I've been blogging Vinkara Wines of Turkey about wine and food here in Memphis, TN since 2005. I haven't had a Turkish wine All text and images ©2005- since 2008, and 2014 Ben Carter. I wasn't avoiding wines from the region, BEN CARTER it's just that they never made it to my doorstep. Luckily, that turned around with a quartet of wines from Vinkara (the website seems to be down at the moment). The modern Turkish wine industry is relatively young, though the country itself is the fourth largest producer of grapes in the world (most of those going to non-alcohol uses). Some estimate that there are over a thousand indigenous vinifera grape varieties in the country, and on this occasion I had the chance to try two grapes for CONTACT the first time. THIS REPORT CONTAINS ASSESSMENTS OF COMMODITY AND TRADE ISSUES MADE BY USDA STAFF AND NOT NECESSARILY STATEMENTS OF OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY Voluntary - Public Date: 4/29/2013 GAIN Report Number: Turkey Post: Istanbul Alcoholic Beverages Sector Report Report Categories: Product Brief Approved By: Jess Paulson, Agriculture Attaché Prepared By: Meliha Atalaysun, Ag. Marketing Assistant Report Highlights: Sales of alcoholic drinks have more than doubled since 2000, with 614 million liters to 1.127 billion liters in 2012. Growth has slowed over the last five years to an annual increase of about 10%. During this five-year period whiskey registered the highest increase with 170%, followed by vodka with 71%, wine with 49% and beer with 8%. This growth is supported by rising disposable income among a growing middle class. The majority of this consumption is in tourist resorts and in large cities where the concentration of young people is high and the influence of western culture is stronger. Strong conservative views on alcohol generally limit sales in many rural areas. General Information: Sector Situation The relatively you average age in Turkey is expected to support continued growth in this sector as the younger Turks account for the major part of alcohol consumption. This growth is despite increased prices as a result of frequent increases in Turkey’s Special Consumption Tax (OTV). While rakı, a traditional aniseed-flavored spirit remains popular in many rural areas and among the middle aged and older consumers, beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage among younger people due to the fact that it is cheaper and suitable for consumption at anytime, anywhere.

  • EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN WINES: GREECE, TURKEY and LEBANON Greek Wine Turkish Wine
EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN WINES: GREECE, TURKEY AND LEBANON Greek wine Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. Greek wine had especially high prestige in Italy under the Roman Empire. In the medieval period, wines exported from Crete, Monemvasia and other Greek ports fetched high prices in northern Europe. A system of appellations was implemented to assure consumers the origins of their wine purchases. The appellation system categorizes wines as: • Onomasia Proelefsis Anoteras Poiotitos (O.P.A.P. ), i.e. an Appellation of Origin of Superior Quality • Onomasia Proelefsis Eleghomeni (O.P.E. ), i.e. a Controlled Appellation of Origin • Topikos Oinos , i.e. a Vin de pays • Epitrapezios Oinos , i.e. a Vin de table • Epitrapezios Oinos , regular table wine which usually comes in screw-top containers • Cava , more prestigious, aged "reserve" blends (minimum aging: 2 years for whites; 3 years for reds) • Retsina , a traditional wine, flavored with pine resin • The Wine regions Main wine growing regions of contemporary Greece are: Aegean Islands, Crete, Central Greece, Epirus, Ionian Islands ,Macedonia and, Peloponnese Varietals Xinomavro, a variety native to Greece and often compared to Nebbiolo due to its ability to develop complex earthy aromas with age, has the potential to unlock Greece’s full potential, according to its winemakers. A healthy bunch of Xinomavro . The heartland of this high tannin, high acid grape, whose name translates to “acid black”, lies in north west Greece, which is home to two PDO regions for Xinomavro, Amyndeon to the north and Naoussa further south. Greek winemakers in both regions have reaped success outside of Greece by blending Xinomavro with international varieties such as Syrah or Merlot to make them more marketable, however a belief that the industry’s future lies in further promoting the region’s indigenous grapes, so that they may stand alone, prevails.
