Blue Cruise Turkey
BLUE CRUISE along the Aegean coast of Turkey The Blue Cruise is ordinarily advertised as renting a private yacht (with captain and sta# on board), cruising along the southwestern coast of Turkey, making stops to swim, hike and see historical ruins. This sounds exciting but it misses the atmosphere of the Blue Cruise that is almost spiritual. As you board your yacht, you also cut the mental ties with land. You embark on a di#erent existence, as if nothing else matters outside your yacht, or even exists for that matter. What makes the Blue Cruise unique is the lack of requirements and responsibilities - at last the freedom to do absolutely nothing and with it, a complete freedom of mind. You can gaze at the sea for hours on end, you can swim everyday, sleep all day or you can finish that book that you weren’t able to finish for ages because of the lack of time. However if you want “action” to spend your time, you will never be at a loss to find yourself activities to try either. When the yacht is anchored, you can discover nearby coves by canoes; you can cover greater distance than swimming and its good exercise for your biceps! Or you can hail down one of the speed boats that tour the coves and bargain for water skiing, jetskis or banana rides. And it goes without saying that you can hike and climb to your heart’s content the pine and olive covered hills that rise from the shore to discover historical ruins from Lycians, Anatolian Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. -
A View of the History of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine
A VIEW OF THE HISTORY OF THE ISTANBUL FACULTY OF MEDICINE Prof. Dr. Nuran Yıldırım The Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics Attributing the roots of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine to the Fatih Darüşşifa after a great deal of discussion, the 500th anniversary of medical education in Istanbul was celebrated in 1970. The soundest documents showing that medical education was carried out in the Fatih Dârüşşifa were the appointment papers (rüus) of medical students for the dârüşşifa in the 60 years between 1723 and 1783. These nine rüus, which were recently published, clarify that there were positions for six medical students in the dârüşşifa, and that whenever a vacancy came up, a new medical student would be appointed by the chief physician to undergo a systematic medical training. 1-Archival document concerning Ismail Efendi‟s appointment in place of Derviş Mehmet in Fatih Darüşşifa after his death. With the opening of the Süleymaniye Medical Medrese, medical education in Istanbul, which had started with the Fatih Dârüşşifa, became institutionalized. The opening of a medical medrese for the first time in the Ottoman State is accepted as being an important step in our history of medical education. The Süleymaniye Medical Medrese (Süleymaniye Tıp Medresesi) was a medrese for specializing, or a “post-graduate” course, as only students who had completed their classic medrese education could continue. Not only did the physicians that were trained join the scholarly classes, but at the same time they could be qadi or rising even to the level of sheikh-ul-Islam or grand vizier. -

Structural Health Monitoring Systems in Istanbul
STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING SYSTEMS IN ISTANBUL Eser ÇAKTI1 and Erdal ŞAFAK2 ABSTRACT A number of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) networks exist in Istanbul. They have been designed and implemented over a timespan extending more than twenty years by the Department of Earthquake Engineering of Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute of Bogazici University (DEE-KOERI). They are installed in several high-rise buildings, historical structures, lifeline structures across the Bosporus, and industrial facilities. The monitoring systems installed in historical structures in Istanbul are unique, as they form the largest group of monumental structures in the world monitored in the same city. The structural monitoring networks record the dynamic motions of the structures continuously, and the data are transmitted in real time to the monitoring center at the DEE-KOERI. The majority of the systems use accelerometers for monitoring. Some structures are also instrumented with tilt meters and GPS sensors. An in-house real-time modal analysis software is used to process and analyze the data. The software includes data processing, spectral identification and animation modules. The results are displayed in real time, showing the time variations of modal properties and the structure’s configuration. In addition to standard modal identification techniques, more advanced real-time techniques are explored by using the data from the structures. Installation of more monitoring systems in other structures are in progress. INTRODUCTION Numerous seismic hazard studies done following the destructive M=7.4 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake of 17 August 1999 all conclude that Istanbul is likely to have a damaging earthquake in the near future (Parsons et al.
