Thomson, to use tigure 1 from "Synchronization of tunction in the foregut of the blowfly Phormia regina (Diptera: Calliphor- idae) during the crop emptying process" (1975). iv ABSTRACT Face flies normally began regurgitating within 1-U minutes after feeding, and continued for periods of up to 240 minutes. Almost 100 percent of flies fed a concen­ trated (4.8%) solution of trypticase-soy broth were observed regurgitating. The deposition of droplets onto a substrate was almost never observed, indicating that the regurgitation is not analagous to vomiting. The droplet exuded contained from five to ten percent of the food consumea, with the crop the source ot the fluid. The crop is also the most likely destination ot the regurgitated material. The purpose of this phenomenon is still not clear. however, the fluid in the regurgitation droplet was almost constantly circulating, possibly increasing the concentration of the liquid through the evaporation of excess water. This theory is supportea by results from tests on the osmolality of the reyurgitated droplets. The osmolality of the regurgitation dro�lets was more than two times greater than that of the ingested food, indicating some change had taken place. The effect of various factors on regurgitation was also determined. The concentration and amount and type of food all significantly affected regurgitation. Solid foods did not result in regurgitation, and large amounts and high concentrations of liquids increased the V frequency and duration of the process. Low relative humidity levels significantly increased the occurrance ot regurgitation, and a temperature of 29 ° C promoted regurgitation. Significant differences were found when interactions between these factors were examined. Since regurgitation droplets were rarely deposited onto a substrate, various factors were examined which would result in this deposition. Increasing the number of flies within a given area increased the number ot drops deposited, however, the actual number of drops deposited per fly did not increase. More important was t�e effect of adding unted tlies to flies already regurgitating. Flies which were regurgitating normally remained motionless, with no·interactions occurring between regurgitating flies. Unfed flies actively searched tor a meal, and during the search often disturbed regurgitating flies. ,This resulted in the deposition of droplets onto the substrate. The presence of a cow also increased this deposition of droplets. This was due to activity of the cow, and may also have been a result of the microclimate produced by the cow. Faham Khamesipour1,2* , Kamran Bagheri Lankarani1, Behnam Honarvar1 and Tebit Emmanuel Kwenti3,4 Abstract Background: The synanthropic house fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae), is a mechanical vector of pathogens (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites), some of which cause serious diseases in humans and domestic animals. In the present study, a systematic review was done on the types and prevalence of human pathogens carried by the house fly. Methods: Major health-related electronic databases including PubMed, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, and Science Direct were searched (Last update 31/11/2017) for relevant literature on pathogens that have been isolated from the house fly. Results: Of the 1718 titles produced by bibliographic search, 99 were included in the review. Among the titles included, 69, 15, 3, 4, 1 and 7 described bacterial, fungi, bacteria+fungi, parasites, parasite+bacteria, and viral pathogens, respectively. Most of the house flies were captured in/around human habitation and animal farms. Pathogens were frequently isolated from body surfaces of the flies. Over 130 pathogens, predominantly bacteria (including some serious and life-threatening species) were identified from the house flies. Numerous publications also reported antimicrobial resistant bacteria and fungi isolated from house flies. Conclusions: This review showed that house flies carry a large number of pathogens which can cause serious infections in humans and animals. More studies are needed to identify new pathogens carried by the house fly.

Collections were made from carcasses in sheltered environment and open vegetation. Carcasses were purchased in pairs at the Omagwa bushmeat market as soon as they were brought in by hunters. They were transported to the Animal House, University of Port Harcourt. Carcasses of each species were placed in cages in sheltered location and open vegetation. Flying insects were collected with hand nets, while crawling insects were trapped in water. Necrophages, predators and transients were collected. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are the effectors of the innate immune system of multicellular organisms and establish the first line of defense to protect hosts from microbial infection. To explore the molecular diversity of the M. domestica AMPs and related evolutionary basis, we conducted a systematic survey of its full AMP components based on a combi- nation of computational approaches. These components include the cysteine-containing peptides (MdDefensins, MdEppins, MdMuslins, MdSVWCs and MdCrustins), the linear α-helical peptides (MdCecropins) and the specific amino acid-rich peptides (MdDomesticins, MdDiptericins, MdEdins and MdAttacins). On this basis, we identified multiple genetic mechanisms that could have shaped the molecular and structural diversity of the M. domestica AMPs, including: (1) Gene duplication; (2) Exon duplication via shuffling; (3) Protein terminal variations; (4) Evolution of disulfide bridges via compensation. Mitchell Department of Entomology university of hawaii, honolulu, hawaii 96822 Musca sorbens Wiedemann (Diptera: Muscidae) is a dung breeding fly which occurs in the Ethiopian, Oriental, and some tropical and subtropical areas of the Palearctic region. The fly has also been recorded from many Pacific islands among which are Guam, Kwajalein, Ebeye, Aitutaki, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Hawaii. The larvae develop in various types of animal feces. Human, dog, pig, horse, cattle, and water buffalo dung are common breeding sources. In Hawaii, larval habitats include dog, cat, bovine, horse, goat, and pig dung (Yu 1971). Dog and cat dung were reported to be excellent sources for lar val development when compared with cattle dung (Mau 1978). The dog dung fly was discovered in Hawaii in 1949 (Joyce 1950). Wilton (1963) reported that there were many complaints about annoying flies where M. sorbens was present. By 1970, complaints about flies were widespread and numerous, and subsequent surveys by Department of Health entomologists indicated that much of the problem was directly attributable to activities of the dog dung fly. In order to develop and implement control procedures, detailed infor mation on the biology and seasonal abundance was needed. This paper presents the results of biological studies. Materials and Methods Rearing, A laboratory culture was established from field collections of adults from several locations on Oahu and maintained using the following procedures. An experimental dosage of 1600 ppm calcium or sodium salt ofB-exotoxin from Bakthanel- 69 in feed did not control Musca domestica in manure. The ,-exotoxin was shown to be highly toxic to chickens, causing gizzard erosion, enteritis, and proventriculus. Poisoning symptoms were reduced feeding, loss of vigour and undersized eggs. After six months of continuous selection from larval exposure, M. domestica acquired resistance to thep-exotoxin.

His parents, though not poor, were not wealthy either. They ran a small shop in Solingen. His paternal grandparents however owned an estate and hamlet with twenty houses. Adding to the rental income, Meigen’s grandfather was a farmer and a guild mastercutler in Solingen. Two years after Meigen was born his grandparents died and his parents moved to the family estate. This was already heavily indebted by the Seven Years' War, then bad crops and rash speculations forced sale and the family moved back to Solingen. Meigen attended the town school but only for a short time. Fortunately he had learned to read and write on his grandfather’s estate and he read widely at home as well as taking an interest in natural history.
