The calumniators and traducers of the Negro are to be found, mainly, among two classes. The first and most relentless are those who have done them the greatest injury, by being instrumental in their enslavement and consequent degradation. They de- light to descant upon the "natural inferiority" of the blacks, and claim that we were destined only for a servile condition, entitled neither to liberty nor the legitimate pursuit of happiness. The second class are those who are ignorant of the characteristics of the race, and are the mere echoes of the first. To meet and refute these misrepresentations, and to supply a deficiency, long felt in the community, of a work containing sketches of individuals who, by their own genius, capacity, and intellectual development, have surmounted the many obstacles which slavery t> PEEFACE. -
Labor and Freedom: the Voice and Pen of Eugene V. Debs
UCSB LIBRARY and rreedom Tlxe Voice and Pen of Eugene V./ Debs WKile mere is a lower class I am in it; While mere is a criminal class I am of it; While mere is a soul in prison I am not free. Published by PHIL WAGNER St. Louis 1916 "5 Introduction I think if I had been asked to name this work that comes to us from the rare mind and tender heart of 'Gene Debs, I would have called it "The Old Umbrella Mender/' It was this tragic, touch- ing tale that I first read in the manuscript; and it is the memory of this that will always return to me when I think the book. It is the of} perfect paint ing from the artist's brush the sculptured monu- ment from the master's chisel that makes one lowly, loyal soul to live forever in the hearts of humanity's lovers. Not but that every line in the book is a treasure, and every sentiment brought forth an appeal to all that makes for justice, and equality, and freedom; nor will it detract from, but rather add to, the beauty and inestimable value of the entire collection if others, likewise, carry with them the image and memory of the old umbrella mender, as they travel with Debs the struggling, storm-tossed way of Labor and Freedom. Black Metal Machine Theorizing Industrial Black Metal
BLACK METAL MACHINE THEORIZING INDUSTRIAL BLACK METAL Daniel Lukes Far from being a marginal Black Metal subgenre, Industrial Black Metal is central in bringing out Black Metal’s often disavowed appropriation of machinic noise and its critique of machine society. Through its engagement with “becoming machine” logic and robot apocalYpse, cybernetic, and cosmic science fictions, Industrial Black Metal recon- figures Black Metal’s drive toward the inorganic inhuman as vehement critique of capitalist modernitY and the industrial death state. LIVING WITH VADER Ryder Windham and Peter Vilmur’s official Darth Vader guidebook The Complete Vader (2009) chuckles at some earlY merchandise misfires and mocks a 1978 collectable model kit Darth Vader Van bY manufacturer MPC—which “could be pitted against a similar white ‘hero’ van in the ‘drag race of the galaxY’”—describing it as “curiositY that managed to slip through Lucasfilm approvals.”1 Yet maYbe the makers of that van were onto something. In 2011, Darth Vader is still being used to sell cars. The Volkswagen Passat 2012 commercial “The Force” features a Young child in a Vader costume, who goes about a suburban familY home trYing to use “the force” to no avail. When the father returns home, the child rushes to the drivewaY to use the force on the car, which responds bY flashing its headlights DANIEL LUKES (stealthilY activated bY Dad’s remote keY). The child stumbles back in astonishment, the father raises his eYebrows to Mom, and the picture of the technologicallY-ensconced nuclear familY is complete. In the intervening thirty-three Years, Vader has become a household deity, guarding the heavilY invested and culturallY sanctioned intersections of humanity, technologY, and industrial commerce. -
