• Sink Or Swim: Deciding the Fate of the Miss America Swimsuit Competition
Volume 4, Issue No. 1. Sink or Swim: Deciding the Fate of the Miss America Swimsuit Competition Grace Slapak Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: The Miss America beauty pageant has faced widespread criticism for the swimsuit portion of its show. Feminists claim that the event promotes objectification and oversexualization of contestants in direct contrast to the Miss America Organization’s (MAO) message of progressive female empowerment. The MAO’s position as the leading source of women’s scholarships worldwide begs the question: should women have to compete in a bikini to pay for a place in a cellular biology lecture? As dissent for the pageant mounts, the new head of the MAO Board of Directors, Gretchen Carlson, and the first all-female Board of Directors must decide where to steer the faltering organization. The MAO, like many other businesses, must choose whether to modernize in-line with social movements or whole-heartedly maintain their contentious traditions. When considering the MAO’s long and controversial history, along with their recent scandals, the #MeToo Movement, and the complex world of television entertainment, the path ahead is anything but clear. Ultimately, Gretchen Carlson and the Board of Directors may have to decide between their feminist beliefs and their professional business aspirations. Underlying this case, then, is the question of whether a sufficient definition of women’s leadership is simply leadership by women or if the term and its weight necessitate leadership for women. Will the board’s final decision keep this American institution afloat? And, more importantly, what precedent will it set for women executives who face similar quandaries of identity? In Murky Waters The Miss America Pageant has long occupied a special place in the American psyche.

  • True Parents' Message and News
True Parents’ Message and News English Version No. 48 天一國 6年 天曆 6 JULY 2018 ARTICLE ONE Let’s All March Forward Together with Hope By Eiji Tokuno he title of our July 1 rally on was “The 20,000-Person Rally for a Hope- ful March Forward of FFWPU for a Heavenly Japan in 2018.” We had only a month of preparation after we received official permission for it from True Mother. TIt commemorated the beginning of missionary work in Japan on July 15, 1958, when Rev. Choi Bong-choon arrived in Japan from Busan, Korea, dispatched by True Parents. It was the first rally in which we welcomed True Mother officially as Heavenly FFWPU-Japan after the change to a five sub-region structure. In addition, that True Mother effectively announced the start of the last half of 2018 from Japan to the entire world was significant. The rally’s main program had five key features. Needless to say, the most important feature was True Mother’s message. True Mother emphasized the importance of the blessing, which is to connect all 7.5 billion human beings to True Parents and asked all blessed families to succeed in the heavenly tribal messiah mission. The way to national restoration and world restoration will begin on the foundation of our heavenly tribal messiahs’ victories. True Mother requested that Japan invest for the sake of other countries with acknowledgment of the truths of history and as the Mother Nation, as mothers invest everything for their children without any regret or hesitation. True Mother also strongly requested that those in the first generation raise their children and grandchildren properly by bequeathing the first generation’s traditions of attending Heavenly Parent and True Parents, of keeping purity and of practicing for the ideal world within an ideal family.

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. Human trafficking in Mindanao personal narratives and local perspectives A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Anthropology at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand Amie L. Lennox Townsend 2018 Figure 1: Crumbling sculpture in Davao City i Abstract Academic as well as popular attention to human trafficking has increased dramatically in recent years, while the demands for immediate action have meant that counter-measures, from political legislation to direct intervention, have often preceded research-based insights. Researchers have demonstrated the value of close research in understanding this phenomenon. However, such in-depth local research is still an emerging area, and little work has been done on the Philippines specifically. In Mindanao, known issues include various forms of labour trafficking, sex trafficking, underage soldiers, and trafficking of migrants. Human trafficking in Mindanao is a complex problem, both in terms of the multiple forms of trafficking that occur and the Philippines’ unique social setting. The purpose of this research has been to explore how human trafficking in Mindanao relates to wider social processes. I lived in Eastern Mindanao for five months of fieldwork, from December 2015 to May 2016. During this time, I talked with and interviewed people who had experienced exploitative labour, human trafficking, or trafficking-like practices, whose life stories are at the centre of this research.
