COMMUNICATIONS DISPATCHER I DEFINITION Under immediate supervision, receives and enters emergency telephone and radio communications for a County operated computerized dispatch system; operates an E-9-l-l electronic telephone console; receives and dispatches information by telephone and radio; and performs other related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS communications Dispatcher I is the entry level class in the Com- munications Dispatcher series. Incumbents work under close super- vision while being trained, and gradually begin to work with greater independence as knowledge, skills and experience isacquired.

communications Dispatcher I is distinguished from the next higher class clf Communications Dispatcher II, in that the former works under (~lose supervision and the latter functions as the full working level class where work reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Operates an electronic telephone console, receives emer- gency telephone calls and provides information to the public and various ,agencies served 2. Enters information received via keyboard for recording in a aided dispatch system Operates a computer inquiry to obtain informa- tion on persons and vehicles through related data base systems 4. Accurately types information on a computer terminal keyboard in order to process and/or update information accurately Learns to employ standard operating procedures and prac- tices in receiving and dispatching details and messages Prepares and maintains accurate records and logs of all radio transmissions and telephone calls via computer keyboard entry.

Ability to hear telephone conversations over a telephone or radio receiver. 4. Ability to speak clearly and enunciate words over a telephone during stressful, emergency types of situations.
