  • British Sheepdog Trials, 1873–
Rural History (2006) 17, 1, 65–82. C 2006 Cambridge University Press 65 doi:10.1017/S0956793305001603 Printed in the United Kingdom The Rationalisation of Rural Sport: British Sheepdog Trials, 1873–1946 ALBION M. URDANK Department of History, University of California, Los Angeles Abstract The article analyses the evolution in both the forms and changing social content of British Sheepdog trials, from the first recorded event at Bala, Wales in 1873 to the advent of their revival following the Second World War (during which they had been suspended). Contrary to popular myth, early trials were gentry sponsored and therefore heavily freighted with elite values concerning the nature of the shepherds’ craft. Early trials accented speed, agility and obedience in the dog, as well as sheer entertainment value, arising often from debacles that might ensue in any given run. The trials, too, remained adjuncts to elite, Kennel-club style dog-shows, with their focus on conformation and the physical beauty of the animal. As the social prominence of the aristocracy and gentry receded after 1880, so too did their role in defining the nature of the sheepdog trial. With the founding of the International Sheepdog Society in 1906 by shepherds and farmers, the rules for such trials became transformed, reflecting more the actual work of the shepherd, and indirectly the larger shift within agriculture toward more specialised sheep production. These new rules gave the trial a rigorous aspect at once more modern than earlier prototypes, yet rooted in the craft traditions of rural artisans. At the same time, the shepherds and farmers, who made practical use of sheepdogs, assumed direction of the sport.

Short extract from the article printed in the May/June 2014 edition of International Sheepdog News 2010 Wilkinson Sword winner, Harford Logan by Kim Gibson First presented in 1980, the Wilkinson Sword Trophy is one of the Society’s highest honours. It is awarded each year to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the Society, to Sheep Dogs, or to Sheep Dog trialling. It was presented to Harford Logan in 2010, at the third Irish International near Antrim in County Down. Harford is the fourth Irishman to earn such honours. The award was presented to Lionel Pennefather in 1983, Lyn (J. W. L) McKee in 1997, and Tim Flood in 2007. Harford is one of Ireland’s top triallers, he has spent a lifetime working dogs. He represented Ireland at several Hyde Park trials when sheepdog trialling really was in its heyday as a spectator sport, drawing thousands of visitors. Harford was in the first Irish team to compete at the International in 1961. He has been involved in organising many Trials, Nationals and Internationals. He is a long standing director of the ISDS, and was also a Council member, believing strongly in promoting the society and what it stands for - the encouragement of all aspects of the working sheepdog, with high standards of breeding and handling. In the 1990s, Harford judged the Continental with Joe McGrath in East Germany. Harford has regularly been asked to judge sheepdog trials at home and abroad, in America, Canada, and across Europe. The eighth generation of the Logan family to farm at Shanaghan farm in Katesbridge in County Down, Harford was the only son on the arable and stock farm, but found time to develop his own way of communicating with his father’s dogs.

  • Of Dogs and Shepherds: Sheepdog Culture and the American Pastoral
American Studies in Scandinavia, 47:1 (2015), pp. 61-84. Published by the Nordic Association for American Studies (NAAS). Of Dogs and Shepherds: Sheepdog Culture and the American Pastoral Justyna Włodarczyk University of Warsaw Abstract: This text analyzes American sheepdog culture through the lens of Ameri- can pastoralism, taking its cue from the obvious connection between pastoralism and shepherds, but also locating elements of the American pastoral – in particular the tension between nature and civilization and ambivalence towards technology – in the development of sheepdog trials in the US, the figure of the American shepherd, the shepherd’s attitude to the dog and the training methods used in the process of training a sheepdog. Keywords: sheepdog, the United States, pastoralism [T]he shepherd’s dog is the true dog of nature; the dog that has been bestowed upon us for the extent of his utility -- Georges Buffon Even though sheepdogs have been helping shepherds for thousands of years (Miklosi 2009), the increased interest of middle-class, predominantly white, urban and suburban citizens of postindustrial societies in sheepherd- ing as a recreational activity is relatively recent; in the context of the US dating back to more or less the 1980s. This article argues that interest in sheepdog training is simultaneously grounded in the changes in human- animal relationships that take place in late modernity (cf. Franklin 1999) and, paradoxically, challenges the very changes that made it possible. To comprehend the appeal of this activity fully, and to account for the paradox which is at its center, I propose to interpret it as an expression of pastoral 62 American Studies in Scandinavia, 47:1 dissent within dog culture.

He is renowned as the world’s greatest sheepdog and would have to be the most widely used working dog around today. The name itself gives some indication as to the dogs’ origins and so the reasons for its basic structure. The Border Collie was originally developed in and for the conditions existing on the vast tracts of land on the Welsh and Scottish borders with England.

For more information and entry, go to NEBCA.net, Trial Schedule. About Sheep Dog Trials A sheepdog trial is a test of the Border Collie and its training. A trial is designed to test all of the skills that a good farm or ranch dog needs to perform its daily work. To reach the level of training and skill required to successfully compete in a trial takes years of work on the part of both the dog and handler. Not only must the partners understand each other perfectly, but they must also out-guess and out-think unfamiliar sheep – moving them through an obstacle course with points lost for any error. This is the biggest departure from the dog’s daily job of bringing the cows home to be milked or driving a flock of sheep to fresh pasture. At most trials a judge watches each dog’s performance and deducts points for any deviation from the ideal of the perfect run. Other trials are judged on a point system with the dog earning a specific number of points for each sheep put through each obstacle.
