  • Guida a Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light

  • Eurovision, a Festival That Is Getting Insipid? by Jesús Manuel Rodrigo Céspedes (@Euronumerics)
SI LOS NÚMEROS CANTARAN… Eurovision, a festival that is getting insipid? By Jesús Manuel Rodrigo Céspedes (@Euronumerics) Three of the last four editions have been won by ballads and those of France and Switzerland for this year have the odds. It seems that in recent years Eurovision has been filled with ballads and emotional songs. A study shows that the festival has lost vitality in recent years. However, by 2021 the trend is reversed and one song stands out above all the others. Discover the musical characteristics of the songs of 2021 on our blog! THE "CONCHITA" EFFECT In our penultimate blog we saw the difficulties in ordering the Festival songs according to our tastes. But, how about measuring the positivity of a song with numbers? And their ability to be a dance hit? There are very difficult variables to measure and it would not surely be easy for us to reach a consensus. However, in order to make a better segmentation, Spotify puts numbers to many of the variables that define a song. In this way, they create song lists for you based on your emotional state or the music you listen to lately. Callum Ballard has collected and studied this data in the analysis Eurovision is getting less cheesy, and we can prove it mathematically. In it, the author makes a comparison between the musical characteristics of the Eurovision songs and those of other songs of the moment. Their results show that the songs in our contest have a different composition for different metrics. Finally it focuses on the evolution of the festival in recent years.

  • Subject: Participation of Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 and Situation at EBU Member BTRC
Members of the European Parliament Ms Delphine Ernotte Cunci President/Chair of the Executive Board European Broadcasting Union by e-mail: [email protected] in cc: Mr Noel Curran Director General European Broadcasting Union by e-mail: curran@ebu; [email protected] Brussels, 18 February 2021 Subject: Participation of Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 and situation at EBU Member BTRC Dear Madam President, right at the very beginning, we, the undersigned Members of the European Parliament, would like to emphasise that we do not address you with the intention of politicising the Eurovision Song Contest. On the contrary, we want to prevent an authoritarian regime from misusing the Eurovision Song Contest for its political goals and thus keep it free from a political agenda. And apart from this music event, it is about respecting and defending basic principles in media policy which, as we assume, the EBU and we share. One of the main goals of the illegitimate Belarusian leader since last summer has been to suppress and brutally crack down on the democratic movement in "his" country. Many journalists, media professionals, artists and musicians have also joined the hundreds of thousands of courageous Belarusians in their peaceful and legitimate struggle for democratic basic principles and their fundamental rights and freedoms. Consequently, they too have been and continue to be victims of intimidation, raids, brutal attacks and arrests, and in no way are they still able to freely pursue their professional and artistic activities. Also persons who were involved in the participation of Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest in the past, are among the victims.

  • A Music and Lyric Analysis of 259 Finalists from the Eurovision Song Contest 2010-2019
Songs for Europe: a music and lyric analysis of 259 finalists from the Eurovision Song Contest 2010-2019 Prof Joe Bennett (Berklee College of Music, USA), Simon Troup (Digital Music Art, UK) Abstract: This corpus study provides an overview of the common musical and lyric characteristics of songs from the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) during the past decade. It uses as its dataset 259 songs, comprising the 25-27 finalists in each year’s Grand Final. Hard data includes high-level musical characteristics such as tempo, key, tonality, dynamic range, and melodic pitch range. Soft data includes lyric themes and musical style. Song styles were categorized according to six ‘archetypes’, adapted from existing categories suggested by previous ESC journalism and academic writing.1 Lyric themes were categorized according to six core themes identified by the researchers through detailed listening and text analysis. The full corpus was analysed, to discuss common musical and lyric characteristics of each archetype, and high and low-scoring subgroups were compared, to investigate whether there are common music or lyric characteristics that correlate with success (measured in numbers of aggregated points per song). Methodology included computer-aided audio analysis (BPM detection, dynamic range), subjective listening (archetype and lyric classification), music analysis (key centre, tonality) and statistical analysis of the dataset. The research, which is an ongoing project 2020-2021, aims to identify the high-level characteristics (of tonality, archetype, lyric theme, dynamic range, tempo etc) exhibited by finalists, and to investigate any characteristics that differentiate winners and other high- scoring songs. 2 1 Jess Carniel, “‘Schlager’, Scandi-Pop and Sparkles: Your Guide to the Musical Styles of Eurovision,” The Conversation, May 9, 2018, http://theconversation.com/schlager-scandi-pop-and-sparkles-your-guide-to-the-musical-styles-of-eurovision-96268.
