Name ________________________ Gnomon Sundials – Student Worksheet GNOMON (shadow maker) Time read at point of shadow Arab philosophers of 9th and 10th centuries were amongst the first advanced scientists and mathematicians in Europe. They discovered that using a gnomon, a triangular shadow maker, would indicate hours of exactly the same length of standard time, no matter what time of year it was. Sundials were often ornate and had mottos such as: • Tempus fugit (Time flies – Latin) • Let others tell of storms and showers. I only tell of sunny hours (Anon) To prepare your gnomon Fold a sheet of paper in half. The fold will be the top of the gnomon and will be used to reinforce it. Draw another line about 1cm below this to make the flaps that will stick onto the base in the worksheet. Leaving the paper folded cut round the outside of the gnomon. This is to enforce a homogenous set of rules throughout the organization, insuring that wherever a member goes, they may play with a minimum of problems. Storytellers are allowed and encouraged to use their judgment in the World of Darkness to develop stories and enrich the flavor of the game. i Make Contact: Contributive Bookselling and the Small Press in Canada Following the Second World War Cameron Alistair Owen Anstee A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate in Philosophy degree in English Literature Department of English Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Cameron Alistair Owen Anstee, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 ii Abstract This dissertation examines booksellers in multiple roles as cultural agents in the small press field. It proposes various ways of understanding the work of booksellers as actively shaping the production, distribution, reception, and preservation of small press works, arguing that bookselling is a small press act unaccounted for in existing scholarship. It is structured around the idea of “contributive” bookselling from Nicky Drumbolis, wherein the bookseller “adds dimension to the cultural exchange […] participates as user, maker, transistor” (“this fiveyear list”). The questions at the heart of this dissertation are: How does the small press, in its material strategies of production and distribution, reshape the terms of reception for readers? How does the bookseller contribute to these processes? What does independent bookselling look like when it is committed to the cultural and aesthetic goals of the small press? And what is absent from literary and cultural records when the bookseller is not accounted for? This dissertation covers a period from 1952 to the present day. I begin by positing Raymond Souster’s “Contact” labour as an influential model for small press publishing in which the writer must adopt multiple roles in the communications circuit in order to construct and educate a community of readers. -

Livesay's early work is motivated on the subjectivity of an emerging female-centred poetics inspired by feminist readings of Modernism. The feminist’s perspective on literature, creative or critical, whether in a third world country or elsewhere, has had to confront issues of similar persuasion: male- chauvinism, sexist bias, psychological and even physical exploitation, hegemonistic inclinations, and an utter disregard for the female’s psychological, cultural, familial and spiritual quests. TEMPUS FUGIT Melissa Pheterson In 1941 my grandfather’s mother opened a letter informing her son of his duty to serve in World War II. She crumpled on the floor and died of grief. Last Sunday, my mother, who lives in the town next to mine, returned from a grueling weekend of caring for my daughter—cooking dinner, coax- ing her to eat, bathing her, sustaining her kicks of protest over the slathering of lotion—only to collapse into bed at twilight with her iPad and find on Facebook a picture of Paige taken with her other grandmother, both forcibly yet prettily posed at a restaurant. “Facebook is a crock of…soup!” she texted me before weeping into the night, or so I deduced from her splotchy face at the airport the next morning. We were on the way to visit my grandparents. 87 88 VALPARAISO FICTION REVIEW “If your in-laws were nicer,” she muttered, re-counting the sandwiches she’d made for Paige to consume in-flight, “I would cook for them. So you wouldn’t have to set foot in a chain restaurant.” My grandparents never bothered to change the previous owners’ Tacky Eighties aesthetic, whose centerpiece was a Formica bar with etched glass waiter carrying a tray of glowing absinthe martinis. My grandfather Jacob used to call him “Harry,” summoning him with a whistle. Now Harry lords it over him; you can just see his tuxedoed silhouette from the den, where my grandpa dozes in his recliner or reads the same paragraph over and over; my grandmother recently bought him a large-print version of Fifty Shades of Grey, trusting her talk shows. -

Comedy -and- Leverage (2008-2012 television series) A drama about a team of high-tech Robin Hoods who scam greedy corporations and corrupt forces that have victimized average citizens. A sly former insurance sleuth captains the crack crew, which includes an eccentric expert thief; a comput- er virtuoso; a hardfisted "retrieval specialist"; and a grifter with ace thespian skills.
