of psychopathy has gradually evolved over time, with interest peaking in recent decades. Concurrently, the lay public’s relationship with psychology has changed from guarded skepticism to acceptance and even demand. The tie that binds psychology and the public has always been mass communication, both in news and popular media format. Reflecting changing trends, mass media has altered the way it objectively describes and popularly portrays psychopathy. Whereas psychopaths were consistently portrayed as villains in the mid-20th Century, today

    Incurable Psychopaths? Marianne Kristiansson, MD Treatment, comprising pharmacotherapy and an educational program based on cognitive behavior therapy, of four psychopathic, criminal men fulfilling the crite- ria for borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder is de- scribed. The diagnoses were made during a forensic psychiatric evaluation. An estimation of the capacity of the central serotonergic system was performed by analysing the platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity. The pharmacotherapy was combined with an educational program involving strategies for developing better impulse control. All four men had earlier been regarded as resistant to conventional therapy. In the present cases, a combined psychosocial and biolog- ical approach seemed to be effective in developing an increased control of im- pulses, leading to improved coping strategies. Controlled studies are needed in order to clarify whether the described treatment program proves beneficial. This thesis addresses the application of this emotion, as well as self and social evaluative processes, to our understanding of offenders, specifically those high in psychopathic traits. Part 1 reviews the literature concerning emotionality within psychopathy, in order to assess the capabilities, as well as the deficits that people with psychopathic traits demonstrate. Emotions classified as ‘moral’ or ‘self-conscious’, namely empathy, sympathy, guilt, remorse, shame, embarrassment and pride, are investigated. From the review it is clear that psychopaths are not the truly unemotional individuals that they are commonly portrayed as being, but instead experience many emotions to varying degrees. This paper concludes by highlighting possible areas for further exploration and research.

    Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a scene­for­scene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a re­imagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of non­English language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its ever­growing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man.

Based on self-reports from 233 adults, psychopathic personality traits were robustly related to enjoying laughing at others, which most strongly related to a manipulative/impulsive lifestyle and callousness. Higher psychopathic traits correlated with bad mood and it existed independently from the ability of laughing at oneself. While overall psychopathic personality traits existed independently from the sense of humor, the facet of superficial charm yielded a robust positive relation. Higher joy in being laughed at also correlated with higher expressions in superficial charm and grandiosity while fearing to be laughed at went along with higher expressions in a manipulative life-style. Thus, the psychopathic personality trait could be well described in its relation to humor and laughter. Implications of the findings are highlighted and discussed with respect to the current literature.     Diagnosing Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation AMY LONG N FEBRUARY 5, 2006 NEARLY THIRTY-EIGHT MILLION VIEWERS CHOSE TO forego post-Super Bowl celebrations in favor of tuning in to a Omuch-hyped episode of ABC’s hit medical melodrama Grey’s Anatomy. The episode thus constitutes ‘‘the best scripted-series perfor- mance since the series finale of Friends’’ in 2004 and ‘‘the best per- formance of an ABC show since an episode of Home Improvement in 1994’’ (‘‘Grey’s Scores Big’’). Grey’s Anatomy and its multiracial ensem- ble stand in marked contrast to the all-white casts of both aforemen- tioned shows, a fact that has not been lost on media observers. When civil rights groups issued their annual ‘‘diversity report cards’’ for 2006, ABC garnered the highest overall grade of the four major net- works (an A-), thanks in part to shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and Ugly Betty (‘‘Grey’s Leads Charge’’). Its diverse cast and the production practices through which it was assembled have been the major focus of the media attention conferred upon Grey’s, second only to stories con- cerning the colossal audiences it routinely snags.1 The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes (currently the only African American woman ‘‘showrunner’’ in network television), gives the credit for her show’s diversity to her ‘‘race-blind’’ casting methods.     THE RIGHTS AND WRONGS OF THE PSYCHOPATH IN CRIMINAL LAW: HOW MODERN SCIENCE MUST RESHAPE OLD POLICY. © Jasmine Nicolson* INTRODUCTION Psychopaths have long been enshrined in both popular culture and in law as the face of evil and danger;1 their classic characteristics of callousness, impulsivity, and remorselessness have helped to cement the conceptual link between psychopathy and violent crime.2 Psychiatrists from the 19th century, with all the equipment they had available at the time, made sweeping generalisations about the nature of the disorder. Pinel described patients who appeared without delusions or psychosis, as mentally unimpaired but engaged in impulsive acts of ‘instincte fureur’.3 Prichard built upon this definition to develop the concept of ‘moral insanity’.     Bullies to Buddies p. 1 A Pilot Study of the Bullies to Buddies Training Program Running Head: Bullies to Buddies Bullies to Buddies p. 2 A Pilot Study of the Bullies to Buddies Training Program In a national study of bullying, Nansel, Overpeck, Pilla, Ruan, Simons-Morton, & Scheidt (2001) found that 29.9% of sixth through tenth grade students in the United States report moderate to frequent involvement in bullying: 13% as bullies, 10.6% as victims, and 6.3% as both bullies and victims. Even if they are not chronically involved with bullying, research indicates that the majority of students will experience some form of victimization at least once during their school careers (Felix & McMahon, 2007). Research has shown that students involved in bullying are at increased risk for negative outcomes throughout childhood and adulthood. Children who are the targets of bullying are more likely to experience loneliness and school avoidance than non-bullied students (Kochenderfer & Ladd, 1996; Nansel et al., 2001), have poor academic outcomes, and are at increased risk for mental health problems such as anxiety and suicidal ideation, which can persist into adulthood (Kaltiala-Heino, Rimpela, Rantanen, & Rimpela, 2000; Kochenderfer & Ladd, 1996; Kumpulainen et al., 1998; Olweus, 1995; Rigby, 2000; Schwartz, Gorman, Nakamoto, & Tobin, 2005). Bullies also experience more negative outcomes than their peers; they are more likely to exhibit externalizing behaviors, conduct problems, and delinquency (Haynie et al., 2001; Nansel et al., 2001), are more likely to sexually harass peers, be physically aggressive with their dating partners, and be convicted of crimes in adulthood (Olweus, 1993; Pepler et al., 2006).
