(Minutes: Continued from page 2) The question of fuel additives was brought up. John Mangles said that fuel formulation is based upon seasonal and regional conditions. Additives are not recommended because they will change the whole fuel mixture. Each part of the country gets its own fuel mixture at the pump depending on the time of year. So, when you add anything to your gas you change the whole “cocktail.” John went on to say that if your engine has Bob Horzmann asked “Did anyone that been worked on in the past 15 years you didn’t go to the MER go to Cars & Coffee?” probably have hardened valve seats. Chairman’s Message By Andy Ackerman

Well the hot weather is upon us with a venge- ance! April was cold and rainy but May must have been the warmest on record. So much for this nonsense of no climate change! On the drive to RUBCO this month, I thought I caught a break with the threat of rain while driving the GT, but it ended up being a hot and humid day. Arrived with sweat soaked shirt, but Rich Berger hosted a fun jaunt to the restaurant at Eckert’s, finding the only curvy roads in southern Illinois. We had a good crowd gather on the other side and I know the Illinois people were glad we had an event so close to their home. Ray Moot invited everyone back to his digs for an impromptu tour of his garage. I heard it was fantastic and rides were offered in some of his fabulous cars! Although I am not going to NAMGBR Convention in Gettysburg, some of us are traveling to the Champagne British Car Festival in Bloomington, Illinois on June 3rd. This event began in 1991 and has a strong following by members in the surrounding states. It is held on the lovely Clover Lawn of the David Davis Mansion. Allen Decker went last year and had a great time. If you want to attend: Lee Fox, Bob Bridges, Allen Decker, and I are meeting at Pilot Travel Center in Troy Ill. at 5:30 am for a group drive (June 3rd). I hope we generate some re- ciprocal attendance for our show in September. As mentioned at the May club meeting at Das Bevo, I am looking for volunteers to help plan and hold the All British Car Show in September. We have decided on the marque being the Austin Healey. It is the 50 anniversary of the Bug Eye or Frog Eye Sprite and we would like to feature other Healeys as well. If you would like to help, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. We need your help and time is running out. June’s monthly club meeting is the annual picnic and being held at the Sugar Creek Pavilion in Kirkwood Park on June 11th. The club will provide the meat so please bring a side dish or dessert to round out the meal. You can also bring beverages of your choice. I hope that I can talk Stanley into doing the cooking once again since he did such a great job last year. We would like to have dinner at 6pm with a short meeting later on that night. Looking forward to seeing you there! Safety Fast and motor on! Andy

Top Down with the Editor by Glenn Owens My mantra is “drive with the top down,” and that’s generally the way my car rolls. Most of the club members have never seen that A wearing its “bikini” top, but those who were on the Winery Tour this month got to see it first hand. You may guess from the photo, even with the top up, the passengers can still enjoy the feeling of being part of the great outdoors. After looking at the extended weather forecast for Saturday, I hadn’t planned on taking part in the winery cruise, but when the chance for rain was reduced to 20%, I decided to go for it. Map Quest directions indicated that I could make it to the meeting point in 35 minutes. I had a ten minute buffer and off I went. Map Quest did not take into consideration that I was driving a sixty year old car and I did not have a navigator with me. I did manage to meet with the group fifteen minutes late. My apologies and thanks to those who waited for me. Being a “top down” driver does not mean that I am a fan of driving in the rain and I also appreciate a set of windscreen wipers that work effectively. The term “effectively” can have a wide range of acceptance and the effectiveness of the wipers in my car is at the low end of that scale. Enough about the rain, but you can see more photos from the winery trip on page 10. The MG Club challenge continues, but the response is somewhat underwhelming. With over 100 members in the club, one would expect to have more folks drive their LBCs around the area. You’re suggestions for sites to visit are welcomed. Let’s get these lovely cars out so that others can enjoy them too. Soulard Farmer’s Market was the location to visit for the month of May, but that venue was altered to include any farmers’ market. Soulard proudly claims to have been established in 1779. There were no buildings on site at that time. The first buildings were constructed in the 1840s. Let’s make the Gateway Arch / Laclede’s Landing the site for the June challenge. For July, let’s have several pages of LBCs in the Newsletter. Life is good. A 20% chance of rain can also be interpreted as an 80% chance that it will not rain. Everybody would buy a lottery ticket with odds like that.

This was my first visit to Stone Hill Winery and it was delightful. When you go, you must take the tour. It’s free and the history is interesting. Before we took the tour, we all put the tops up. That was a good plan as the storm hit while we were in the wine cellars. We had a great time at the winery. Lots of activities for Maifest.

TVR Griffith to Make Debut This Week

TVR’s all-new will be joined by several of the brand’s legendary heritage models, as part of the Built in Britain display. Visitors to the London Motor Show will be able to see the new TVR Griffith close up, as the new model makes its first major public outing since its launch at the Goodwood Revival in September 2017. Throughout the event, members of TVR’s team will be on hand to talk to interested visitors about the new Griffith in detail.

Les Edgar, Chairman of TVR, said: In the design of the new Griffith, we’ve worked hard to ensure it is as usable in urban traffic as it is thrilling on a country B-road, so we’re delight- ed to show it in detail to visitors of the London Motor Show. TVR is a brand with exceptional heritage as a British manufacturer, and we are committed to producing the new Griffith in Ebbw Vale, Wales, so it is fitting that it should feature in the Built in Britain display. The new Griffith embodies TVR’s long-standing ethos of the Spirit of Driving, using intelligent engineering rather than electronic driver aids. Its naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre - enhanced V8, coupled with lightweight composite iStream architecture, delivers 400bhp/ tonne performance. Ensuring it is well-suited for everyday use, the new TVR Griffith’s interior pack- aging offers outstanding levels of interior comfort and practicality. As well as ample cabin and luggage space, the new Griffith features a bespoke driver- focused instrument cluster and infotainment system. The new TVR Griffith will be presented at the Lon- don Motor Show in Launch Edition specification, starting from £90,000.

With sales increasing by 67% versus the same period in 2017. MG partly attributes its success to its new warranty program. Story from the Tattler, the Newsletter of the Minnesota MG T Register This is what happened to me on Easter morning this year. The April Tattler was already being printed, so I’ve had to hold this gem for the May Tattler. Our local ‘Y’ was open during the a.m. hours of Easter morning, so Lance and I decided to get a little workout in advance of Easter dinner calories. We arrived at the ‘Y’ at about 10:30. The parking lot was getting crowd- ed and families with young children were heading in for some pool time. Lance went upstairs to work out on the machines while I headed to the locker room to get into my bathing suit for some pool exercise. I got ready, took my water bottle with my locker key attached and headed for the pool. I exercised about 1 hour and went into the locker room for a quick shower. I pulled off my bathing suit, showered, dried off and went to open my locker. I looked for my key and realized I had attached it to my water bottle, which was still out next to the pool. OH NO!! Ladies, have any of you tried to pull a wet bathing suit back on once it is off? Don’t even try it! I pulled a muscle trying to get that darned thing over my butt. Then I could only get it pushed back down to my knees! YIKES! That’s not going to work! I used my feet and the power of my chubby little legs to step on the crotch of the suit to ease it off. I had to sit down on a bench to catch my breath and to formulate a new plan. Okay, plan B; my towel is a beach towel so it covers me quite well. I’ll just wrap up in it and get one of the lifeguards to go get my water bottle. As I peek out of the locker room door I cannot see a lifeguard nearby. Both of them are on the opposite side of the pool. Hmmmm…Time for plan C. Wearing my beach towel, no one will ever know I am stark naked nude under it, I’ll just walk out, along the side of the pool, take a right and proceed another 15 feet to where my bottle and, more importantly, where my key is located. I’m doing great! I don’t walk too fast as I don’t want to draw attention to myself. No one is giving me a second look. I start to bend over---OMG, I just realized that bending over may give someone a horrid view of my ‘you know what’! So, I sort of squat down a little and then bend. As I bend, I look up and notice that a guy on a treadmill upstairs is looking at me. I twist a bit, get dizzy, knock the bottle (and the key) into the pool and fall in myself!! Glub, glub, glub! My towel slips down around my feet so I stumble and can’t quite get my balance. Just as I do, I realize my towel is off so I try to get the doggoned thing off the bottom of the pool. Where in the heck is my water bottle and key? I hold my nose and push down to the bottom of the pool. As I resurface with my towel, the lifeguard has thrown in her life float to me, but it hit me on the head. Crap! Now I go under again only with- out holding my nose. I drop my towel and bob up coughing. She jumps in and grabs me in the ‘arm around the neck and chest maneuver’ as I am trying to let her know that I need my towel!! She thinks I’m fighting her, so she is trying to calm me and then finally notices that I am nude!! She lets go and I flail around some more. She helps me get my footing. Another lifeguard jumps in and dives under to get my towel. Well, my covert plan for getting my bottle and key clearly has not worked!! Trying to wrap a wet towel around one’s self isn’t easy either; but, with the help of the lifeguards, we man- aged to get it done. I point at my water bottle and one of the gals grabs it for me. As we are marching thru the kiddie pool to get out (I can’t climb the ladder AND hold my towel in place), I realize there are crowds of adults and children with their noses pressed against the windows surrounding the pool. Some are laughing, some are giving me a ‘thumbs up’ and some are turning away in embarrassment. I see the guy on the treadmill—Wouldn’t you know? It’s Lance! I hope he wets his pants!! Man! What an awful Easter story; but, what a great belated April fools’ joke. Got cha! Mickey Delfino – Past President and a regular contributor to The Tattler [email protected]
