviytymisen jälkeen. Näiden kysymysten pohjalta pohdin tarinaa myös kolonialistisen ja postkolonialistisen ajan allegoriana. Keskityn tutkimuksessani ensin henkilöihin ja olosuhteisiin, jotka luovat uhreja ja pakottavat selviytymään, minkä jälkeen käsittelen yksittäisiä hahmoja erilaisina uhreina. Lopuksi pohdin selviytymistä ajan ja maailman, tai yhteiskunnan, kannalta pyrkien sitomaan Findleyn romaanin laajempaan, postkolonialistiseen viitekehykseen. -

Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize. This morning he's here to talk about a book of his own. The book is Gr e e n Grass, Running Water. I 've already raved about it today. Thomas King is in our Calgary studio. M o r n in g. τ κ Morning. ρ G Now, yo u wouldn't have heard my opening remarks because it's still too—we haven't crossed into Alberta yet, but boy, I felt like I was talking cover blurb stuff. I love this book. τ κ Oh, wonderful! ρ G Well, who doesn't? I've never seen such reviews, either! τ κ Well, they've been okay so far. I tend to be pragmatic about those things and just sort of hold my breath, bu t so far the reviews have been good. ρ G I have to confess it took me a little while to slide into it, you know, I was warmed up and I said, "Oh no, t h is is another on e—it'll be too compli cated for me—too abstruse and too magical"—and then all of a sudden I sort of glided in and I found myself laughing and having a wonderful time. τ κ Good, we l l , that's partly what the book is supposed to do, I suppose, is to .. -

Johns will discuss the stories of these creatures and her book, Wild & Woolly: Tails from a Woodland Studio, on Monday, November 13, at 12 p.m. in the Paul Martin Centre. In Wild & Woolly, Johns paints vivid portraits of the stray and wounded creatures that she has rescued and adopted. The cast of real-life characters includes Edna the mild-mannered rabbit, Rogue the blind kitten and her sister Saffron, orphaned deer mouse Winner, Muffin the thespian dog, Ringo the raccoon and the goats Noa, Pat, Kamala, Alice, Poppy and Goatlips. "Linda Johns's stories are funny, affectionate and full of feeling. They're really a treat to read and she illustrates them beautifully," says event organizer Kathryn Wardropper. "We try to bring a wide variety of authors to the community, and Johns certainly tells some extraordinarily original stories." Johns and her husband live in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. As an artist she exhibits regularly in various galleries and her artwork has been featured in two television documentaries. In 1994 her book Sharing a Robin's Life won the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction. This is just one event in the Laurier Bookstore's Meet the Author series. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Award-winning Canadian writer Timothy Findley produced works in a number of genres, including plays, novels, and short stories. While his works are impossible to pigeon-hole, they often examine the nature of power in society and the struggle of people to understand and achieve what is right. Timothy Irving Frederick Findley--"Tiff" to his friends--was born into a prosperous Toronto family on October 30, 1930 and grew up in the fashionable Rosedale section of the city. His father was the first person outside of the founding families to head the Massey-Ferguson company. His mother's family had a piano factory. Although Findley grew up in a privileged environment, his childhood was far from happy. Under the influence of alcohol his father frequently terrorized Findley's mother and older brother. Findley himself generally escaped his wrath, but, in the words of journalist Alec Scott, "vicarious scar tissue developed nonetheless" in the sensitive young boy. Findley suffered from poor health as a child. He nearly died of pneumonia in his second year, and shortly thereafter he was confined to an oxygen tent due to complications of an ear infection. Findley was a bookish youth who loved creating his own worlds of make-believe. He was not, however, a particularly avid student. He dropped out of high school at the age of sixteen in order to study ballet. A fused disc put an end to Findley's hopes of a career in dance, and he turned to acting. -

REPRESENTATIONS OF GAY MEN IN CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN THEATRE Tony Berto Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Professor Ann Wilson This study acknowledges that historical antipathies towards gay men have marginalised their theatrical representation in the past. However, over the last century a change has occurred in the social location of gay men in Canada (from being marginalised to being included). Given these changes, questions arise as to whether staged representations of gay men are still marginalised today. Given antipathies towards homosexuality and homophobia may contribute to the how theatres determine the riskiness of productions, my investigation sought a correlation between financial risk in theatrical production and the marginalisation of gay representations on stage. Furthermore, given that gay sex itself, and its representation on stage, have been theorised as loci of antipathies to gayness, I investigate the relationship between the visibility and overtness of gay sex in a given play and the production of that play’s proximity to the mainstream. The study located four plays from across the spectrum of production conditions (from high to low financial risk) in BC. Analysis of these four plays shows general trends, not only in the plays’ constructions but also in the material conditions of their productions that indicate that gay representations become more overt, visible and sexually explicit when less financial risk was at stake. -
