In fact, high profile events such as the Division I National Duals Championship Series are essential for strengthening our most vulnerable collegiate wrestling programs and also for adding new intercollegiate wrestling programs. In fact, since 2001, the NWCA has helped to establish over 160 new intercollegiate follow nwca wrestling programs and in recent years, we’ve been adding between 10 and 20 new teams annually in all collegiate divisions. @ncwawrestling In closing, we hope everyone enjoys a terrific weekend of wrestling. NWCAONLINE Sincerely, Mike Moyer Executive Director, NWCA NWCAONLINE NATIONAL DUALS HISTORY The National Dual Meet Championships were first held in 1989 after being founded by John Graham. Graham, who is the originator of the Virginia Duals, founded the duals after seeing there was a need to crown a National Dual Meet champion in wrestling. He started the national duals as an extension of his own Virginia Duals. In 1992, the NWCA assumed the management of the National Duals and it has since become one of the signature events of the organization. It was at this time, the NWCA board of directors voted to recognize one of the great pioneers of the sport, Cliff Keen by naming the event in his honor. The National Duals became known as the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals. Keen was one of the original founders of the NWCA in 1938 and was the president for the first five years. The National Duals over this time has evolved into a tournament that encompassed all collegiate Divisions (Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, NJCAA, and Women). This event was one of the largest collegiate national sporting events in the country with more than 1,400 wrestlers. In 2015, a series of conference calls were conducted among our top Division I wrestling coaches for the purpose of making further modifications to the Division I National Duals format so that the following “guiding principles” could be achieved: • Create more fan and media excitement around the outcome of regular season “conference” and “non conference” dual meet championships. • Create a signature event that attracts national television exposure and corporate sponsors. • Conduct the event under the NWCA umbrella so an eventual “revenue share” based on profits at each site can be established among all participating teams. • Establish an inclusive format that included access by all teams in the 8 Division I conferences. The result of the collaboration among coaches is a National Dual Championship Series that is designed as follows: • Each of the 8 Big Ten wrestling programs will be paired with one “non Big Ten” opponent. The opponents will be teams who have won the dual meet championship of their conference. • There will only be one dual per team in this championship series. There is no advancement to a next round. • The Top-ranked team following the event will be the NWCA National Dual Meet Champion. Bats-Toi will be the presenting media partner for television and webstreaming. In the second year of this format, teams from the Big Ten Conference will face off with non-Big Ten teams in a showcase weekend of college wrestling dual meets. Last season, eight Big Ten teams hosted events around the country. In 2017, the Big Ten will be visiting college campuses in the ACC, Big 12, EIWA, EWL and Southern Conference. The showcase dual will be on February 19 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, as No. 1 Oklahoma State (14-0) will host No. 2 Penn State (13-0) in a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in Division I. The dual is a rematch of last year’s National Duals championship match won by Penn State 29- 18 in Penn State’s sold-out Rec Hall. Oklahoma State holds a 13-7-1 all-time lead in the series, including an 8-2 mark at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State won the Big 12 regular season, going 6-0 in duals within the recently expanded conference. Penn State went 9-0 in the Big Ten to win the regular-season championship and earn the right to face the highest-ranked non-Big Ten team for the National Dual Series championship.

Three-time NCAA Champion wins wrestling’s Heisman UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 1, 2019 – (Portion of release, including quotes, courtesy Bryan Van Kley, WIN Magazine) Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) has won the WIN Magazine/Culture House Dan Hodge Trophy, presented annually to the top collegiate wrestler in the nation by ASICS. The Hodge Trophy has been awarded since 1995. The three-time NCAA champion finished first in the voting, just ahead of teammate Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.). A Nittany Lion has now won the last three Hodge Trophy awards. Nickal joins former Nittany Lion greats Zain Retherford and David Taylor, who each claimed two Hodge Trophy honors, and former Lion stand-out Kerry McCoy, who won the honor in 1997, as Penn State recipients. In all, Penn State now has four different individuals who have won the honor six times. The Nittany Lion won his third NCAA championship on March 23, defeating Kollin Moore of Ohio State. The 5-1 finals victory at 197 pounds was Nickal’s 30th of an undefeated senior campaign that included 18 pins, three tech falls and six major decisions. In a year that featured four outstanding finalists for the award, known as “wrestling’s Heisman Trophy,” Nickal won the honor over a senior teammate Jason Nolf, also a three-time NCAA champ who had very similar stats as Nickal. The other two Hodge finalists were Rutgers’ senior Anthony Ashnault and Cornell sophomore two-time champ Yianni Diakomihalis, who won NCAA championships at 149 and 141 pounds, respectively.

Penn State is coming off a pair of dual victories two weekends ago. The Nittany Lions won nine of ten bouts in a 42-3 win at Bucknell on Nov. 30, the first-ever trip for Penn State at Lewisburg. The dual was wrestled in front of a Bucknell wrestling-record crowd of 4.279, the third-largest in Stojka Pavilion history. Two days later, the Nittany Lions shut-out No. 10 Lehigh 42-0, winning all ten bouts against the short-handed Mountain Hawks in front of yet another Rec Hall sellout crowd. Penn State got ranked wins from Mark Hall at 174, Bo Nickal at 197 and Anthony Cassar at 285. The Nittany Lions sport a balanced and talented line-up: Sophomore Devin Schnupp is 4-3 at 125, having won his last two dual outings.

The Academic All-District™ teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
