I was anxious, and my face grew pale as loud blood curdling screams echoed through the trees. ‘Twas the night before Halloween and I somehow ended up standing in the line of the scariest haunted house in my city. The fear of faces jumping out at me and the terrifying laughs that seemed to play at my emotions gobbled up my insides. The other thing that made my skin crawl was that the haunted house was in the middle of nowhere. It was as if we were in an actual horror movie. Fog surrounded the house as if it were some blanket that kept the house warm. Although, there were no warm feelings coming from that house. I could tell it was staring at me, eyes as glowing green windows and a mouth of two unwelcoming wooden doors. The paint job of the house was a horrific brown color and the smell was musty as if I were in some swamp. -

Page 135 TELEVISION REVIEWS “We See Dead People”: Living TV’s M ost Haunted (2002 present) & Ghost Whisperer (2005 present) Although Living TV, a British satellite/cable channel, claims to provide what it calls “women oriented entertainment,” it more closely resembles a series of advertising slots for the services of numerous heroic investigatortypes. A regular viewer rapidly learns that should she find herself plagued by violent crime, she should seek out a brooding, sombrely dressed man, preferably one who shuns sunlight in case it singes his undead skin, who spends his days in a windowless laboratory, or who only removes his shades when dramatic emphasis requires it. Perhaps less puzzling is the parallel implication that, should one’s difficulties stem from the disgruntled dead, a young, goodlooking married woman with big eyes and acute hearing is best qualified for the job. Specifically, “reality”TV behemoth Most Haunted and Ghost Whisperer, a supernatural drama series in the TouchedByanAngel vein, both posit women as particularly susceptible to and suitable for what Edith Wharton referred to as “ghost feeling,” relying upon timehonoured associations between femininity, the uncanny and the rituals surrounding death. Via these domesticated Sibyls who guide us through the televisual underworld, uncovering longburied truths and taming unruly spirits, Living offers its viewers vicarious fantasies of impossible agency that do little to unsettle either the audience or traditional gender stereotypes. There is more to the choice of a female protagonist than audience identification, however. Any show that claims to produce genuine, regular paranormal phenomena leaves itself vulnerable to debunking efforts, and Most Haunted is no exception. -

The Haunting House of Haunted Horrors Em Pehlivan and Ekin Fawcett CAST AND SCENE LIST CAST GHOST GRABBERS A group of open-minded (naive) freethinkers (idiots), they professionally record their encounters with the paranormal (own a camera) as they professionally delve deep into the mysteries of the supernatural (look at Wikipedia page before coming). They have countless (two, at best) experiences that they often share (annoy) others with. They are determined (very over-excited) to find real proof (any proof) of a world beyond that which science understands. They are bold (stupid), eager (stupid), and determined to not let anything stop them in their quest for answers! (very stupid) CHRIS: The (co) leader of the ghost grabbers. An egotistical idiot, he is certain he is one cool video away from an Oscar ALF: The (co) leader of the ghost grabber. Talks big, but is a massive coward DANNY: Just excited to be involved!!! :D KIM: The obligatory team sceptic. Joined solely for the sheer smug pleasure of destroying other people’s happiness through pedantry and patronisation CELESTE: A psychic who couldn’t predict that joining the ghost grabbers was a terrible career move JO: Camera person and Chris’ sibling. Only joined because their mum made them go to make sure Chris felt supported TEENS A group of teenagers who snuck into the allegedly haunted house on a dare, and because none of them could think of anything better to do. VIC: Has no idea what is going on and is loving every second of it ALEX: Is more rational than their date, Vic, with the exception of their rationale behind choosing to date Vic SAM: Has seen every horror film and very quickly comes to regret this over the course of the play JEAN: Probably should pay more attention to things, they have a habit of wandering off and being easily… well, spoilers GHOSTS They are more pathetic than scary, to be honest, and they have been trapped in the house for varying lengths of time. -

Supervising Professors: Alisa Perren, Charles Carson In 1975, Parliament Funkadelic nicknamed Washington, D.C. “The Chocolate City,” acknowledging the city’s status as a center of black culture and community. As the city emerged as a booming metropolis with a thriving black population, black- owned radio was there to inform and entertain. Since the 1970s, black radio has enjoyed a privileged place among black audiences in Washington. Originally a venue for black artists to gain exposure, black radio evolved into a critical venue for black news, politics, community engagement, and entrepreneurship. Today, black radio stations in Washington, D.C. seek to balance the rapidly evolving radio landscape with claims to authenticity and efforts to draw connection with their listeners. This thesis explores three different radio ownership structures—community, college, and corporate—and their effects on programming decisions at three black radio stations in Washington, D.C. These three Washington stations – WKYS, WHUR, and WPFW – each represent different ownership models. Through interviews with programming directors at each station, analysis of show playlists, and examination of key moments in the history of each station, this thesis examines the creative, cultural, and economic considerations that go into programming decisions.
