Foreword Over the last two decades, the evolution of formal software development methods has been driven by both technical and pragmatic concerns. Today, formal methods are at the point where pragmatic concerns largely determine their evolution. As the software development industry tackles the problems of producing high quality software, there is growing awareness of the role formal methods can play in achieving product quality goals. The 1995 Workshop on Industrial-Strength Formal Specification Techniques (WIFT‘95) has as its primary objective the analysis and synthesis of experiences related to the industrial applications of formal software development methods. The workshop has three major parts: a tutorials session, general technical sessions, and group sessions. The tutorials cover some of the more established formal methods tools and approaches that are currently used in industry, research institutions, and government agencies. Papers in the general technical sessions make up the contents of this book. These papers report on experiences related to, and present novel approaches and/or perspectives on, the industrial applications of formal methods. The group sessions provide focused and structured forums for analyzing and synthesizing experiences related to the industrialization of formal methods. Many aspects of formal methods were covered in the fifty-six papers that were submitted. The thirteen papers selected by the program committee, and included in this book, reflect current practices and address issues that are critical to the industrialization of formal methods. Many people gave of their time and resources to this workshop and we would like to acknowledge their contributions. From the University of Houston-Clear Lake, we thank Ravindra Wijinsinghe, Research Assistant, and Charles Hardwick, Business Professor, for assisting in the preparation and execution of the program committee meeting using a NASA-funded electronic meeting support facility. Also, thanks to UHCL personnel Ruth Ann Morrison and Katina Andrews, for coordinating the distribution of papers for review and the local arrangements for the program committee meeting. Special thanks to Tom Docker, Lesley Semmens, and Pat Allen for distributing papers for review, to Mike Hinchey for distributing Call for Papers at ZUM‘94, and to Jonathan Bowen and Peter Breuer for their very valuable comments on the World Wide Web page. We would also like to express our appreciation for the outstanding job done by the committee and group chairs. We could not have asked for a better group of people to work with! Last, but not least, we would like to express our appreciation to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Florida A.tlantic University for their support. Welcome to WIFT‘95 !
