Consultation on the proposed changes to the Designated Area of North Academy from 1 September 2022

Background

North Oxfordshire Academy is an 11-18 school in , North Oxfordshire.

Places at the academy are given in accordance with Oxfordshire County Council’s co- ordinated admissions arrangements. Its admissions policy is in line with that of other local schools giving priority to those children with a Statement of Special Educational Need, Looked-After children, and children with disabilities. Places are then given to children whose permanent address is closest to the academy i.e. those living in the academy’s designated area which is also known as ‘catchment area’, of these places first priority will go to those with siblings at the academy.

The designated area, which has not been reviewed for many years, is currently split into two parts: i. Addresses in Banbury ii. A rural area encompassing the civil parishes of Bourton, Claydon with , , Mollington, and .

This split is due to the fact that historically very few residential addresses existed in the area of north Banbury between the two parts of the designated area. With the construction of a new development in north Banbury this has now changed. There are therefore a number of children living close to the academy who are unsuccessful in their application for a place even though North Oxfordshire Academy is their nearest secondary school. This is because they do not live in the designated area for the academy while others living further away have been offered a place.

The Proposal

North Oxfordshire Academy is proposing to change its designated area in order to better serve those living closest to the academy. It seeks to correct the historical anomaly of a split area and create a single contiguous designated area.

The academy is therefore proposing to change the designated area of the academy to create a more logical boundary in the town and to add new residential addresses in the northern part of the town that have the academy as their closest school.

If approved, the proposed changes to the designated area would come into effect from 1 September 2022. There are no other proposed changes to the school admissions policy.

Within the town of Banbury itself, the following changes are proposed (see Annex and accompanying maps for further details):

• Golden Villa Close to be added to the designated area; • Designated area boundary to continue along the centre of Orchard Way to the junction with Warwick Road; • Designated area boundary to run west along the centre of Warwick Road to the junction with Avenue; • Designated area boundary to continue along the centre of Ruscote Avenue to the roundabout junction with Southam Road/Hennef Way; • Designated area boundary to continue along the centre of the A422 Hennef Way to the M40 Junction 11; • Designated area boundary to continue north along the centre of the M40 to the corner of the of Bourton; • Designated area boundary to run south from the civil parish of Bourton along Hanwell Brook (border of the civil parishes of Hanwell and Banbury) and continue to follow the civil parish boundary line along the southern edge of the civil parish of Hanwell.
