FSSAI all set to launch ‘One Nation, One Food Law’

In a bid to bring in consistency in enforcing food safety regulations and standards across States, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is set to launch its ‘One Nation One Food Law’ initiative.

Under this initiative, FSSAI is launching the Food Safety Compliance through Regular Inspections and Sampling (FoSCoRIS) platform.

President of India inaugurates Global Clubfoot Conference

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, inaugurated the Global Clubfoot Conference being organised by the CURE India in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in New Delhi on November 1, 2017.

The clubfoot is one of the most common orthopaedic birth defects. It can cause permanent disability if not treated early.

PM to inaugurate World Food India 2017

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will inaugurate World Food India 2017 on 3rd November 2017 from Vigyan Bhavan New Delhi.

This is the first time that India is hosting such an event for the Food processing sector. World Food India platform will strengthen India’s position as a Global Food Factory and is a positive step towards making the Country Food Secure.

ONGC gets government nod for acquiring HPCL

ONGC has received the Information Memorandum from the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management for acquiring majority stake in fellow public sector undertaking HPCL.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has launched an online portal for registering complaint related to sexual harassment in non-government and government organisations.

The comprehensive online complaint system- ‘SHe-box’ (sexual harassment electronic box) – will be hosted on the website of the Ministry Of Women and Child Development.

Railway launches new gold standard trains as part of Swarn Project

As part of Railways’ Swarn project, Indian Railways will showcase its first train with enhanced features and upgraded utilities. New Delhi-Kathgodam Shatabdi Express will bear a new look. The Swarn project aims to upgrade premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi.

At a cost of Rs 50 Lakh each, the trains will provide additional security with more CCTV cameras and more RPF personnel on board. Punctuality has also been identified as a focus area for these trains.

Indian Railways launches main arch on world’s highest bridge on Chenab

The Indian Railways has launched the main arch of the world’s highest bridge on the River Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district which will provide direct connectivity to the Kashmir Valley.

The iconic bridge will soar 359 metres above the bed of the River Chenab and will be 30 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in .

Minister of Communications Manoj Sinha has launched a Pan India scholarship program for school children called Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana to increase the reach of Philately.

SHe-Box launched for both public and private sector

The Minister of Women & Child Development, Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi launched an online complaint management system titled Sexual Harassment electronic–Box (SHe-Box) for registering complaints related to sexual harassment at workplace in New Delhi.

The complaint management system has been developed to ensure the effective implementation of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act (the SH Act), 2013.

Kiren Rijiju inaugurates the ‘India Disaster Response Summit’

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju has said that India need to prepare itself for moving towards Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) from an approach of traditional Disaster Management.

Rijiju was inaugurating the ‘India Disaster Response Summit’, organised jointly by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Facebook.

Govt to launch project to connect 1.5L rural areas with WiFi

The government will start its second and final phase of BharatNet project – with an outlay of around Rs 34,000 crore — to provide high-speed broadband in all panchayats by March 2019.

Under the project, the government aims to connect 1.5 lakh panchayats through 10 lakh kilometres of additional optical fibre and give bandwidth to telecom players at nearly 75 per cent cheaper price for broadband and wifi services in rural areas.

India’s first ever ‘Air Dispensary to start soon in North-East

Northeast is all set to get India’s first-ever “Air Dispensary” based in a helicopter and the Union Ministry of Development of Northeast (DONER) has already contributed Rs. 25 crore as part of the initial funding for this initiative.

The DoNER Ministry had been exploring the idea of introducing a helicopter based Dispensary/OPD service in such far flung and remote areas, where no doctor or medical facility was available and the patient, in need, also did not have any access to any medical care.

India to become world’s 3rd largest economy by 2028: BofA

India is likely to achieve strong growth over the next decade and will overtake in nominal GDP by 2028, to emerge as the world’s third-largest economy, says a foreign brokerage Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoAML).

The country has already overtaken and to emerge as the second-largest Brics economy after China and is well on track to cross and Britain to emerge as the world’s fifth-largest economy after Germany by 2019.

Apple to help Indian government develop anti-spam app

Apple Inc has agreed to give limited help to the Indian government to develop an anti-spam mobile application for its iOS platform, after refusing to do so based on privacy concerns.

The government app was launched on Google’s Android platform last year, but an industry source with direct knowledge of the matter said Apple pushed back on requests for an iOS version due to concerns that a government app with access to call and text logs could compromise its customers’ privacy.

R.K. Singh, Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana – ‘Saubhagya’ Web Portal. The portal can be accessed at http://saubhagya.gov.in.

The Saubhagya Dashboard is a platform for monitoring household electrification progress, which would disseminate information on Household Electrification Status (State, District, village-wise), Household Progress on live basis, State-wise Target vs Achievement, Monthly Electrification Progress, etc.

Health Ministry introduces Daily Drug Regimen for treatment of Tuberculosis

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has recently announced the launch of daily regimen for TB patients across the country under The Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP).

The based Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an international non-profit organization, has awarded £43,373 (Rs 37,25,740) fund for promoting sustainable practices in the country’s fisheries sector.

BRPL launches Bharat QR code-enabled facility for electricity

To promote digital transactions, power discom BRPL has launched a Bharat QR code-enabled facility for payment of electricity bills.

The consumers opting for digital payment can get cash back from minimum 10 per cent up to Rs 75 per cent per transaction. The facility was launched by BRPL CEO Amal Sinha.

Facebook aims to train 5 lakh Indians on digital skills by 2020

Social networking giant Facebook on November,22 2017 said it expects to train about five lakh people in India on digital skills by 2020 and has unveiled two programmes designed for individuals and start-ups.

The two programmes – Facebook Digital Training and Facebook Startup Training Hubs – are being rolled out in India before any other country.

Union Cabinet approves hike in salary for SC, HC judges

The Union cabinet has approved increases in the salaries, gratuity payments, allowances and pensions payable to judges of the Supreme Court and the high courts.

The increases in salary and allowances will benefit 31 judges of the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice, and 1,079 high court judges. Around 2,500 retired judges will also benefit on account of higher pensions and gratuity payments.

The government also approved expanding the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao umbrella scheme — the National Mission for Empowerment of Women.

MHA to conduct Multi State Mega Mock Tsunami Exercise 2017

The Ministry of Home Affairs through National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) will conduct a multi-State mega mock exercise on tsunami preparedness.

The exercise will be simultaneously conducted in 31 coastal districts across four States – West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu – and Union Territory Puducherry along the entire East Coast.

Prez to inaugurate conference on National Law Day

President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the 2-day conference on National Law Day which among other things will see deliberation on collegium system and balancing the separation of power between judiciary and Parliament.

The National Law Day is celebrated on November 26, the day on which the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.

Assam signs MoUs with for skilling state’s youth

Assam government has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) and Terms of Reference (ToR) with Singapore for skilling youth of the state.

An MoU for Guwahati City Greening was inked between the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority and Singapore Corporation Enterprise.

The Assam state government will provide skill development training to 78,500 poor rural youths during 2016-19 under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDUJKY).

Sonowal launches 647 schemes for development of Majuli

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has rolled out 647 schemes entailing an investment of Rs 24.57 crore for development of the world’s largest river island Majuli.

In a move to bolster development of the river island Majuli, Sonowal launched 647 schemes under MGNREGA and 14th Finance Commission to be implemented with a financial outlay of Rs 24.57 crore.

Bengal to get World Bank subsidy to buy 130 electric buses

The West Bengal government has negotiated with the World Bank to avail subsidy to buy 130 electric buses for plying in Kolkata, Asansol and Durgapur.

The World Bank has agreed to provide a subsidy of Rs seven lakh per bus. While 100 buses would play in Kolkata, the remaining 30 have been earmarked for industrial towns of Durgapur and Asansol.

Allahabad to Get India’s First Black Buck Conservation Reserve

Uttar pradesh cabinet has decided to make india’s first conservation reserve for black buck in Allahabad’s Meja.

Among the five major decisions taken in the cabinet meeting, the black buck conservation reserve in Meja Forest Division of Allahabad is seen as the most important one.

Urdu declared as second official language in Telengana

Chief Minister of Telangana K Chandrashekhar Rao recently declared Urdu as the state’s second official language.

Now all government offices from the Chief Minister’s office to District Collectorate will receive all petitions in Urdu also. Every office in Telangana will have an Urdu-speaking officer. All competitive examinations in the state will also be conducted in Urdu.

IKEA opens first ‘Hej HOME’ in India at Hyderabad

Swedish home furnishing major IKEA has launched its first experiential centre ‘IKEA Hej HOME’ in Hyderabad, ahead of opening its first store in the country at the same state in spring 2018.

Hej HOME is an exhibition of IKEA products and solutions where future potential customers can experience IKEA products before they can actually buy it from its store (in Hyderabad) in spring 2018.

Kerala road accident victims to get free aid for 1st 48 hrs

The Kerala government has decided to formulate a trauma-care scheme in the State wherein all emergency care and treatment will be provided to accident victims free-of-cost for the first 48 hours once the person has been admitted to a hospital.

The government will pay for the emergency care expenses incurred by a hospital for an accident victim for the first 48 hours, which would be recouped from insurance companies later.

Kerala launches Ayurveda tourism programme

A new tourism product ‘AyurBodha’, which blends tourism and learning about ayurveda for those visiting Kerala, was launched at the World Travel Mart (WTM) in London. The programme was launched by state Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran.

IORA to set up Centre of Excellence in Kochi

The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), common platform of 21 countries including India and geographically bordering Indian Ocean, is to set up a Centre of Excellence in Kochi.

IORA is a regional forum of countries, tripartite in nature, bringing together representatives of government, business and academia, for promoting co-operation and closer interaction among Indian Ocean bordering countries. The headquarters of IORA is located at Ebene, Mauritius.

B’luru joins 91-city network to collate climate change data

Bengaluru has joined 91 cities across the globe in collating data on climate change. Called the Datacity programme led by French start-up accelerator NUMA, Bengaluru is the recent city to join this network along with Barcelona and Singapore.

The aim of the programme is to develop data which can help resolve climate challenges. According to NUMA representatives, the programme has been successfully implemented in Paris and Casablanca. The Datacity programme was launched in Paris in 2015.

The Karnataka cabinet has approved the Karnataka Electronics System Design and Manufacturing Policy 2017-22, aimed at encouraging the hardware sector.

India’s Electronic System Design and Manufacturing industry is forecasted to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 16-23 per cent to reach USD 171-228 billion by 2020.

Mumbai’s Royal Opera House gets UNESCO heritage award

Almost a year after it reopened, Charni Road’s Royal Opera House has been awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The building was closed to the public in 1993, and sat crumbling for years, before a restoration project was undertaken eight years ago to replicate the heritage structure. It was originally inaugurated by Britain’s King George V in 1911 and completed in 1916.

Real-time satellite imagery to help track health of mangrove forests in Maharashtra

The health of mangroves in Maharashtra will now be monitored using real-time satellite images. The state mangrove cell has approved a proposal from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology in Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

The research project commissioned to track the health of mangrove forests using real-time satellite remote sensing data. This is the first time any state in India has allocated its resources to survey mangrove cover along its coastline.

Vice Prez to inaugurate agrovision summit in Nagpur

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the 9th Agrovision Summit in Nagpur on November 10. The three-day summit will be held at the Reshimbagh ground.

According to organisers, a mega agri expo and free workshops for farmers will be held during the summit, besides a livestock demo and a conference on allied agriculture.

Mumbai to host Asian Bankers Association summit

The Maharashtra government, in a bid to become plastic-free state from March 2018, has banned packaged water bottles inMantralaya and other government offices.

Mumbai Metro launches QR-based mobile ticketing facility

Reliance Infrastructure-run Mumbai Metro One has launched a mobile ticketing facility called Skiiip Q in association with digital payments player Paytm that will help commuters book their tickets even from outside the metro stations.

Instead of using tokens or smart cards, commuters can travel using the QR code generated by mobile app on automated fare collection gates of the 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro line.

Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has announced setting up of a Gender Budget Cell for better implementation of various schemes of the Women and Child Development (WCD) by other government departments.

The Budget Cell will be responsible for coordination between various departments for effective implementation of the schemes. Inter-departmental committees will be set up among the concerned departments.

Indian Oil sets up India’s first electric vehicle charging station

State-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has announced launch of nation’s first electric vehicle charging station at a petrol pump in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

IOC, in collaboration with Ola, has a launched the country’s first electric charging station at one of its petrol-diesel stations in Nagpur. Nagpur is the first city to introduce Electric Public Transportation Model in India.

Two-day Sagar Kavach exercise starts on November 8 in Goa

The two-day Coastal Security Exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’ is scheduled on November 8 and 9, 2017 to provide seamless seaward cover along the Goa Coast jointly by all security agencies from coastal belt area line to the limit of territorial water i.e 12 nautical miles.

The exercise will also assess the effectiveness of coastal fishing community in serving as ‘Eye and Ears’ for early warning of seaward threat. The Coastal Security exercise is being conducted and coordinated by Indian Coast Guard, District Headquarter at Goa.

Second Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) of India established

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, has signed an Institutional agreement with Anna University, Chennai.

TN govt starts free coaching for competitive exams like NEET

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was launched a project to provide free coaching for Plus-Two students to enable them take competitive examinations, including the controversial National Eligibility- cum-Entrance Test or NEET.

The scheme will benefit students in government and government-aided schools. So far, around 73,000 students have enrolled for training. As many as 25 centres started functioning.

Forests Minister Rao Narbir Singh has laid the foundation stone for Butterfly Conservatory Park, which will be developed on 15 acres in Sector 52 of Gurugram and will be the biggest butterfly park in North India.

The state Forest Department is setting up the park to conserve the species of butterflies that are near extinction because of the massive urbanisation in the area. The park will be developed in association with Uthaan, an NGO.

Cashless medical facility to be launched in Haryana on Nov 30

The Haryana government will launch cashless medical facility on November 30, under which treatment costing up to Rs five lakh will be provided to its regular employees and pensioners.

The facility would be available at all 67 government hospitals, medical colleges and empanelled hospitals. In these hospitals, employees and pensioners would not have to pay medical bills of up to Rs five lakh.

Haryana announces new scheme for domestic power connections

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced a new scheme under which one can pay just Rs 200 upfront and get a domestic power connection in any rural area of the state.

Rest of the amount can be paid in easy instalments of Rs 100 to Rs 200. At present, one has to pay anything between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,000 to get a connection.

The Araku valley near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh is all set to host the first edition of its Hot Air Balloon Festival.

The Hot Air Balloon festival is being organsied to promote tourism. Known for its coffee plantations, rich cultural heritage and stunning waterfalls, Araku valley is a known destination on the country’s tourist map.

Prez Kovind launches schemes worth ₹3,400 crore in Jharkhand

President Ram Nath Kovind was launched, or laid the foundation stones of, various schemes entailing total expenditure of Rs 3,455 crore in Jharkhand to coincide with the state’s 17th Foundation Day.

Kovind launched the Rs 636-crore ‘Mukhyamantri Health Insurance Scheme’ under which 57 lakh of the 68 lakh families in the state will benefit. Beneficiaries will get treatment costing Rs 2 lakh under the scheme.

Cabinet nod for introduction of Bill to amend NCTE Act

To grant retrospective recognition to central/ State/ Union Territory-funded institutions and universities conducting teacher education courses without National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993 (NCTE) recognition till the academic year 2017-2018, the Union Cabinet gave its approval for introduction of a Bill in Parliament to amend the Act concerned.

The National Council for Teacher Education (Amendment) Act, 2017 will grant retrospective recognition to the Central/state universities that are found to be conducting teacher education courses without NCTE permission.

Cabinet approves trade Agreement between India and for strengthening and promoting trade and economic cooperation

The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval for the trade Agreement between India and Ethiopia for strengthening and promoting trade and economic co-operation.

The trade Agreement was signed on 5th October, 2017 during the State visit of the President of India to Ethiopia from 4th to 6th October, 2017.

The trade Agreement will replace the existing trade Agreement signed in 1982. The trade Agreement will provide for all necessary measures to encourage trade, economic cooperation, investment and technical co-operation.

Cabinet approves signing an Agreement between India and on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing and ratifying an Agreement between India and Armenia on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters. The Agreement will be signed on behalf of the two countries after it is approved by the respective Governments.

This Agreement shall enter into force on the first day of the second month after the Contracting Parties notify each other in through diplomatic channels, that the necessary national legal requirements for entry into force of this Agreement have been fulfilled.

Cabinet approves ₹25,700 cr for convention centre in Delhi

The Cabinet has approved Rs 25,703 crore for development of an Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre at Dwarka to put the national capital in the league of Shanghai, and Singapore in the area of exhibition market, an official statement said.

The Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (ECC) and allied infrastructure will be developed in public private partnership (PPP) and non-PPP mode (including exhibition and convention

Cabinet approves creation of body to conduct entrance exams

The Union cabinet has approved the establishment of an independent body to conduct high- profile entrance exams, including the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for students aspiring to join medical colleges and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Main) for admission to the elite Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), twice a year.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will be an autonomous organization that will oversee the conduct of entrance exams for admission to higher educational institutions. Some four million students appear every year in tests that determine their eligibility for admission to prestigious institutions.

Cabinet approves continuation and Restructuring of National Rural Drinking Water Programme

The Union Cabinet has accorded its approval for continuation and restructuring of National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) to make it outcome-based, competitive and better monitored with increased focus on sustainability (functionality) of schemes to ensure good quality service delivery to the rural population.

A sum of Rs. 23,050 crore has been approved for the programme for the Fourteenth Finance Commission (FFC) period 2017-18 to 2019-20.

Cabinet approves Creation of National Testing Agency (NTA)

The Union Cabinet chaired has approved creation of National Testing Agency (NTA) as a Society registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860, and as an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organization to conduct entrance examinations for higher educational institutions.

Cabinet approves utilisation of pulses from the buffer stock

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved to utilize part of stock of pulses in the buffer maintained by the Department of Consumer Affairs, for meeting the protein component under various schemes of Central Government providing nutrition to various target groups/beneficiaries.

To give effect to the decision, the CCEA has empowered the concerned Departments/Ministries to carry out suitable amendments in their schemes/guidelines to enable them to take/provide pulses from the buffer in kind under their respective Schemes.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Philippines in the field of agriculture and related fields.

The MoU will improve bilateral cooperation in the field of agriculture and will be mutually beneficial to both countries. It will promote understanding of best agricultural practices in the two countries and will help in better productivity as well as improved global market access.

Cabinet approves Rs 3,320 cr plan to boost judicial infrastructure

The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of a centrally-sponsored scheme for the development of infrastructural facilities for the judiciary beyond the 12th Five-Year Plan till March 31, 2020.

The scheme — with an estimated outlay of Rs 3,320 crore — for the development of such infrastructure will be implemented in a mission mode through the National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms.

Cabinet approves creation of GST anti-profiteering authority

The union cabinet has approved the establishment of the much-anticipated National Anti- profiteering Authority (NAA) to ensure the benefits of such rate cuts are passed on to consumers.

Anti-profiteering measures will provide an institutional framework to ensure that the full benefits of input tax credits and reduced GST rates on goods or services flow to consumers.

Cabinet clears new scheme for rural women with annual outlay of Rs 3,636 cr

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a new scheme — Mahila Shakti Kendra — to empower rural women with an outlay of Rs 3,636.85 crore, with a Central share of Rs 3,084.96 crore during the period 2017-18 to 2019-20.

The objectives of the scheme include improvement in child sex ratio, ensuring survival, protection and education of the girl child, to provide an interface to rural women to avail of entitlements.

Cabinet approves ordinance for making changes in insolvency code

The Cabinet has approved the promulgation of an Ordinance for making amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code to streamline the selection of buyers for stressed assets.

It is expected to stop wilful defaulters from buying back stressed assets that they previously owned.

Cabinet approves setting up of 15th Finance Commission

The Cabinet has approved the setting up of the 15th Finance Commission which will assess the tax resources of the nation and suggest a formula for their devolution among states.

Its recommendations will have to be in place before April 1, 2020. As per Article 280 of the Constitution, the Commission is required to make recommendations on the distribution of the net proceeds of taxes between the Centre and the states.

Cabinet approves Expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao for a Pan India reach covering all the 640 districts (as per census 2011) of the Country to have a deeper positive impact on Child Sex Ratio.

The Scheme was launched by the Prime Minister on 22nd January, 2015 at Panipat, Haryana as a comprehensive programme to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and related issues of empowerment of women over a life-cycle continuum.

Cabinet approves expansion of Pradhan Mantri Mahila Shakti Kendra

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for expansion of the schemes of Ministry of Women and Child Development under Umbrella Scheme “Mission for Protection and Empowerment for Women” for a period 2017-18 to 2019-20.

CCEA has also given approval to the new scheme called ‘Pradhan Mantri Mahila Shakti Kendra’, which will empower rural women through community participation to create an environment in which they realize their full potential.

Cabinet approves ordinance related to bamboo in non-forest

The Cabinet is learnt to have approved an ordinance which seeks to amend the Indian Forest Act to exempt bamboo grown in non-forest areas from the requirement of felling or transit permit.

The move seeks to encourage bamboo plantations by farmers which will contribute to achieving the objective of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022. The amendment to Section 2(7) of the Indian Forest Act, 1927 was approved by the Cabinet

Govt sets up panel to review income tax laws

The government has constituted a task force for redrafting the 50-year old income tax law in sync with the economic needs of the country.

It will make the Institute self-sustainable by the end of FY 2019-20.

The Union Cabinet has approved the signing and ratifying of an Agreement between India and Philippines on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters.

HDFC Bank to set up SmartUp Zones across country

Private sector HDFC Bank has announced that it will launch SmartUp Zones in 30 cities, aimed at serving entrepreneurs. The SmartUp Zones will be launched in over 65 branches of the bank in these cities, including tier II and III locations that have emerged as start-up hubs.

In Chennai, the Smartup Zone will be set up in HDFC’s Nungambakkam branch to serve 1,000 city based start-ups. They will have specially trained staff offering tailor-made banking and advisory solutions to entrepreneurs.

ICICI Bank launches voice-based international remittance service

ICICI Bank, the country’s largest private sector bank by consolidated assets, has launched voice- based international remittance service on its Money2India application.

Yes Bank signs MoU with government for financing Rs 1,000 crore

Private sector lender Yes Bank has signed an agreement with the government to provide Rs 1,000 crore financing for food processing projects. The funding will be provided to around 100 food processing projects with an average ticket size of Rs 10 crore each.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was amid the ongoing three-day World Food India being organized by the Food Processing Ministry.

AU Small Finance Bank gets RBI nod for Scheduled Commercial Bank

AU Small Finance Bank has received Reserved Bank of India (RBI) approval to operate as Scheduled Commercial Bank. This bank’s name has now been included in the Second Schedule of Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

Post acquiring scheduled commercial bank status, AU Small Finance Bank will be able to do borrowing and lending with RBI under Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF).

HDFC Bank makes RTGS, NEFT online transactions free from Nov 1

Private lender HDFC Bank has made online transactions through RTGS and NEFT free of cost from November 1, with an aim to promote a digital economy.

On the other hand, various charges for cheque-related transactions as well as request for additional leaves will get costly from early next month for non-managed savings and salary accounts.

Crypto currencies, ICOs under SEBI lens

The rising popularity of crypto currencies and the increasing number of entities looking at raising funds through Initial Coin Offerings (ICO) has caught the attention of the capital market regulator, which is evaluating whether such instruments and offerings can be brought under its regulatory purview.

PayPal Launches Domestic Payments in India

American digital payments company PayPal launched domestic operations in India. At launch, Indian consumers will be able to make transactions at select online merchants.

Merchants offering PayPal will be able to process both local and global payments through the platform, getting access to PayPal’s more than 200 million customers around the world and in India through a single integration.

IDFC Bank partners MobiKwik for virtual in-app prepaid cards

IDFC Bank, MobiKwik and Net1 have come together to launch a co-branded virtual prepaid card on Visa platform. Around 65 million users of MobiKwik will gain access to an IDFC Bank virtual card embedded within the app, making digital purchases at all e-commerce merchants easier and faster.

Customers of MobiKwik can generate a 16-digit Visa virtual card through the app and use it for e-commerce and online transactions.

YES Bank, which runs a startup accelerator programme called Yes Fintech, is looking at exclusive global exchange programme partnerships to help Indian start-ups gain access to developed markets in terms of business and investments.

India, World Bank sign loan agreement towards Solar Parks Project

The union government and the World Bank signed a guarantee agreement for USD 98 million and grant agreement for USD 2 million for the “Shared Infrastructure for Solar Parks Project.”

The objective of the project is to increase solar generation capacity through establishment of large-scale parks in the country.

SBI to use blockchain technology for smart contracts, KYC

Indian multinational, public sector banking and financial services company, State Bank of India (SBI) has announced plans to launch blockchain-enabled smart contracts and Know Your Customers (KYC) by next month, said Sudin Baraokar, head of innovation, SBI.

These applications are part of BankChain pilot projects, a community of 27 banks exploring and building blockchain solutions for banking needs.

Axis Bank launches blockchain-based international payment service

Private sector lender Axis Bank has launched an instant international payment services using Ripple’s enterprise blockchain technology solution for retail and corporate customers.

Though an international offer, the bank is offering the facility only to its retail customers in the country to receive payments from the UAE-based Rak Bank and for its corporate customers to receive payments from Standard Chartered, Singapore.

President Ram Nath Kovind has gave his assent to the Ordinance approved by the Union Cabinet to amend the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) to strengthen the regime.

The Ordinance aims to put safeguards in place by prohibiting wilful defaulters, those associated with non-performing assets (NPAs), and the habitually non-compliant, from regaining control of the defaulting company/stressed assets through the backdoor in the garb of a ‘resolution applicant.’

Mumbai based payment gateway Billdesk has launched ‘Coinome’, India’s first crypto-currency exchange.

Russia to help build India-Iran natural gas pipeline

Moscow and Tehran are about to sign a memorandum of understanding to back a new gas pipeline project, according to Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak.

The countries will build a 1,200-kilometer long pipeline from Iran to India with the Russian energy major Gazprom developing several Iranian deposits along the route of the future pipeline.

USA to Grant $500K to NGO to promote religious freedom in India

The US has announced a grant of nearly USD 500,000 for a non-governmental organisation to come up with proposals to develop early warning systems for “reducing religiously-motivated violence and discrimination” in India. The US State Department also announced a similar grant for .

The Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, in its notice of funding opportunity, said through its USD 493,827 India programme, it seeks to “reduce religiously-motivated violence and discrimination in India”.

Government Launch Various Projects to improve India- Connectivity

India and Bangladesh have jointly launched bilateral connectivity projects for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Thailand will introduce biometric checks nationwide for mobile telephone users to register their SIM cards from Dec. 15, the telecoms regulator, in a bid to stamp out fraudulent electronic transactions.

The new rules require users to either have their fingerprints verified or their faces scanned. The regulator first launched the system in June in Thailand’s troubled south where a separatist insurgency has persisted for more than a decade, killing more than 6,500 people since 2004.

China launches world’s first fully electric cargo ship

China has launched the world’s first all-electric ship, which can travel up to 80km with 2000- tonnes cargo after a two-hour charge. The 70.5-metre-long ship, which weighs about 600 tonnes, was launched in Guangzhou in South China’s Guangdong Province.

The vessel, manufactured by the Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Ltd, is powered by a 26-tonne lithium battery. It can cruise at the top speed of 12.8 km per hour.

The hyperloop mode uses technology in which a vehicle in a special tunnel floats above the track, using magnetic levitation, at a top speed of over 1,000 km per hour.

NASA launches next-generation weather satellite

NASA has launched a next- generation satellite into space designed to monitor weather around the world and help improve forecasts.

The satellite, called the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1), is a joint venture between the US space agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which provides weather reports and forecasts.

The satellite was launched aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Planet Labs Inc, a US-based integrated aerospace and data analytics company, four of its Dove satellites will be launched aboard India’s PSLV-C40 mission, scheduled to fly in January next year.

The primary payload for this mission is Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Cartosat-2 Series satellite, and Planet’s four satellites will ride as secondary payloads.

India slips 21 places on WEF Gender Gap index

India slipped 21 places on the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap index to 108, behind neighbours China and Bangladesh, primarily due to less participation of women in the economy and low wages.

Moreover, India’s latest ranking is 10 notches lower than its reading in 2006 when the WEF started measuring the gender gap.

According to the WEF Global Gender Gap Report 2017, India has closed 67 per cent of its gender gap, less than many of its international peers, and some of its neighbours like Bangladesh ranked 47th while China was placed at 100th.

India tops domestic air passenger traffic in September, China second: IATA

India’s domestic passenger traffic was the highest among major aviation markets at 15.5 per cent in September, followed by China and the Russian Federation.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), in its global passenger traffic data, revealed that India’s domestic demand — revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) — was the highest among major aviation markets like Australia, Brazil, China, Japan, Russia and the US.

India’s ranks 100th in World Bank’s Doing Business Report 2018

For the first time ever, India has jumped 30 positions to become the top 100th country in terms of ease of doing business ranking this year. This was announced by the World Bank Group's latest Doing Business 2018: Reforming to Create Jobs report in Delhi on 31, October 2017.

Last year, India had moved just one point, from 131st position among 190 countries to 130th position, prompting Modi government to question the credibility of World Bank's ranking process.

India at 7th position in business optimism ranking: Report

India has slipped in ‘business optimism’ index to the 7th position in the September quarter, from the 2nd slot in the previous three months, showing clear signs of lag in the economy, says a survey.

Indonesia is at the top, followed by Finland (2nd), the Netherlands (3rd), Philippines (4th), Austria (5th) and (6th), as per Grant Thornton’s International Business Report (IBR).

Three IITs and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore have made the cut among top 20 varsities in BRICS countries, according to the latest QS Rankings.

Over 300 universities from India, China, Russia, and Brazil have been observed and graded for the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking, one of the global prestigious rankings.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has secured ninth rank followed by IISc, Bangalore (10), IIT Delhi (15) and IIT Madras (18).

Indo – Kazakhstan Joint Exercise “PRABAL DOSTYK 2017” Begins

A fourteen day joint training exercise “PRABAL DOSTYK – 2017” was commenced between the Indian Army and the Kazakhstan Army with the Opening Ceremony at Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh.

The joint exercise is aimed at enhancing the military ties between the two countries as also at achieving interoperability between the two armies.

The training contingents comprise of platoon strength from the 11th Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army and a similar strength of the Kazakhstan Army.

Indian Air Force, DRDO successfully test-fire ‘Glide’ bomb

The Indian Air Force, along with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested an indigenously developed light weight ‘Glide’ bomb in Chandipur in Odisha. With this DRDO announced that this bomb will soon be inducted into the armed forces.

Named SAAW (Smart Anti Airfield Weapon), it was dropped from an IAF aircraft at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur.

SAAW is developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), along with other laboratories of the DRDO and the Indian Air Force.

India, Bangladesh to hold joint military combat exercise

The Indian and the Bangladeshi army are all set to take part in an intensive combat exercise at India’s Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School at Vairengte in Mizoram.

As per reports, “Exercise Sampriti” will be conducted from November 6 to 18. The military combat exercise is organised to conduct counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in a semi-mountainous jungle terrain to bolster bilateral military ties.

Long-range cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ test-fired

India has conducted a flight test of its indigenously designed and developed long-range sub- sonic cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’, which can carry warheads of up to 300 kg from a test range at Chandipur along the Odisha coast.

This was the fifth experimental test of the homegrown missile system. Defence scientists are hopeful of a flawless trial this time. Out of four earlier trials since its maiden launch in 2013, only one was successful.

Indian Navy to use CATOBAR AIRCRAFT LAUNCH System on Aircraft Carrier

The Navy is likely to go with an advanced catapult-based aircraft launch mechanism (CATOBAR) from the U.S. for its second indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC-II), which is on the drawing board.

India has been exploring the possibility of installing the U.S. electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS). The Navy envisages the IAC-II to be around 65,000 tonnes and capable of carrying over 50 aircraft.

Odisha, WB to hold first-ever joint coastal security exercise

The governments of Odisha and neighbouring West Bengal will soon organize a joint security exercise named as ‘Sagar Kavach’ to further tighten the existing coastal security mechanism along the 630 km long coastline.

Sagar Kavach security exercise is a realistic drill to check the efficacy of the security parameters and preparedness of various security forces like the Indian Navy, Marine police force, Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Forest Department, Fisheries and district administration.

Indo-Bangladesh Exercise ‘SAMPRITI 2017’

Indo-Bangladesh joint exercise SAMPRITI was held at Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Vairengte in Mizoram. Exercise SAMPRITI is an important bilateral defence cooperation endeavour between India and Bangladesh.

The exercise is aimed at strengthening and broadening the aspects of interoperability and cooperation between the Indian and Bangladesh Armies while working together in a counter- insurgency and counter-terrorism environment under the UN mandate.

Ministry of Defence Scraps $500 million Israeli Missile Deal

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to indigenously develop and produce a Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) for the Army, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has decided to cancel the $500 million deal for Spike ATGM with Israel.

In anticipation of this deal, Rafael had entered into a joint venture with Kalyani group for missile production in India. The missile sub-systems manufacturing facility, based near Hyderabad, was inaugurated in August.

India-Myanmar joint Army exercise “IMBAX-2017” begins in Meghalaya

A group of 15 officers from the Myanmarese army has started a six-day bilateral military exercise with their counterparts from the Indian Army in Meghalaya in the first ever joint training of the troops from the two neighbouring countries.

The India-Myanmar Bilateral Military Exercise 2017 (IMBAX-2017) will take place at the recently created Joint Training Node of the Indian Army at Umroi, 30km away from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong.

Third Indo-UK joint military exercise next month

The third Indo-UK joint Army training exercise ‘Ajeya Warrior’ will be conducted in Rajasthan next month. A training exercise between the armies of India and the United Kingdom will be held from 1st to 14th December at the Mahajan Field Firing Range.

The first exercise was conducted in 2013 at Belgaum, Karnataka, where as for the second exercise in 2015, an Indian Army contingent had visited the United Kingdom.
