Peter Murphy, 40 Years of Bauhaus FRIDAY FEBRUARY 22 and SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23 | 7:30 PM Peter Murphy and the Ruby Celebration of Bauhaus: featuring Performing in its entirety plus an extended encore of Bauhaus classics. Formed in 1978, the legendary and hugely influential Bauhaus hailed from Northampton in England and was comprised of Peter Murphy, , David J, and . The dark, dramatic music that they made possessed far more force, variety, and playfulness than the “founding fathers of goth” tag that is attached to them. Kara-Lis Coverdale FRIDAY JANUARY 25 | 8 PM | BOND CHAPEL Pianist, organist, and omnivorous explorer of electronic music Kara-Lis Coverdale manipulates sounds from synthetic and traditional instruments to create layered textures and spacious arrangements. Sweet Honey in the Rock + Chicago Children’s Choir SATURDAY MAY 11 | 7:30 PM The legendary female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock is joined by members of the Chicago Children’s Choir for its final concert as ensemble in residence at the University of Chicago. Early Music Ensemble SUNDAY FEBRUARY 3 | 3 PM and FRIDAY MAY 31 | 7:30 PM | BOND CHAPEL In its first concert of the season under its new director Craig Trompeter, the University’s Early Music Ensemble presents works from the time of Queen Elizabeth I, including compositions by William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, and Anthony Holbourne. In May, the Ensemble performs sixteenth century Franco- Flemish music by Josquin des Prez, Jean Mouton, and Adriaan Willaert for voices and instruments. Free.

4 Rachmaninoff Tallis Vespers Lamentations THURSDAY FEBRUARY 21 THURSDAY APRIL 18 7:30 PM 7:30 PM The Chapel Choir sings For Holy Thursday, the Chapel Rachmaninoff’s mystical Vespers in Choir performs the Lamentations a concert featuring this single work. of English Renaissance composer Free. STUDENTS IN SONG CMAC: The University of Chicago Glee Club FRIDAY MARCH 15 | 7 PM The University of Chicago Glee Club presents its winter concert in the beautiful space of Rockefeller Chapel, this year featuring a new setting of Adon Olam by CMAC member Ben Donvan, and Maurice Duruflé’s Messe Cum Jubilo, with baritone Will Myers and organist Bryan McGuiggin. Tickets at the door, $10 general, $5 students, $20 family. The University Women’s Ensemble FRIDAY MAY 24 | 8 PM The University of Chicago Women’s Ensemble sings music from different eras and world traditions, including Western classical works, polyphonic singing traditions from across the globe, and diverse singing styles from the United States. Directed by Mollie Stone. Free.

Original photograph by Matt Frankel. 5 BELLS The Carillon WEEKDAYS AND SUNDAYS 12 NOON AND 5 PM The magnificent bells are played by University carillonneur Joey Brink and his carillon studio of twenty students, each of whom studies for three years to achieve professional certification. The students lead tower tours Tuesday through Friday at 11:30 am and 4:30 pm, and on Sundays at 12:15 pm (Sunday evenings are recitals only without public tours) during the ten weeks of each academic quarter. See the Rockefeller Chapel website for updates and additional information. The tower tour involves climbing 271 steps. No, there is no elevator. But the view from the top, not to mention the experience of visiting the bells so close that you can touch them, is worth the effort. Meet at the Chapel’s front desk for a prompt departure up the winding stone stairs. A donation of $5 is invited, free to students.

A Meeting of Two Seas: Migration Stories PERFORMANCE TRADITIONS OF SOUTH ASIA, THE MIDDLE EAST, AND ANDALUSIA SATURDAY APRIL 27 | 7:30 PM Following the groundbreaking performances of music of South Asia offered these past two years at Rockefeller Chapel by a coalition of Hindu and Muslim students working to create a “meeting of two seas,” this year’s concert marking the end of the annual Spirit Week takes a new direction: celebrating the performance traditions that emerged from the movement and migration of diverse spiritual communities across South Asia, the Middle East, and Andalusia. An American Shabbat FRIDAY MARCH 8 | 8 PM Cantor David Berger, Cantor Roslyn Barak, the Hyde Park Jewish Choral Society, and some of the leading cantors from around the country join together with pianist Joyce Rosenzweig and University organist Thomas Weisflog in a musical Shabbat service, honoring the fact that since the first Jewish immigrants arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654, America has provided a unique home for Jewish cultural and spiritual innovation. The opening event of an international conference, Hallel V’zimra: Jewish Liturgical Music, Present and Future, this service celebrates the music of American Jewish composers, from nineteenth century classics to today’s newest pieces.
