Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Award-winning Canadian writer Timothy Findley produced works in a number of genres, including plays, novels, and short stories. While his works are impossible to pigeon-hole, they often examine the nature of power in society and the struggle of people to understand and achieve what is right. Timothy Irving Frederick Findley--"Tiff" to his friends--was born into a prosperous Toronto family on October 30, 1930 and grew up in the fashionable Rosedale section of the city. His father was the first person outside of the founding families to head the Massey-Ferguson company. His mother's family had a piano factory. Although Findley grew up in a privileged environment, his childhood was far from happy. Under the influence of alcohol his father frequently terrorized Findley's mother and older brother. Findley himself generally escaped his wrath, but, in the words of journalist Alec Scott, "vicarious scar tissue developed nonetheless" in the sensitive young boy. Findley suffered from poor health as a child. He nearly died of pneumonia in his second year, and shortly thereafter he was confined to an oxygen tent due to complications of an ear infection. Findley was a bookish youth who loved creating his own worlds of make-believe. He was not, however, a particularly avid student. He dropped out of high school at the age of sixteen in order to study ballet. A fused disc put an end to Findley's hopes of a career in dance, and he turned to acting. -

REPRESENTATIONS OF GAY MEN IN CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN THEATRE Tony Berto Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Professor Ann Wilson This study acknowledges that historical antipathies towards gay men have marginalised their theatrical representation in the past. However, over the last century a change has occurred in the social location of gay men in Canada (from being marginalised to being included). Given these changes, questions arise as to whether staged representations of gay men are still marginalised today. Given antipathies towards homosexuality and homophobia may contribute to the how theatres determine the riskiness of productions, my investigation sought a correlation between financial risk in theatrical production and the marginalisation of gay representations on stage. Furthermore, given that gay sex itself, and its representation on stage, have been theorised as loci of antipathies to gayness, I investigate the relationship between the visibility and overtness of gay sex in a given play and the production of that play’s proximity to the mainstream. The study located four plays from across the spectrum of production conditions (from high to low financial risk) in BC. Analysis of these four plays shows general trends, not only in the plays’ constructions but also in the material conditions of their productions that indicate that gay representations become more overt, visible and sexually explicit when less financial risk was at stake. -

2011 Winter Session (2011-2012 Academic Year) ENGL 545E: Studies in Canadian Literature (3 credits) Instructor: Sherrill Grace Section: 005 Term: 2 From Autobiography to Apocalyptic Fable: The Fiction, Drama, and Non-Fiction of Timothy Findley Course Description: Findley (1933-2002) is one of the most important literary figures of post-WWII culture in Canada. He began his career as an actor and went on to write over 10 novels, many plays, short stories, autobiographies, scripts and essays, and he intervened in some of the most significant cultural debates of late 20th century life—in Canada and internationally. In his fiction, non-fiction, and plays, he often stretched the limits of narrative and dramatic conventions in fascinating ways. His plays are among leading examples of post-modern Canadian drama, and they explore timeless questions of gender, identity, history, and performance. In this seminar we will examine representative examples of his work against the background of Canadian literary and theatrical developments during the last decades of the 20th century to explore, not only the texts themselves, but also the ways in which he established new ‘norms’ and broke new ground for postmodern narratives. Among the issues we will address are: the impact of The Wars on writing about war in Canada; the ethics of fiction and postmodern narrative strategies; the challenges presented to History by Findley’s historiographic aesthetics in his plays and novels; the function of memory and the process of autobiographical constructions of identity; and the role of the writer as public intellectual (eg. re the protests against and Senate inquiry into the film, The Valour and the Horror). -

Timothy Findley , in full Timothy Irving Frederick Findley , (born October 30, 1930, Toronto, Ontario, Canada—died June 20, 2002, France), Canadian author known for his intelligent writing and storytelling. His subject matter is often the lives of troubled individuals. Poor health caused Findley to abandon formal education after the ninth grade. At age 17 he began a 15-year acting career that led to roles in several television dramas and Shakespeare productions; a protégé of British actor Alec Guinness, he appeared on the English and American stage. He also began writing short stories during the 1950s. His first two novels are set in southern California, where he lived for a time. The Last of the Crazy People (1967) is about a despairing, obsessive boy whose attempts to cope with his dysfunctional family lead to murder and madness, while The Butterfly Plague (1969) presents a late-1930s Hollywood family whose members embody the world’s ills. In the early 1970s Findley wrote radio and television scripts and a play, Can You See Me Yet? (produced 1976), then followed with his two most acclaimed novels. The Wars (1977) features the dilemmas of soldier Robert Ross as he attempts to cope with an officer and 130 doomed horses in the midst of World War I. Famous Last Words (1981) is narrated by Ezra Pound’s character Hugh Selwyn Mauberley and features noted real (as well as fictional) characters trying to manipulate the catastrophes of World War II for their personal ends. -

We have learnt about The Chamberlain’s Men, and realise that actors have been, and still are all the same; they like a drink after the show, they know everything about everybody in the cast, they can find a dirty joke in anything, and they love each other desperately. What a Director always needs are the words, the best Set Designer in BC, a Sound Designer who spends hours finding the right dog bark and other sounds that are best left for a surprise, a Musician Extraordinaire, whose research into the music of the period is overwhelming, a Costume Designer who has left no stone unturned, and whose passion is also overwhelming, and a cast that could not be bettered. My heartfelt thanks to Timothy Findley, Bill Adams, Al Mackenzie, Rick Underwood, Lisa Leighton, and every person you see on stage tonight! The most important thing for you to know before this play begins is that Essex was Elizabeth’s lover, and Southampton was William’s. Or not……. Maufort occasionally broaches such topics but, regrettably,he only partially explores contexts that could have developed his analysis into fully contrastive readings. These limitations aside, the breadth of material that Maufort covers is impressive, and if the author’s methodology does not quite fulfill his aims, Transgressive Itineraries surely helps set the direction for future studies of its kind. Fifty-five seasons after its founding, there can be no doubt that the story of the Stratford Festival is—resoundingly—a success story: the theatre’s phenomenal growth will attest to that. The William Harris Papers Marymount Manhattan College 221 East 71st Street New York, New York 10021 Archives Collection #001 Processed October 2, 2001 Mary Elizabeth Brown William Balber (Billy) Harris was born April 9, 1951, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was an alumnus of the Lawrenceville School and of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Upon graduation, he moved to New York. At one time, he lived on Reade Street in Tribeca, and at the time of his death, he lived in #7C at 160 Front Street near the Fulton Fish Market.1 He divided his time between two kinds of writing, one being business writing. He was a staff writer for Forbes Magazine and Institutional Investor and managing editor of Treasury and Risk Management and The Daily Deal. He was also a drama and dance critic. He became interested in the theater in Pittsburgh, where he worked designing props under Peter Chandler of Periwig Productions, and at the Kirby Arts Center. He recalled coming to New York from Pittsburgh at the age of 17 to pay $9 to see a performance of Hair.2 He was the theater editor for the SoHo Weekly News and managing editor of Theatre Crafts Magazine. He also wrote articles, criticism and reviews for Art Forum, Brooklyn Bridge, The New York Times, The Newark Star Ledger, and The Village Voice. It was in the course of this work that he amassed his collection of papers. Mr. Harris died of a massive coronary July 27, 2000, in New York City at the age of 49. He was survived by his mother Vivienne, of Pittsburgh; his sister, Ellen, who lived in Denver, and his brother John, a physician in the San Francisco area. -

Reader’s Guide – Spadework About the Author Timothy Findley was one of Canada’s most compelling and best loved writers. He is the author of many acclaimed novels including Pilgrim and The Piano Man’s Daughter, which were both finalists for The Giller Prize. He was also a two-time winner of the Governor General’s Award: The Wars won the 1997 award for fiction; Elizabeth Rex, a play, won the 2000 award for drama. Another of his plays, The Stillborn Lover, won a Chalmers Award. His other novels, plays, and non-fiction works have garnered critical acclaim both in Canada and internationally. Timothy Findley was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He died in June 2002. Inside Spadework Green-eyed and well-defined by bones, Jane was neither beautiful nor forbidding. She was, instead, disturbing—provocative. Who could this woman be, wrapped in all these silent conundrums? people thought. To relative strangers, it seemed that Jane merely waited in the shadow of her actor husband, their son, Will, and her own profession. None of this told anything like the true story. Her life was subdivided between the everyday and the extraordinary. To all appearances, Jane Kincaid has it all: a handsome husband whose acting career is on the rise; a generous bank account from her American family; a great job, a bright seven-year old son. -
