Thus, by improving the road surface, it will directly contribute to the improvement of the operation costs. Another pressing issue in rural road network is the insufficient road coverage. Improvement of road network coverage is essential for the development of the area and also to provide opportunity for social and economic activities [5]. Several researches have been conducted in developing nations with the focus on the relationship between road network conditions and economic developments [7; 8; 9]. The general public also widely accepts that improvement of road network will bring about significant social benefits. These benefits in most cases are not measurable in monetary terms, such as improved access to schools and healthcare [7]. Other benefit includes reduced excessive walking and porterage especially among women [10;11]. Sabah is currently under a WNW-ESE compressive stress regime due to the effect of plate movements as the Philippine-Pacific plate move westward at the rate of about 10 cm/ year against the southeast moving Eurasian plate at the rate of about 5 cm/year. The WNW-ESE compression is being accommodated by NE-SW trending active thrust faults and NW-SE trending active strike-slip faults present all over Sabah. Evidence of active faults based on geomorphological features, such as linear structures associated with triangular facets, stream offsets, mud volcanoes and hot springs are widespread in Sabah.The WNW-ESE compression resulted in regional folding or warping of the upper crust to produce an uplifted belt trending NE-SW in Western Sabah, currently occupied by the Crocker-Trusmadi Range. The warping and uplift of the upper crust is thought to be driving extensional tectonics, marked by the presence of NE-SW trending active normal faults along the crest and flanks of the Crocker- Trusmadi Range anticlinorium. At least six elongate Quaternary graben-like basins (Tenom, Keningau, Tambunan, Ranau, Timbua and Marak-Parak) occur along the crest of the anticlinorium.

In this paper, oceanographic data such as seawater temperature, depth, salinity and dissolved oxygen obtained from the Japan Oceanographic Data Center (JODC) for Semporna, Tawau, Kudat, Pulau Layang- Layang and Pulau Kalumpang in Sabah, Malaysia, are reported. The RE available from the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on the coast of Sabah was estimated based on the JODC data obtained.

The contents of this chapter are defined in accordance with EIA guideline specified by the Environment Protection Department (EPD), Sabah. 3.2 General Description The Project site (comprising of Benta I and Benta IIC) is located in the southeast corner of Sabah within the Tawau District, on the eastern coast of Sabah. The geographical position of the proposed development is between longitude 117 o 11’ E and 117 o 40’ E and between latitude of 4 o 23’N to 4 o 52’N (see Figure 2.2.1 ). In terms of straight-line distance, the furthest corners of the Project site stretch approximately 60 km from south to north and also 60 km from east to west. The proposed site partially encompasses the Forest Management Units (FMU) No. 22, 23, 25 and 26 (see Figure 3.2.1 ). Generally, Benta I is located in the Gunung Rara Reserve whereas Benta IIC is in the Kalabakan Forest Reserve, bordered by FMUs 16 and 20 to the north, Sabah Softwoods Bhd plantation to the east and south east, the township of Kalabakan to the south and Innoprise Corporation Sdn Bhd – ICSB’s international collaborative projects such as the SUAS project 3a , the INIKEA rehabilitation project 3b , the RBJ/NEP Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) Project 3c to the west of the Project area (see Figure 3.2.1 ).

To assess the impact of ongoing interventions on P. vivax transmission dynamics in Sabah, we genotyped 9 short tandem repeat markers in a total of 97 isolates (8 recurrences) from across Sabah, with a focus on two districts, Kota Marudu (KM, n = 24) and Kota Kinabalu (KK, n = 21), over a 2 year period. STRUCTURE analysis on the Sabah-wide dataset demonstrated multiple sub-populations. Significant differentiation (FST = 0.243) was observed between KM and KK, located just 130 Km apart.
